Cover a bit dustsoiled, interior with some foxing spots. Very rare and early example of a labour union movement by the workers in the printing industry in Brussels (Belgium). Because of their literacy they were among the first of the workers to organize themselves in unions.…

2. Bruxelles, Imprimerie et Lithographie des Beaux-Arts, 1851, small in-folio, 31 x 23,5 cm, 127 pp + 16 plates h.t. (engravings, lithographies and two toned litho plates), publisher's cased binding. (Top of spine damaged, corners bumped, gilt paper of the covers oxydized). This well illustrated report on the Brussels' salon of 1851 was published in installments. On the title page the publisher announces 20 plates, the index (published at the end of the run) mentions 16 plates. The text ends at pp. 127. We could compare our copy with another copy which contains an index with 20 plates. That copy contained also 168 text pages. So we catch our publisher in the fraudulent act of publishing an incomplete copy ( in a publisher's binding) for which he even printed a shortened index. No wonder he went bankrupt in 1854. Nearly complete set , spanning a century, of this periodical published by the Brussels' Royal Museum for Art and Art History, better known as '' Le Musée du Cinquantenaire'' after the building where it is housed. The publication consists of 6 series. Series I ; Première Année -> Sixième Année (1901 - 1906/07), format in-folio, 29,5 x 20 cm, published as a monthly, ca. 100 pp per year. Some out of text plates. Bound in 4 volumes. Series II ; Première Année ( 7th year since beginning) -> Treizième Année (13th since beginning) (1908 - Mai 1914 = last pre-war issue). In-folio, bound with a part of the first series in two red cloth volumes). Series III ; 1929-1946 (18 years.) Première année - Dixhuitième Année. Décember 1939 is a special issue containing an index for 1929-1938. Format small in-4°, 24 x 17,5 cm, two-monthly issues of between 24 and 48 pp, first stapled issues , later sewn with wrapper. 1945 and 1946 consist of one issue for a whole year. Al issues of the 3rd series with original wrapper, as published. Series IV ; 1947- 1967 (21 years) Dixneuvième année - Trenteneuvième année, same format as series III, yearly issues of between 130 and 250 pp. In the original wrapper. 10. Bruxelles, Imprimerie Photographique, in-4°, 30 x 22 cm, cont. half-cloth, title page + 88 pp + 10 lithographs (one coloured) + ii (index). The separately printed index leaf mentions the bankruptcy of the publisher and states that only 11 plates will be present in the publication which halts at page 88. The list of the plates however contains only 10 plates. Periodical issued on the occassion of the Brussels' Salon of 1854. Lutherau (also using as alias Vicomte de Robertval, Jacques Le Normand, Japhet , Un peintre d'Histoire, A.L. etc. - see De Le Court) was editor of the Brussels art periodical ''La Renaissance'' and published well-illustrated Salon critiques. This is his last album (1854) . Here he uses for the first time in Belgium photography to reproduce art works in lithography ( the lithographs are based on photographs). As is the fate of many pioneers he went broke during the production of this album . He returned to his homeland France. (Van der Marck pp. 204 ). This important first step in the use of photography for book illustration is exceedingly rare. No copy outside Belgium (only two Belgian libraries have a copy of this publication). . Apart from an intresting article on the history of the Belgian Salon by Luthereau, the different entries deal with the pictures and sculptures on show. The lithographs are made after photographs mostly by Gross, therefore this periodical offers a very early example of press illustration by means of photography. From the library of Jules De Paepe, with his ex-libris tipped in on the first pastedown. Very rare publication in fine condition.…
