Parts of cover have been torn from right edge of front cover and large section of upper left corner of back cover. Some foxing and small stains on cover as well as small bits of clear tape along the spine holding together the binding. Light pencil scribbles on covers as well. Color illustration on front cover is richly colored and unobscured. Decorative raffia stitch through the center of the spine, tied in a knot in front. No date on title page, copyright circa 1890. Unpaginated. Pages are toned with staining and light foxing. Bottom corners of pages slightly wrinkled. Tear at side edge of first page repaired with clear tape. Comes in protective clear plastic envelope. Vintage children's book is overall shabby, but intact with beautifully preserved color illustrations throughout.

Albert Hildesheim, publisher (1843-1924) went into partnership with Charles William Faulkner in 1881 so this copy would appear to predate that. Small slim 4to, pp14 with inside covers printed and eight charming chromolithographic illustrations by Alice Reeve. Soft cover issued without DJ. Pictorial card binding in good condition with rubbing and small split to spine, a little rubbing to edges and some marking. Inside, a little aging to pages and the odd fingermark, otherwise all pages and plates in lovely clean and bright condition. A lovely copy penned by Weatherly who was estimated to have written the lyrics to at least 3,000 popular songs, among the best-known of which is the sentimental ballad "Danny Boy". A very nice copy of children's Victoriana.

Inside gift inscription to FFE paper dated "Christmas 1883" spine cracked in a couple of places with back hinge also cracked leaving book cocked but with binding still tight. All pages and illustrations in excellent condition, clean and bright with no signs of aging. a nice copy of this beautifully illustrated book.

All pages and plates in very good condition with some marks and spots of aging throughout, otherwise nice and bright. A very nice copy of this charming collection of whimsical stories and poems, beautifully illustrated.

Also many sepia illustrations to text. Professionally repaired with new endpapers. Pages foxed, mainly to prelims and margins, occasional marks to pages otherwise a sound copy of a lovely item.

Hard Cover. Zustand: Very Good binding. Weatherly was both a lawyer and a lyricist, writing the lyrics to "Danny Boy" and the wartime "Roses of Picardy". He wrote over 3000 lyrics; The Times observed in his obituary that "no practising barrister has ever before provided so much innocent pleasure" [The Times, 9 September 1929, p.7]. With full page chromolithographic illustrations, and sepia illustrations in text. A nice copy which has had some minor toning to the boards; there are no marks in the book. Not common, with only a handful of copies found on OCLC. Very Good binding.

Illustrated by H. B. P. [Beatrix Potter] (illustrator). First Edition of 'A Happy Pair' the first publication to feature illustrations by Beatrix Potter. In her mid twenties, and with the encouragement of her Uncle Henry, an admirer of her work, Beatrix decided to approach a number of publishers with illustrations of her pet rabbit, Benjamin Bouncer (usually referred to as Bounce) which could be used for greetings cards. After an initial rejection the pictures were snapped up by Hildesheimmer & Faulkner, with payment of £6 and a request to see more of her work. Some were used as Christmas or New Years' cards and six chromolithographed pictures (one repeated on the front cover) were printed alongside poems by lyricist Frank E. Weatherly in the small booklet, 'A Happy Pair'. The illustrations depict dressed bunnies, in coats, capes, aprons or smocks on various errands and jaunts and are somewhat more Victorian in style than her later work. This comes partially from the chromolithograph printing process, and also in that they are perhaps a bridge between her earlier technical natural history studies and her own playfully inventive little animals situated within carefully studied scenes. Few copies of 'A Happy Pair' still exist and they might have remained unidentified forever if it were not for the initials on each image (H. B. P.), as well as the appearance of Benjamin Bunny, on a station platform waiting for his train amongst his piles of luggage.
