In den Warenkorbhardcover. Zustand: Fair. The Comic Almanack: An Ephemeris in Jest and Earnest, Second Series 1844â"1853, William Makepeace Thackeray, Albert Smith, Gilbert A. Beckett, and The Brothers Mayhew â" N/A Publication: London, Chatto and Windus, c. 1874 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 428. Condition Report: Fair. The original publisher's green c…loth binding exhibits significant wear, most notably with splitting and fraying along the entire length of the front joint and partial cracking to the rear joint. The spine is heavily sunned, resulting in a distinct darkening of the cloth, with prominent rubbing, chipping, and cloth loss at both the head and tail. The gilt tooling and lettering on the front board remain relatively bright, though the board edges and corners show characteristic bumping and abrasion. Internally, the heavy text block is securely attached but slightly shaken, and the preliminary pages, including the title page and frontispiece, display moderate to heavy scattered foxing and age-toning, which continues intermittently throughout the margins of the text. Catalogue Note: This is a later 19th-century combined edition of the Second Series of The Comic Almanack, originally issued in nineteen separate annual parts between 1835 and 1853. Published by Chatto and Windus shortly after they acquired the rights to the series from John Camden Hotten in the early 1870s, this volume collects the almanacks spanning from 1844 to 1853. The work is profusely illustrated with "many hundred" quintessential engravings and cuts by the celebrated caricaturist George Cruikshank and other artists, capturing the vibrant and satirical essence of Victorian society. This edition retains the publisher's blind-stamped green cloth binding with Cruikshank's signature reproduced in gilt on the front board. Copies of this Chatto and Windus reprint appear with relative frequency on the open market, though they are frequently found with significant structural wear to the original cloth due to the unwieldy, thick text block. A delightful encapsulation of Victorian wit and whimsy, The Comic Almanack parodies the traditional, serious educational almanacs of the era. Featuring humorous poetry, merry tales, and societal satire from literary heavyweights such as William Makepeace Thackeray and the Brothers Mayhew, the text is brought to life by the masterful, eccentric illustrations of George Cruikshank. It remains a fascinating and highly entertaining window into 19th-century British humour and daily life. George Cruikshank (illustrator).

The "Comic Almanacks" of George Cruikshank have long been regarded by admirers of this inimitable artist as among his finest, most characteristic productions. Extending over a period of nineteen years, from 1835 to 1853, inclusive, they embrace the best period of his artistic career, and show the varied excellences of hismarvelous power. The late Mr. Tilt, of Fleet Street, first conceived the idea of the "Comic Almanack," and at various times there were engaged upon it such writers as Thackeray, Albert Smith, the Brothers Mayhew, the late Robert Brough, Gilbert A'Beckett, and it has been asserted, Tom Hood, the elder. Thackeray's stories of "Stubbs' Calendar, or the Fatal Boots," which subsequently appeared as "Stubbs' Diary;" and "Barber Cox, or the Cutting of his Comb," formed the leading attractions in the numbers for 1839 and 1840. The Almanack was published at 2s. 6d., but in 1848-9 the size was reduced and the price altered to 1s. The change did not produce the increased circulation expected, and in 1850 it was again enlarged and published at 2s. 6d. In this year some very spiritedly designed folding plates were added, and this feature continued until 1853, when Mr. Tilt's partner, the late Mr. Bogue, thought proper to discontinue the work. First Series 1835-1843. Second Series 1844-1853. Cruikshank, George (illustrator).

It is comprised of 239 volumes published between 1886 and 1971, among which are numerous presentation and association copies. All books in the present collection come from the shared personal library of Ogden and Frances Nash. The collection spans poetry, humor, light verse, and literary criticism, and includes a significant number of first and limited editions, often in original bindings or dust jackets. Of particular note are six books inscribed by Nash to his wife, Frances (including five authored by Nash, one of which is in an "Author's Copy" half-leather binding). Included in the collection are 59 works by Nash, three of which feature edits to the text in Nash's hand. Twenty-seven of these Nash publications are Author's copies bound in half-leather. There are an additional 48 volumes bearing inscriptions to Nash from other authors and poets, most notably twelve volumes inscribed by S.J. Perelman. Among the 132 uninscribed volumes included here, 45 bear Ogden Nash's ownership inscription (10 bear the ownership inscription of Frances Nash). The number and range of authorial inscriptions represented in the present collections reflect Nash's wide-ranging literary friendships and professional associations. Notable among these are twelve warmly inscribed titles by humorist S.J. Perelman, whose acerbic wit is on display in a series of affectionate, playful, and sometimes satirical inscriptions to both Nash and his wife, Frances. These volumes also reflect Perelman and Nash's shared experiences in Hollywood and the literary scene of mid-century America. Other highlights include inscriptions from John Betjeman, Christopher Morley, E.C. Bentley, A.P. Herbert, David McCord, William Plumer Fowler, and Holger Lundbergh, among otherseach evidencing Nash's influence and the esteem in which he was held across literary and cultural circles in the U.S. and the U.K. O.
