Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Dawn Boy: Blackfoot and Navajo Songs' is a profound collection of Indigenous oral traditions, meticulously adapted for the written page by Eda Lou Walton. This volume brings together the rhythmic beauty and spiritual depth of the Blackfoot and Navajo peoples, offering readers an evocative glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the North American Southwest and the Great Plains. The work presents various chants, songs, and ceremonial verses that reflect the deep connection between these nations and the natural world.Throughout the collection, Walton captures the lyrical essence of Navajo 'Hozhoni' songs and Blackfoot narratives, preserving the poetic structures and symbolic imagery inherent in their traditional storytelling. The verses explore themes of creation, daily life, and the sacred relationship between the individual and the cosmos. As a significant contribution to early 20th-century ethno-poetics, this book serves as both a literary tribute and a vital record of Native American oral literature.Whether read as a study of Indigenous folklore or as a collection of evocative poetry, 'Dawn Boy: Blackfoot and Navajo Songs' remains a compelling testament to the enduring power of these cultural voices. Its lyrical translations make the complex spiritual landscapes of the Blackfoot and Navajo accessible to a wider audience while honoring the integrity of the original source material. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work was reproduced from the original artifact, and remains as true to the original work as possible. In den WarenkorbHardcover with Dust Jacket. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition, First Printing. A STORY OF NAVAJO CHILDHOOD WRITTEN WITH SYMPATHY AND FIRSTHAND KNOWLEDGE. Eda Lou Walton, noted educator, folklorist, and author of children's literature inspired by the American Southwest, presents the adventures of Navajo twins whose lives bridge traditional culture and the modern world. Drawing upon Navajo legends, customs, and daily life, Walton created one of the more attractive juvenile books of the period, enhanced by L. Valentine's striking illustrations. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Octavo; 8¼ inches tall; xii, 202 pages. +++ First Edition, First Printing. +++ Bound in tan woven cloth, lettered and decorated in deep brown on the front board and spine. The cover features a bold stylized design of radiating sunbeams sweeping across the lower board toward a mesa on the horizon, executed in the geometric Art Deco style then associated with Southwestern design. Brown topstain. Decorated endpapers. +++ Illustrated by L. Valentine with a full-color frontispiece and twenty-seven full-page pen-and-ink illustrations reproduced by line-block process, each integral to the narrative. +++ Original publisher's dust jacket, priced $1.75, now protected in a Mylar sleeve. CONDITION: Near Fine in a Very Good dust jacket. The bindings are tight and square. Text clean; light, even age-toning. The tan cloth retains its original color with no sun-fading, showing only minor scattered age-spotting on the spine. The dust jacket shows moderate handling wear with several small corner chips and light edge wear, while remaining bright and attractive. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: A Respectful Portrait of Navajo Childhood - Published during a period when Native Americans were often portrayed through stereotypes in juvenile fiction, Turquoise Boy and White Shell Girl distinguishes itself by presenting Navajo family life with unusual sympathy and respect. Eda Lou Walton drew upon years spent in the American Southwest, weaving traditional stories, ceremonies, and everyday customs into an engaging narrative intended to foster understanding rather than romantic fantasy. The Southwest in American Children's Literature. During the early twentieth century, publishers increasingly introduced young readers to the cultures and landscapes of the American West. Walton's work belongs among the better examples of this movement, emphasizing family, community, and cultural identity while portraying the dramatic landscapes of the Navajo homeland. Her stories encouraged curiosity about Native traditions at a time when relatively few juvenile books attempted to depict Indigenous life with empathy. Illustrated in the Southwestern Style. L. Valentine's illustrations complement the text with bold decorative line drawings inspired by Southwestern design and Native American artistic motifs. Together with the striking Art Deco binding and dust jacket, they create one of Thomas Y. Crowell's more attractive illustrated juvenile productions of the early 1930s. SUBJECTS: Eda Lou Walton, Navajo, Diné, Native American Juvenile Fiction, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Indigenous Culture, L. Valentine, Illustrated Books, Thomas Y. Crowell, American Southwest, Children's Books, First Edition, Juvenile Literature; Native American Studies; Southwestern Americana; Illustrated Books; Historical Fiction; Children's Literature.…
