From 1874 the Belgian artist lived in Paris, where he became a close friend of Baudelaire and devoted himself principally to illustrating b…ooks, notably for the French Symbolist and Decadent writers including Baudelaire, Mallarmé, and Huysmans. "Many of Rops's etchings are erotic or pornographic in tone and depict an imaginary underworld or subjects of social decadence. Despite his peculiarities, Rops was a printmaker of brilliant technique and original content whose handling of dry point (etching directly on the plate) marks him as one of the masters of the medium. He was also one of the first modern etchers to revive the neglected medium of soft-ground etching, in which the etching ground is melted into and mixed with tallow, producing the effect of lines drawn with a soft pencil or chalk. This copy was bound by Henri Creuzevault (1905-1971), a leading designer bookbinder of the early 20th century. This is a splendid example of Parisian interwar design, appropriately paired with a "highly valued fine publication" (our tran…slation, Carteret, p. 331). Creuzevault, who was also a proficient draughtsman and painter, began training as a binder after the First World War in the bindery of his father, Louis Lazare. His "art, always highly rigorous, developed throughout his life. His early style was fairly sober and traditional, progressing in the 1930s to compositions in the style of Art Deco, and 10 years later returning to an austere Classicism before the production of his bold works of the 1950s" (Benezit, p. 190). Written under a pseudonym by Eugène Rodrigues, president of the society Les Cent Bibliophiles, Faune Parisienne is a social satire of the capital. Benezit Dictionary of Artists, vol. 4, 2006; L. Near-contemporary tan crushed morocco, Creuzevault's gilt pallet to foot of front turn-in, flat spine, irregularly spaced gilt fillets running on both diagonals with white morocco onlaid dots across spine and boards, gilt fillet with white onlaid dots at corners of turn-ins, tan moiré silk endpapers patterned with white spots, edges gilt, green, red, and yellow striped bookmarkers, original cover bound at front, spine at rear. Housed in a matching quarter morocco chemise with marbled paper sides and mabrled slipcase. Slipcase rubbed, else fine.

With a separately issued lithographic invitation loosely inserted. [4], vii, [i], 109, [5]pp. Paris, H. Floury, Louis-Auguste-Mathieu Legrand (1863-1951) was born in Dijon, where he studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He moved to Paris in 1884 and met fin-de-siècle master printmaker Felicien Rops who mentored him in the art of etching and lithography. A flavour of Rops' eroticism is present in Legrand's work, though his more darkly macabre themes are less pronounced. Like Rops, he often depicted prostitutes and scenes of Parisian nightlife, and at the turn of the century he even established his studio at the Moulin Rouge. Two of his satirical works "Prostitution" and "Naturalism" landed him in an obscenity trial, and Rops connected Legrand with a likeminded lawyer friend, Eugene Rodrigues, to defended him. Rodrigues was also a writer, bibliophile and bibliographer, publishing under the nom-de-plume "Erastene Ramiro", and it seems their new friendship was more effective than his defence, as following a short prison sentence, the two men began collaborating on creative projects. The self-portrait frontispiece of this work is inscribed in the stone "a Eug. Rodrigues, mon meilleur ami." Prior to this fine catalogue showcasing Legrand's body of work, Rodrigues had produced similar publications with Felicien Rops, in both cases reproducing the artists engravings to the finest print standards. Legrand's technical expertise was recognised by the academy, and he was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1906. Loosely inserted into this volume is a rare separately issued piece of ephemera. The engraved print of a young ballerina and two policemen forms the headpiece of an invitation to Legrand's first solo exhibition at Siegfried Bing's famous Maison de l'Art Nouveau gallery, 22 rue de Provence, from the 2nd to the 15th of April 1896. A version of this invitation is held at the Hope Gallery in Salt Lake City, though the text is slightly different.
