Seltenes Bilderbuch. Erzählt wird die Geschichte der kleinen Fanny, die zwei kleinen Bäckern mit riesigen, weißen Mützen bei der Zubereitung ihres Geburtstagskuchen zuschauen darf. Begleitend erzählt die Mutter, was alles zur Herstellung eines Kuchens benötigt wird, und dass es jeweils eine Fee sei, die z.B. das Mahlen des Mehls besorgt, die Hitze im Ofen macht oder den Kuchen aufgehen lässt ("she is called the Fairy of Fermentation"). Damit das Kind keinen bleibenden Schaden davonträgt, schließt die Mutter mit dem für Erwachsene beruhigenden Satz: "We don't usually call them Fairies, but "Forces of Nature".". - Die reizenden Illustrationen schuf August Hutaf (1874-1942). Neben Bilderbüchern entwarf er auch Plakate sowie - und dafür ist er besonders bekannt - zahlreiche Postkartenserien (u.a. für den Verlag Ullman). - Vortitel mit Geschenkvermerk, sonst innen schön.
