Mérimée is best known for this novella Carmen, which became the basis of Georges Bizet's opera Carmen. Contains [ix], 203 printed pages of text with with 16 intricate full-page colour plates with lettered paper guards, and 74 large monochrome illustrations throughout. Roosevelt: December 8, 1941, To October 12, 1942. (illustrator). First Edition. Quarto [2], 76pp, [1]. Publisher's blue printed wraps, title printed in gold on front cover. Bound at spine, with light sunning edges, chip at head of spine. (Halter T-755) Unique inscription from John Valentine to Adams: "For F.D. Adams, Jr. - This is supposedly a "hush-hush" publication by the Library of Congress, for distribution abroad only, propaganda-like." John Valentine / Jan. 1944." From Halter: Probably published in November 1942, by the Office of War Information, strictly for foreign distribution. Also issued in several other languages. A supplement was published by the OWI in 1943 and final edition in 1945, each with additional material. Includes the first printed examples of Fireside Chats from April 28, 1942, September 3, 1942 and October 12, 1942. As well as the Flag Day Address of June 14, 1942. Provenance: From the private collection of Frederick B. Adams, bibliographer of President Roosevelt and director of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. His collection was sold by Sotheby's in 2001.

Title high-lighted in gilt. Rubáiyát over unnumbered pages carrying the 75 quatrains of Edward FitzGerald's version enriched with 10 full-page mounted colour plates and 19 mounted vignettes by René Bull, many line drawings and borders. Just a little foxing to the end sheets, one tiny nick to the top of the spine and in Very Good square and tight condition. Member of the P.B.F.A. Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám.
