This copy was bound by Henri Creuzevault (1905-1971), a leading designer bookbinder of the early 20th century. This is a splendid example of Parisian interwar design, appropriately paired with a "highly valued fine publication" (our tran…slation, Carteret, p. 331). Creuzevault, who was also a proficient draughtsman and painter, began training as a binder after the First World War in the bindery of his father, Louis Lazare. His "art, always highly rigorous, developed throughout his life. His early style was fairly sober and traditional, progressing in the 1930s to compositions in the style of Art Deco, and 10 years later returning to an austere Classicism before the production of his bold works of the 1950s" (Benezit, p. 190). Written under a pseudonym by Eugène Rodrigues, president of the society Les Cent Bibliophiles, Faune Parisienne is a social satire of the capital. Benezit Dictionary of Artists, vol. 4, 2006; L. Near-contemporary tan crushed morocco, Creuzevault's gilt pallet to foot of front turn-in, flat spine, irregularly spaced gilt fillets running on both diagonals with white morocco onlaid dots across spine and boards, gilt fillet with white onlaid dots at corners of turn-ins, tan moiré silk endpapers patterned with white spots, edges gilt, green, red, and yellow striped bookmarkers, original cover bound at front, spine at rear. Housed in a matching quarter morocco chemise with marbled paper sides and mabrled slipcase. Slipcase rubbed, else fine.
