"The Constitution of the Atom and Spectral Lines" was written by the German physicist Arnold Sommerfeld (1868-1951), first published in German in 1919 and translated into by H. Bellenot. The book presents Sommerfeld's research on the structure of the atom, particularly his extension of the Bohr model of the atom to include elliptical orbits and relativistic corrections. Sommerfeld's work on the structure of the atom was important in the development of quantum mechanics and helped to explain the behavior of atoms and their emission of spectral lines. In the book, he discusses the properties of atoms, the nature of spectral lines, and the role of quantum mechanics in understanding atomic structure. He also introduces the concept of the fine structure constant, which characterizes the strength of the electromagnetic interaction between charged particles. "La constitution de l'Atome et les Raies Spectrales" was a significant contribution to the development of atomic physics and helped to establish Sommerfeld as one of the leading physicists of his time.
