A very nice copy of Longfellow's Poems in a super full calf elaborately tooled and gilded binding and with 53 really lovely illustrations by John Gilbert, some full page. Pages are 21, 436, and there is also an engraved portrait frontispiece after Lawrence. The binding sports thick boards with nicely gauffered edges, yellow endpapers, edges all gilt and red title piece. The text is ruled red and sometimes in double columns. Binding sound with very minor wear externally, slight rubbing to corners, text block sound and pages very clean, no marks or inscriptions, but slight foxing from the tissue guard to the frontispiece. Longfellow was the most popular poet of his day on both sides of the Atlantic, and Gilbert one of the greatest of Victorian illustrators. This fine quality book is testament to their high repute. All 20 plates present. Condition is VERY GOOD ; mild edge wear, clean, spine leather is sunned to brown and there is a small split along the front joint but the binding is quite solid. Most likely a later 19th or early 20th c. rebinding, as the margins have been trimmed, with loss to some of the titles of the plates.
