With a title page wood cut ('Dumb Driven Cattle', reproduced on the upper board) and a further ten wood cut illustrations and devices. Tips of corners rubbed, boards lightly chafed, and the backstrip lightly tanned. Very good. 1,500 copies were printed. Evan Gill 259.

Pp. x, 69. 8vo., original cloth backed boards with the originalblue dust jacket printed in gold stuck down on the pastedowns boards. Jacket rather faded and chipped at the spine, otherwise a good, uncut copy. Notes at the beginning suggest that "Stock-taking' might have been a more appropriate title as the material was collected from racks and gallies in the printing office during the stock-taking. A very attractive book.

Seen as the precursor to the S. Dominic's Press with its early Gill engraving and close collaboration between Gill and Pepler. At the time this book was published, Pepler worked for the London County Council and was the organiser of the first school meals service in London. The Devil's Devices, a sociological satire, reflect his social concerns at the time and reflects on wealth and capitalism with some very interesting use of page design and printing. Printed at the Westminster Press, 441a Harrow Road, just down from our current shop.

A very good copy The title is from one of the poems which is for Petra Gill on her seventeenth birthday and which has a chorus line In petra exaltavit te : He exalted me upon a rock.

With five engravings and press device. Issued without covers and stitched as issued. The pamphlet is in Very Good++ or better condition and is unopened at the top edge. Some very light markings to the covers and a few light spots the the rear cover. The true first issue with the correct titling 'with engravings by A.E.R.G.' to the front cover. The subsequent variant printed later the same year was issued with the titling changed to 'with emblems by A.E.R.G.' (Taylor and Sewell A5). Scarce with such attributes. Seen as the precursor to the S. Dominic's Press with its early Gill engraving and close collaboration between Gill and Pepler. This copy is inscribed by Pepler for R.N. Green Armytage, a friend of the Guild members at Ditchling: "We gave up this game as too proud. Douglas Pepler". Pepler has also written a personal note to Green Armytage which is tipped in, dated from Ditchling, 26. VI. 19 and with the Guild mark in ink. He writes about The Game magazine and some beautiful verses received from Fr John which just missed going into the first edition of The Game. Also tipped in is a page monogrammed and dated 1955 by an owner of the book Stanley Scott who explains that The Game in the letter is the magazine produced at St Dominic's Press and 'the game' in the inscription is that of signing copies of the book. Reissue, inscribed by the author; 8vo; 12 woodcuts, 11 by Eric Gill, some full-page, scattered light foxing, slight toning to leaves; publisher's red cloth, black lettering to spine, spine faded, corners slightly rubbed, light toning to endpapers, otherwise a very good copy. Inscribed by the author after half-title, 'M.D.S. [?] H.D.C.P. auct / post hoc Whitsuntide 1944'. The Devil's Devices was the second book to feature Eric Gill's illustrations. Gill 259.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Wraps. 12 mo, 117 mms by 186.[26] pp. Original publisher's thin black card gilt lettered on cover with a gilt illustration ( Mary). From the bibliography, "[a] compilation of texts and nineteen wood-engravings by the Gill and Pepler children viz. Elizabeth, Petra and Joanna Gill, David, Stephen and Mark Pepler. The illustrations include two drawings by Elizabeth Gill engraved on wood by Eric Gill, P48 and P158." Christmas-themed text and illustrations, but also with "The Story of a Boy and Girl", "The Dwarf and The Giant", "The Wicked Pirates" (each of these only about a page long) and, towards the end of the book "Bedroom Rules" which opens with "Rise 7.30 and Dress, Wash, Brush Hair and clean Teeth; say Prayers, turn back Bed." The final page, "Note", tells us that "The Printer is in hot water for having failed to submit proofs to the authors." This is the rare first state of the book with the date 1919 (MCMXIX) on cover and title page. With the plain bookplate of Eric Gill's younger brother and bibliographer Evan Gill reading 'E Collectione Evan Gill Liverpool.' Very slight foxing at fore-edges o/w clean bright very good indeed or better.

Number 7 of 220 copies with a handwritten limitation on the free front end-paper initialled by Douglas Pepler. Faint erased owner's name also on this end-paper. Printed in red and black throughout. 15 wood engravings by Eric Gill and one other. Text block cracked and first enclosure loose. Tape marks on front boards and college library label on front pastedown. The actual number of copies is likely to be less than the 220 stated in the limitation as Pepler may have destroyed some copies as he was not happy with book. Scarce.
