In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. First UK Printing published by Faber and Faber, London in 1935. Small 8vo., Edward Bawden designed decorative boards printed in red and brown, featuring some potatoes sitting in a colander; the illustration repeated on the wrapper. Edward Bawden…also provides a title page showing a grumpy moustached man holding a trophy and pointing to a bowlful of spuds; The BOOK a lovely, fresh and near-Fine copy, mildly pushed at the edges and to the head and foot of the spine; faint spotting to the upper edge of text block; the unclipped WRAPPER retaining the price of 2s. 6d. Very Good++ condition, slightly toned along the backstrip with a couple of creases to extremities and folds; and some light chipping to the spine ends, mostly at the head, discretely repaired internally with tape. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. A collection of some 200 recipes on the subject of the humble spud, divided into chapters on purees, salads, soups and more, and ending with a list of restaurant potato dishes explained so that the layperson may better understand such dishes as 'Pommes Mousseline' and 'Pommes en Surprise'. Heath penned some 100 recipe books over the course of his career, many featuring 'Good' in the title, and often paired with Bawden, who provided enigmatic, and often humorous illustrations and dust wrapper designs to accompany his popular recipes. As the publisher's state, "no potato lover should be without it". More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

The First UK printing published by Faber & Faber Limited, London in 1933. 8vo., publisher's oatmeal cloth with lettering in black, and colourful red and blue printed border featuring a chicken, cutlery set, fish and fruits to both boards; together in the exceptionally rare publisher's…glassine wrapper; upper edge once stained blue; fully decorative title, as well as numerous chapter headings and tailpieces throughout the text by Edward Bawden; THE BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. A clean copy, mildly pushed at spine ends; faint spotting to endpapers and the text-block, upper edge top-stain (faded) has ever-so-slightly bled onto the upper margin of a couple of pages; The WRAPPER, being the glassine, split and in two sections, creased and toned, but seldom found at all. The wrapper is protected in a removable Mylar cover. Another cook book by Ambrose Heath, following the success of 'Good Food' (1932) and 'More Good Food' (1933). This copy together with the famous illustrations by Edward Bawden, as well as a contribution from Miss M. Frood, M.B.E., who provides a note on Jam making, Fruit & Vegetable Bottling and Bread Making. Frood was warden of the Helena Club in London. The AGA, which was invented in Sweden in 1922, was introduced to the UK in 1929, and this book begins with an explanation of its use and purposes in cooking before proceeding with the recipes. The First UK Printing published by Faber and Faber Limited, London in 1933. 8vo., publisher's oatmeal-coloured cloth, decorated to both boards and spine, with figures holding vegetables and chickens, lettered in black; together in the repeat wrap…per (clipped); with reviews of other Ambrose Heath titles to the rear flap; upper edge green; with decorative title and several other headpieces by Edward Bawden to begin each chapter; The BOOK a lovely near Fine example, mildly pushed along the spine with minor offsetting and spotting, which has slightly encroached on the outer edge of the final few pages; The WRAPPER is in Very Good++ or better condition, with some light creasing at the edges and some mild shelf toning, more-so to the lower panel, and one very small chip at the foot of the spine. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. Dedicated 'For Poo', with decorations by Edward Bawden. Many of the recipes had previously appeared in The Morning Post, The Manchester Guardian, The News-Chronicle and The Evening Standard, and are published here together for the first time. A follow-up to 'Good Food', which had been published the previous year, with chapters divided up into the months of the year. Here, Heath provides further recipes in the same format, month by month according to the food most in season at the time. "The food which is in season is the best food", he writes, "good food need not of necessity be either expensive or elaborate". Recipes here include 'Economical soup', 'Anchovy Cheese' and 'Squab Pie'. Attention is drawn to the fact that the book is very much for practical use, with the cover waterproof and washable. Given this incentive, it is rather hard to find this title in such nice condition. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

Number '36' of 1060 numbered copies (60 were for presentation). The BOOK is in near Fine condition and has been protected well by the rapper. Original quarter grey cloth over…patterned paper boards, with green titling to the spine. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. A hint of spotting to the text-block. Free from inscriptions. The scarce first issue WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. The design on this wrapper repeats the design on the boards. There was also a later wrapper which was issued, which was plain with printed text only. A small chip to the upper spine extending along the upper rear edge and a slither of loss to the lower spine. Some tiny rubs to the upper corners and some toning to the spine, otherwise the wrapper design appears very fresh. The printed paper label to the front panel is complete. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The sole UK printing published by Lion and Unicorn Press, London in 1960. This is number '37' of only 200 copies issued. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just some light pushing at the spine tips and a little light unobtrusive spotting in places to the covers. Free fr…om inscriptions. Internally very clean. Profusely illustrated in colour throughout by Edward Bawden : 'The illustrations have been reproduced from Edward Bawden's sketch-book, which accounts for the shape and size of this book. To avoid spoiling the drawings, the captions have not been printed on the illustrations themselves, but at the beginning of each section.'. Printed tissue guards throughout. The famously bizarrely and humorously mistranslated English phrasebook for Portuguese speakers, which first appeared in Paris in 1836. Perhaps as early as the 1850s, Mark Twain became aware of the book; he wrote an introduction to the first American edition in 1883. Its' nonsense still amuses. This edition with an introduction by Paul Jennings. The book is protected in a removable Mylar archival cover. An increasingly elusive title and one of Bawden's highlight illustrated titles. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. First UK Printing published by Westhouse, London in 1946. 8vo., peach cloth decorated with bowl and egg design in red to upper cover; lettered in red along backstrip; in the original unclipped pictorial wrapper designed by Edward Bawden (8s. 6d. net); with title vignette and chapter he…ad drawings in line by Bawden throughout; THE BOOK a lovely copy, slightly bruised to spine ends with some creasing along spine; upper edge a trifle toned; light spotting throughout, some slightly heavier splash marks to p. 120-121; and marginally toned, else a Very Good+ clean copy. A small bookseller sticker to the lower front pastedown. The WRAPPER toned, but otherwise also in Very Good+ condition ; lightly creased to folds and toned to the upper edge; a couple of small closed tears; unrestored. Provenance: Small ownership bookplate of F. R. Furber to the front paste-down. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. First edition of this scarce post-war cookbook, with notes by Angela Carter (not the author of Bloody Chamber fame, but instead a dietetic expert, who provides insight into the Vitamins, minerals, and other health benefits of each recipe.) A charming cookbook, which would have relied heavily on the ingredients available at the time, when rationing was still in place. The UK was the last country involved in World War II to stop rationing food, with the final item being meat in 1954. Delicacies here include brawn (' If you can get the butcher to pickle the pig s head for ten days, do so, otherwise rub salt well in and leave for 24 hours, but this is not so good. The butcher will chop the head and remove the eyes' ), cold ox-tail jelly, liver with apple, marrow stew, queen of puddings, chestnut balls, cherry brandy, and even several recipes for Lobster. Lobster was considered a delicacy during the war, and as such was not rationed, allowing them to be consumed at unprecedented rates. The celebrated artist Edward Bawden (1903-1989) was not new to cookery illustration at the time this work was published. During the 1930s, he had collaborated with Ambrose Heath on a series of cookery books, which included titles such as Good Food, More Good Food, Good Food for the Aga, Good Drinks, and Good Food Without Meat. Bawden s charming and often humorous illustrations here show oversized hands tucking into bowls of sugar, slicing cake, and in one instance sliding open a box of macaroni, generally offset against unlikely countryside backgrounds. Scarce in the wrapper. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
