With a photographic frontispiece showing Lieutenant Blise. ***Very good in red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and borders to the spine and gilt titles and decoration to the front board. The gilt on the spine has dulled with age but the gilt on the front board is nice and bright. The spine has browned somewhat with age and handling. The head and tail of the spine are slightly creased and frayed. Corners fairly sharp. The cloth of the boards is slightly rippled on the front board near to the spine, and is marked on the back board. Internally very good with hardly any foxing. Interior pages clean. No inscriptions. Spine tight. No dustwrapper. ***195 mm x 135 mm. 301 pages, plus a two-page publisher's catalogue at the back of the book. ***'Fritz Oswald Bilse (born March 31, 1878 in Kirn, Rhine Province, died 1951 in Eberswalde, Brandenburg ) was a German writer and lieutenant in the Prussian army. He also wrote under the pseudonyms Fritz von der Kyrburg and Fritz Wernthal. He became famous in 1903 with the military critical novel "From a Small Garrison Town". The novel, in which Lieutenant Bilse targets the customs of the garrison and the Prussian-German military, became a scandalous success. Bilse's military background is of direct importance to the genesis of the book. Bilse usually did not develop a good relationship with his superiors or his comrades: "The thoughtful young man becomes a critic of the army. Instead of becoming a member of the officers' corps, he takes on the role of a distant observer. In his company commander he finds a fatherly friend with whom he can discuss ideas about reforming the army. But he openly denies his commander the respect and incurs a number of disciplinary punishments." During a temporary dismissal in 1902, the novel From a Small Garrison was also written. In November 1903 a court martial took place in Metz. Bilse was found guilty of insulting his superiors and other senior officers, dishonorable discharge from the army and sentenced to six months in prison. His novel should be "withdrawn from circulation, the printing blocks destroyed". The ban does not seem to have lasted, however, as the 150th thousand of the book appeared in Braunschweig as early as 1904. The disclosure of appalling grievances in the army was discussed in the Reichstag , and even the emperor reacted with a secret decree "to all commanding generals with the instruction to pay attention to conditions like Bilse described them in their associations and to deal with them with even greater zeal. To guard morale and discipline in their troops". Bilse had suddenly become famous: from then on he was considered the enfant terrible of the German army. The novel was highly traded abroad, initially in France. As early as 1904, an English translation appeared with a protocol of the trial in the appendix as well as an introduction and a foreword in which the German-American writer Theodore Dreiser praised Bilse as a great realist. Édition originale de la traduction française de ce roman décrivant tous les vices des officiers allemands dans les petites garnisons-frontières. "Petite Garnison est une ?uvre vécue, écrite absolument sans prétention littéraire. Les scènes comiques y sont pourtant vivement croquées et le dialogue spirituellement conduit. (?) La passion que son livre a soulevé dans toute l'Allemagne, et le soin pris par l'autorité militaire d'en faire mettre au pilori tous les exemplaires et briser les clichés, tendrait à faire supposer qu'on a reconnu, ailleurs qu'en Alsace-Lorraine, "qu'il y a quelque chose de pourri dans le royaume de Danemark" (note du traducteur). Entré dans l?armée en 1896, à l?âge de dix-huit ans, Fritz Oswald Bilse (1878-1951) devient officier en 1898 et rejoint deux ans plus tard le Lothringisches Train-Bataillon Nr. 16 stationné à Forbach. Là, ce fils d?instituteur issu de la petite bourgeoisie de province perd ses illusions sur l?armée. En juillet 1903, il envoie sa lettre de démission, tandis que paraît au même moment son roman chez un libraire de Braunschweig.
