Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The operation of a commercial shipping route through the Northwest Passage - a 1450 kilometre marine corridor linking Baffin Bay to the Beaufort Sea - has been a recurring dream of traders since the late fifteenth century. It is now fast becoming a practical possibility with the recent discoveries of hydrocarbon and other mineral resources. A consideration of the problems this will raise is urgently necessary. The Canadian Northern Waters Project, at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, has therefore initiated a four-year programme to investigate the feasibility of expanded arctic shipping and ocean development. This title is the first result of the project. The work provides, in chapters by different authors, an in-depth review of the outstanding environmental, technological, political, economic, social and legal issues associated with arctic resource use, development and management.

Fictionalized account of the author's real-life experiences on San Quentin's Death Row following a wrongful murder conviction. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First edition, with Scribner's "A" on copyright page. Grey cloth with white lettering and motif of prison bars in black and white stripes on front board and spine. Inscribed by the author, "Sincerely, / David Lamson / Sept. 23, 1935." Very good copy, lacking dust jacket. Lamson wrote the book while on Death Row in San Quentin, having been convicted of his wife's murder. The case rivaled for a time the contemporaneous Lindbergh kidnapping in notoriety, not least because both Lamson and his wife were employed by Stanford University and were well respected members of the community. Lamson was once convicted and sentenced to death, then won a successful appeal and was retried. That and another retrial resulted in split verdicts for conviction, and a fourth trial was deemed impractical. He gained his freedom but was not exonerated. The book barely mentions his own case, which was active at the time of publication, but rather examines the system of capital punishment and the men he met on Death Row, convicts and "bulls" or prison guards. The book was published while his case was still unresolved, and the inscription in this book likewise is dated while he was still in custody. A newspaper clipping, a review of the book by John D. Barry, a columnist for the San Francisco News, is laid into the back of the back, indicating that whoever he signed the book for had been following the case. Ink stamp of "Ye Olde Book Shop," Pablo Alto, at base of rear pastedown endpaper. Signed by Author(s).
