Bernard Wall's greatest achievement is his eighty-five volume series called Following Abraham Lincoln. For eleven years he followed the footsteps of our great war President in his travels, making etchings - several hundred of them- of the Lincoln landmarks in America. These were etched on copper plates and printed on a hand press by the artist at Lime Rock. It was a big undertaking. Had it not been a labor of love, it is doubtful that Mr. Wall could have carried the work through to completion. . . .While visiting the Lincoln shrines Mr. Wall gathered together intimate glimpses from people in the various communities, that reveal the true character of Lincoln. It contains the complete text of the Gettysburg Speech on 8 etched leaves and is illustrated with 8 etched plates, two of which are signed in pencil by Wall. Additional etchings include a limitation statement and a portrait of Lincoln, both of which are also signed by Wall. This "cancelled plate" issue is EXTRA ILLUSTRATED by the addition of two additional plates being strikes of the two cancelled copper plates printed after the plates were cancelled; internally the condition of the book is fine. Black cloth backed paper covered boards bound by Wall, with paper label to front cover with manuscript titles signed by Wall; boards with stains and wear. [20] pp. This is a superb album of original artwork, eighteen pencil sketches, one color pastel drawing and one watercolor painting, many of which were the basis of Wall's later etchings. The subjects are: Marshal Joffre, Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, William Jennings Bryan, Seth Low, H. W. Ranger, Charles S. Whitman, David Bennett Hill, Col. Ardolph L. Kline, Samuel Gompers, Ilya Tolstoi, F. Hopkinson Smith, J. J. Pastoriza, Josephus Daniels, Fannie Brice, W. R. Nelson, Frank Bacon, George R. Boynton and Rigo Jansci; each sketch is titles on the mount in Wall's hand, and most have brief notes as to date and place of sketching, with some containing additional details. A good example of the additional details added by Wall can be found on the mount of his sketch of Woodrow Wilson: "Woodrow Wilson / Governor N.J. / Summer 1912 / Addressing Spanish War / Veterans / At National Encampment / Atlantic City. He said he never had been a soldier, but could assure us he was a fighter any how - in the cause of righteousness. This was the prime inspiration for the plate 'Commander in Chief' made on our entry into the war - to which he took exception - on account of its military uniform. One of 100 sets. Weber, "Following Bernhardt Wall, 1872-1956," pp. 38-41 Bernhardt Wall was born in Buffalo, New York on Dec. 30, 1872. He studied at the Buffalo Art Student's League then moved on to study in New York under Henry Reuterdahl and also apprenticed under William Auerbach-Levy. Wall began a career as a lithographic illustrator in 1889 working primarily as a commercial artist in New York and Buffalo. He soon became known as the "Postcard King" and designed over 5,000 comic cards. The year 1915 marked a defining point in Wall's artistic career. Wall visited Colorado, Nevada and California making etchings of Indians, cowboys and major cities which were later published in a portfolio entitled, "Under Western Skies." These proved to be very successful and the artist shortly thereafter moved to California permanently. Wall continued to produce many fine etchings of the American West and by 1930 had also become a much respected historian of the region.Bernhardt Wall was unique in that he not only drew the etchings for his books, but he also printed and bound them. His books are in libraries and universities around the world including the British Museum, Library of Congress, the libraries of Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Brown Universities. His works were also in the private collections of J. P. Morgan, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Henry C. Frick and Dr. N.C. Mathewson. Wall etched three sitting presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Warren Taft, and Henry Coolidge. Other prominent individuals etched by Wall include Sam Houston, Mark Twain, Thomas A.
