Boards are slightly exposed along edges, and covers are faded a bit, but overall remain clean. Front and rear gutters are cracked but binding feels quite strong still. A very good copy, for its age (1926), of the presumed first edition of this "essay on the great Master-Printers and their work" including the history of printing at the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, by the curator of that museum, Maurits Sabbe. Cover: cream coloured paper with art nouveau design in brown to front, and brown lettering to front and spine, with fold-in flaps; very clean for its age but some spine fading; some cracking/splitting to spine and rubbing to all edges, but all present; remarkable for a paperback book almost 100 years old. Internally: very clean and tightly bound for its age; probably hand cut; some tanning to pages and darkening to page edges; very neat signature of previous owner (dated 1945) to pre-title page; no other markings or book plates. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos and some woodcuts. 114 pp. plus 6 pp. advertising material. Also included: 2 tiny original photographs of the exterior of the Museum and 2 10"x7" enlargements of each photo all in photographic preservative sleeve with Plantin Museum, Antwerp - visited, Oct 1994 handwritten on exterior.

8vo., First Edition, with title in red and black, 11 tipped-in illustrations in red by Pennell, neat signature on front paste-down, page-edges lightly browning; boards gilt, small tear at extreme head of backstrip, blank lower outer corner removed from one leaf (not affecting text), a good, firm copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter browned, frayed at edges and wanting most of backstrip. Pennell's pen drawings first appeared in Devinne's 'Christopher Plantin and the Plantin Museum' published for the Grolier Club in 1888.
