In den WarenkorbZustand: Very Good -. Third edition, limited. 55; 538pp. Quarto [30cm]. Primarily bound in original black cloth, with elaborate gilt stamped design on the front board. Gilt topstain. Professionally and tastefully rebacked in matte, black goatskin with two gilt stamped labels bearing title, author and publisher. Other subtle rest…oration work includes reinforcement of the hinges and replacement of the tissue paper protecting frontispiece. There is sporadic foxing, and the "List of Illustrations" page is detached, but present. Complete, with 22 full page or double-page illustrations. Hundreds of small, intricate in-text illustrations and initials. The first edition of this volume marked Aubrey Beardsley's first commision as an illustrator. The publisher intended a straightforward contribution to the Gothic revival movement (inspired by William Morris' Kelmscott Press) but Beardsley's style, fresh and distinctive, instead helped define the emerging Art Nouveau movement. He was considered a controversial figure in Art Nouveau, satirizing Victorian morality by embracing the dark and grotesque. This third edition was limited to 1,600 copies. It includes 10 illustrations omitted from the first along with two illustrations previously unprinted in "Le Morte d'Arthur.".

Likely a separate printing from the book.Published in the 1896 edition of Alexander Pope's 'The Rape of the Lock' (1714), Beardsley's drawing illustrates the moment the heroine Belinda attacks the Baron (opposite) with her fan after discovering he has cut and stolen a lock o…f her hair during their game of cards (Canto V: 75-102). The clothing worn by the subjects portray a range of styles in vogue in England in the 18th century. Beardsley's nine illustrations for this edition of 'The Rape of the Lock' were enthusiastically received by the British press before his untimely death in 1898.

In den WarenkorbNew York: John Lane. 1898. 4to. Original green cloth, ornate gilt decoration and lettering to upper board, gilt lettering to spine, largely uncut; pp. xlv, [1], 193, [1], eight illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley including reproduction of cover design, frontispiece, and six illuminated initials; endpapers a little browned; very go…od copy.First edition, the American sub-issue, no. 193 of 1000 copies, of Beardsley's final, uncompleted commission. This issue appears without Beardsley's 'Puck on Pegasus' device in gilt to the rear boardcover, although it does appear on the title- page. Both Samuels Lasner and the book's own subtitle call for five initial letters, but there are six, one for each act and one for the 'Argument', as detailed on the list of illustrations (p. xi). Beardsley was commissioned by Leonard Smithers to illustrate this book, originally conceived as an edition de luxe with twenty four plates, frontispiece, initial letters and small drawings, in November 1897. His health was already failing due to tuberculosis and when he died in March 1898 he had only produced the illustrations seen here. Despite his fading powers, Beardsley was excited about the project, finding that Jonson's depiction of a greedy and depraved world chimed with his own artistic vision. He wrote that 'I carry Volpone about with me from dawn to dawn and dream of nothing else' and considered his illustration for the frontispiece, 'Volpone Adoring His Treasure', was 'one of the strongest things I have ever done' (cited in Nelson, p. 163). Such was the importance attached to this book as a monument to Beardsley's talent that a number of his fellow Decadents were involved in the final publication. Robert Ross wrote an affectionate eulogy that formed the basis of his 1909 biography of Beardsley, Vincent O'Sullivan provided an essay on Jonson that tied him to the fin de siecle sensibility, and Ernest Dowson anonymously edited the text. Provenance: front free endpaper with inkstamp of Baragwanath, a prominent family linked to Cornwall. Gallatin, pp. 69-70; Samuels Lasner 129. See ; James G. Nelson, Publisher to the Decadents: Leonard Smithers in the Careers of Beardsley, Wilde and Dowson .(2000).

However, the Lord Chamberlain prohibited performances because of a ban on Biblical figures being presented on stage, an outcome that understandably incensed Wilde. It was finally published in French in 1893, and then in this translation in 1894. Translating the nuances of Wilde's original text, written in an idiosyncratic French, has been acknowledged as a Herculean task by all those who have attempted it, including Beardsley. Even though Wilde himself assisted Douglas, the author and the translator nearly came to blows: 'Wilde immediately complained of Douglas's sloppy, schoolboy French, and an infuriated Douglas blamed any faults upon the original. He and Wilde nearly split over the disagreements, and Robbie Ross - doubtless to his later regret - made peace between them that Fall' (Daniel). Though Wilde tried to fix some of the errors, Douglas raged when he did, and wrote to the publishers that September, 'as I cannot consent to have my work altered and edited, and thus to become a mere machine for doing the rough work of translation, I have decided to relinquish the affair altogether.' (Daniel). Nevertheless, their relationship recovered, and the translation has since become the text most familiar to Anglophone audiences. Steven Berkoff used the Douglas translation for his critically acclaimed Salome at the National Theatre in 1988, with all its archaisms and errors unabridged.Sadly, Wilde never saw the play produced. Its only performance during his lifetime was a one-off presentation at the Theatre de la Comedie-Parisienne on 11 February 1896, by which time he was already in prison. It was not performed publicly in Britain until 1931.Mason 350; Ross, 'Later Work' 86; Samuels Lasner 59. Edited by Arthur Symons and published by the notorious Leonard Smithers, the magazine's eight beautifully designed issues featured stories, poems, and literary criticism. Joseph Conrad's first short story was published in the sixth issue, and other contributors included W.B. Yeats, Havelock Ellis, Edmund Gosse, George Bernard Shaw, and Max Beerbohm. The brightest start in the firmament was Aubrey Beardsley, though even his stunning illustrations didn't generate enough sales to keep the magazine going. Arthur Symons announced its cessation in the seventh issue: "We will therefore retire from the arena, not entirely dissatisfied, if not a trifle disappointed, leaving to those who care for it our year's work, which will be presented to you in three volumes, in a cover of Mr. Beardsley's designing. When we come before you again, it will be in a more luxurious form, for which you shall pay more, but less often.".

Originally created in 1894, ?The Eyes of Herod? forms part of Aubrey Beardsley?s celebrated suite of illustrations for Oscar Wilde?s Salom?, a work that became emblematic of the Decadent movement in late Victorian Britain. Beardsley?s illustrations, with their provocative imagery and refined graphic precision, challenged conventional aesthetics and helped redefine modern book illustration. Published posthumously in editions such as this 1907 Bodley Head issue, these images ensured the continued influence of Beardsley?s vision into the 20th century. His work would go on to shape Art Nouveau, early modernist design, and the broader language of graphic art.
