Wraps. Zustand: Good. Side stapled wraps. 8 ½ by 11 inches. 80 pp. Artwork throughout. Later issue of this haphazardly published little magazine, being a "quintessential Beat publication," from the North Beach scene of San Francisco, it was conceived of as a way to capture "the beauty and promote the beatific life among the various mendicants, [.], poets, painters, musicians," (quote from Bob Kaufman as cited by Lawrence Ferlinghetti). This issue featuring work by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, among others. GOOD+ condition. Some rusting to the staples. Uneven fading along the extremities of the wrappers. Clay and Phillips, p. 80-81.…

Wraps. Zustand: Good. Wraps, stapled along the left edge. 8 ½ by 11 inches. Cover illustration by Jess Collins. 16 pages including covers. A single issue of this influential 'little' magazine, part of the 'mimeo revolution.' Featuring poetry by John Wieners, as well as an essay/notes from a reading at the Poetry Center in San Francisco, given by Robert Duncan in 1959. This copy is addressed in blue ink to Liam O'Gallagher in San Francisco, presumably the avant-garde sound artist and painter. O'Gallagher's San Francisco loft was known as a gathering for Beat poets, including Allen Ginsberg (see New York Times obituary for the previous information). The Floating Bear was started in 1961 as 'a mimeographed newsletter distributed by mailing list whose mission was the speedy dissemination of new literary work.' (Clay and Phillips p. 74-75). GOOD condition. Center horizontal fold crease present, with several staple holes at the top and bottom of the work. Moderate to heavy uneven browning to the paper. Minor soiling, some wrinkling as well as minor curling at the corners.…

Staple repalced, small creases and a little age-toning, about near fine. Early DiPrima publication, possibly produced for the Poets' Theater. Tabloid. Zustand: Good. Tabloid newspaper format. 28 pp. Illustrations and photos throughout. Second issue issue of this influential and boundary pushing underground paper. Edited by Allen Van Newkirk, Guerrilla adopted a Dadaesque editorial style while seeking real social change. That included critiquing the counterculture and leftist movements. In a sense, it operated much as the Situationists did, using radical and revolutionary art to chip away at mainstream culture. With work by John Sinclair, Diane DiPrima and Michael McLure, a look at Black Dada, etc. GOOD condition. Moderate to heavy toning, especially along the edges. First Edition. A complete run of the Beat literary magazine, founded in response to the suppression for reasons of "obscenity" of The Chicago Review's Winter 1958 issue. These copies have been signed a whopping 33 times by a Who's Who of the contributors and prominent figures associated with the Beat and Black Mountain schools of poetry/lit. From the collection of Joe Lee, who clearly made it his mission to meet the leading lights of the period and get their autographs over a number of years. The first issue is signed by William S. Burroughs (at a lengthy excerpt of his shot across the bow Naked Lunch, poets Robert Creeley and Denise Levertov (on ads at the rear), and folksingers Odetta and Peggy Seeger. The second issue is signed by Allen Ginsberg (dated 11/84), David Meltzer, Amiri Baraka (known as LeRoi Jones at the time; dated 11/98), artist Jules Feiffer, and poet/publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti on the rear wrap. The third issue is signed by poets Ginsberg (dated 6/12/94), Baraka, Creeley, John Ashbery; chronicler of the gay experience John Rechy, Feiffer, and Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Norman Mailer. The fourth issue signed by comedian Steve Allen on an ad for his album at the front, Ginsberg (dated 6/12/94), Levertov (on her poem "The Rainwalkers"), Creeley, Diane DiPrima, Meltzer, Gary Snyder, Michael McClure, Ashbery, and Baraka (dated 11/98). The fifth and final issue signed by Creeley, Ashbery, John Updike, Meltzer, Rechy, and Odetta (dated 3-14 '98). Ted Joans's signature is somewhere in one of these issues too; memory fails which one. All volumes Very Good or slightly better, typical age toning and some light wear, bindings a little strained. A remarkable collection of signatures of major figures in the Beat movement, the folk scene, and the Black Mountain school, with some up-and-coming novelists like Updike and Mailer thrown in; all of which together with Big Table itself really capture the zeitgeist of the late '50s and early '60s. Signed.…
