In den Warenkorbhardcover. Zustand: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First edition. Minor shelf wear. Else a bright, clean copy. In this ground-breaking analysis of the world's first private banks, Edward Cohen convincingly demonstrates the existence and functioning of a market economy in ancient Athens while revising our understanding of the society itself. Challenging the primitivistic view, in which bankers are merely pawnbrokers and money-changers, Cohen reveals that fourth-century Athenian bankers pursued sophisticated transactions. Special emphasis is placed on the reflection of Athenian cognitive patterns in financial practices. Cohen shows how transactions were affected by the complementary opposites embedded in the very structure of Athenian language and thought. In turn, his analysis offers great insight into daily Athenian reality and cultural organization. Cohen embodies a role of traditional relevance in research on classical antiquity, but one that is increasingly a rarity: he is a man of affairs' who brings his practical, professional experience to bear on his historical research. Thomas J. Figueira, Bryn Mawr Classical Review [Cohen] possesses an impressive knowledge of the relevant classical and modern literature as well as a close practical acquaintance with contemporary banking, an unusual but fortuitous set of qualifications. Highly readable and contains a wealth of interesting details on social conditions generally. John R. Love, American Historical Review A thoroughly documented and imaginatively argued book that will mark a new stage in the study of Athenian banking. David C. Mirhady, Classical World.

These three volumes form Parts 3, 4, and 5 of Volume three of the papers for the MLA Conference on English Literature in Transition in the English litarture department of Purdue University. In themselves, they form a fascinating bibliography of writings about Rudyard Kipling (not his own works). The entries are arranged alphabetically from Pierre Abraham's article in La Nouvelle Revue Francaise through to a German article by Arnold Zweig. Each entry is both bibliographical and its context to warrant inclusion. Condition: A good reference set. The yellow covers are a little grubby, and there is some marking to the page edges. The main body of text in each volume remains in good readable condition, though the last four pages of the middle volume have worked loose with the back cover.

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Dust Jacket. First Edition. 233 pages; Athens was the dominant maritime power in the West from the eighth to fourth centuries BCE. Athenian preeminence insured that its maritime law was accepted throughout the Mediterranean world. Indeed, its influence outlasted Athens and is the only area of classical Greek law that wasn't replaced entirely by Roman models. Codified during the Roman period in the Rhodian Sea laws, it went on to influence the subsequent development of European commercial and maritime law. Cohen explores the development of Athenian maritime law, the jurisdiction and procedure of the courts and the Athenian principles that have endured to the present day.
