(B&W photographs, line drawings) Condensed versions of various classics, selected by various "famous children" (which for the most part actually means "children of famous people"). There are a number of movie-kids involved, e.g. the children of John Barrymore (Dolores and John Jr.), Harold Lloyd (Gloria, Peggy and Harold Jr.), Barbara Stanwyck (Dion), etc., and of course child stars, genuinely famous on their own: Freddie Bartholomew, Shirley Temple, Jane Withers. Plenty of other recognizable names pop out at you from the table of contents, such as Kitty-Clemens Gotwals (a cousin of Mark Twain), Ulysses S. Grant V (you figure that one out), Josepha Heifetz (daughter of Jascha), Jarvis Rockwell (Norman's son), Irving Thalberg Jr., Paul Whiteman Jr., Lawrence Tibbett Jr. -- you get it, Junior. NOISBN. Multiple sections bound together in library binding; each section individually paginated. Sections are numbered as follows: 324, 422, 578 -- published, respectively, in 1929, and 1932, 1936. The first section is titled "Wind Tunnel Tests on an Airfoil Equipped with a Split Flap and a Slot". 6 pages. The next is titled "The Aerodynamic Characteristics of a model Wing Having a Split Flap Deflected Downward and Moved to the Rear". 7 pages. Section 3 is titled "Full-Scale Wind-Tunnel and Flight Tests of a Fairchild 22 Airplane Equipped with a Fowler Flap". 19 pages. Each section is followed by multiple figures and tables. The entire volume, with original covers, has a later library binding. Gutters at front and back reinforced with white cloth. Two library stamps and some writing in pen on the front free endpaper. Pages within are clean and free of foreign markings. Light rubbing to covers. Comes from a large collection of technical memorandums from the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics before the committee was abolished upon creation of NASA in 1958. Scarce children's book with verse by Pauline Geffen and striking art deco, jazz age illustrations by C E Miallard. Only 5 copies found in instituttional holdings searched by Worldcat. This copy is worn but complete. Bound in full orange cloth with wrapround pictorial design in green and black; spine unlettered, as isued. A fingernail sized gouge with loss to the cloth near the tail of the spine; binding shaken and weak in the joints. Cloth rubbed a little at edges with moderate shelf soiling to surfaces. Handling evidence to pages with here and there a short nick or tear to a page edge and light scattered soiling. Prior owner name penciled to front pastedown. Millard's pictorial designs executed in a combinations of orange, green and black, some in-text, others full page. They are quite striking and fanciful with decided Art Deco and Jazz age flourishes. Scarce, this copy is Good only at best.…

During her brief writing career, Monica Shannon (1905?-65) produced a variety of children's books and won the prestigious Newbery Medal. Shannon was born in Belleville, Ont., but moved to the United States before her first birthday. The appreciation of nature she developed while growing up on a ranch in the Bitter Root Valley of the Rocky Mountains was later reflected in her books. She attended schools in Washington, Idaho, and California, and worked as a librarian at the Los Angeles Public Library. Shannon published her first book, 'California Fairy Tales', in 1926, weaving together colorful stories and observations of California's natural history.Shannon wrote her best-known work, the 1935 Newbery Medal-winner 'Dobry', in 1934).
