Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Communications - Broadcast and entertainment, grade: 1,0, University of Groningen (Faculty of Arts ), course: Language, Communication and Culture, language: English, abstract: According to Lakoff and Johnson (1980), metaphors involve a mapping of a tangible source domain on an intangible target domain and enable therefore the expression of concepts difficult to verbalise as such. ROMANTIC LOVE is one of these concepts. Indeed, ¿romantic love is commonly thought of as a mysterious emotion which it is notoriously difficult to pin down. [¿] Various authors in various disciplines have expressed the view that this is a concept that is difficult to grapple with and define¿ (Kövecses, 1986). By analysing the conceptual metaphors used to describe ROMANTIC LOVE in conventionalised language, Kövesces succeeded to describe the constituents and structure of this concept.Kövecses research on the concept of ROMANTIC LOVE and the cultural variation of metaphor is based exclusively on verbal evidence. As Charles Forceville (2005:69) acknowledged, ¿in the interest of enriching insights into ideological conceptual metaphors, non-verbal and multimedial representations need to be investigated as well¿; mostly in order to break ¿the vicious cycle of saying that verbal metaphoric expressions are evidence of conceptual metaphors, and then saying that we know that because we see conceptual metaphors expressed in language¿ (Cienki, 1998). The present paper aims to extend Kövecses research by analysing the visual expression of ROMANTIC LOVE and its cross-cultural variation in comics. Indeed, as Forceville (2005:71) mentioned, ¿comics are a good source of pictorial data for such a project: unlike, for instance, realistic photographs and live-action films, which are more or less ¿naturally¿ mirror real-life manifestations of emotions, comics and cartoons make use of stereotypical exaggerations and of a rudimentary ¿sign-system¿ very much like a language¿.In a first part, our paper will show how Kövecses¿ characterisation of the concept of ROMANTIC LOVE surfaces visually in the comic Asterix. The second part of this paper aims to explore this cross-cultural variation in the visual domain by comparing the results of the analysis of Asterix to Japanese Manga. Our research will be done on following data: three volumes of German translations of the French comic Asterix Asterix (Asterix als Legionär (Vol. 10), Asterix und Latraviata (Vol. 31), and Obelix auf Kreuzfahrt (Vol. 30)) and the Japanese manga I¿¿s (Vol. 7), Tsubasa (Vol. 13), Natsuki Takaya (Vol. 3). In all of these comics, romantic love plays an essential role.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 28 pp. Englisch.

The Labour party wanted to give the parents the possibility to see the difference between the schools and to assess their choices realistically. The school league tables include data about achievement and attainment from different sources, for example the Sats, the GCSE and the A-Level qualifications. One topic or event will never be identically described by two historianseven if they are given the very same materials and sources to work with. As a consequencehistoriography can only try to create an image, as true and original as possible, but is neverable to depict everything that happened as it actually was in its full scope. So there wereand always will be fictional elements and interpretations in the reports and writings aboutpast events. This assumption leads us to historiographic metafiction, a style of writing thatemerged during the postmodern era. If there is fiction in scholarly historiography, where isthe difference between that and a novel that deals with history This term paper will try togive an answer to that question and examine features and characteristics of historiographicmetafiction, which eventually will be applied to Kurt Vonnegut¿s Slaughterhouse-Five. Inpostmodern literature and, of course, especially in historiographic metafiction, authorstried to find new ways of telling stories and particularly representing history. I will take acloser look at the narrative frame and especially the concept of time Vonnegut used in thenovel. But how is history represented in Slaughterhouse-Five This will be the second partof the analysis that will attempt to find answers why Vonnegut wrote the novel the way hedid. I will reflect on the influences of the immigrants who entered the USA to build a brave new world, different to the old wo rld of Europe, which they assumed to be overpopulated and morally corrupt. On the basis of several selected books and articles, like those of Bill Malone, Seymor Martin Lipset and Rachel Rubin, I will emphasize the meaning of the most traditional music of America. Analyzing changes in the musical development, I will explain them as a consequence of the country¿s changing social circumstances by using the example of the Bakersfield movement in the 1930s. I will furthermore outline the most important facts and events regarding the music, including the life and work of Merle Haggard, who perfectly represented the theme of nostalgia in country music. At the end, I will emphasize the commercial aspect of country music, its Western image and the high efficiency of the Nashville music publishing industry.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

It does not make a difference whether it is poetryin the mother tongue or poetry in a foreign language; it just seems that poetry ingeneral does not seem to be very popular. Skipping through the currentschoolbooks the impression occurs that poetry only plays a subordinate role. Also, when under time pressure and the necessity to drop certain topics, poetryseems to be among the first ones to be dropped. The question arises whether thisis due to teachers who never found access to poetry The extra effort it mighttake to prepare for a poetry lesson Or is it lacking courage to approach a topicthat seems to be unpopular It is up to teachers to either inspire or discouragepupils when it comes to poetry. This inspiration or discouragement may last alifetime. Many pupils probably consider poetry as ¿un-cool¿. But in the time of events likeliterature and poetry slams, which are highly enjoyed by many pupils andstudents, it should be worth re-thinking the attitude about poetry and to bringpoetry to the classrooms. With this paper I would like to show approaches, activities and ideas howteachers can make poetry more popular in the classroom.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Then the focus shifts to the fields of application of corpus linguistics, and also the use in syntax and morphology is discussed. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Bayreuth, course: PS Whodunit, language: English, abstract: If we think about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his writings, we automatically think about Sherlock Holmes. But what about his partner and friend Dr. Watson Is he not as important as his famous companion Maybe he does not solve the mysteries and crimes maybe he is even a little slow and featherbrained. But Dr. Watson should not be underestimated. He functions as the mediator between the story and the reader. Speaking of a mediator implies that this instrument builds a connection between two poles. In this case it is the figure of Dr. John Hamish Watson. Mediation occurs for example if a call center should connect two business partners. Without a connection both could in fact speak but would not be able to either understand or hear each other. Hence the question arises between which two poles Dr. Watson is a mediator One of these poles lies similarly to Dr. Watson within Fiction. Namely Sherlock Holmes. On the other hand the second pole lies beyond fiction. It is the reader or even better the readership. So to speak Dr. Watson mediates between the internal text and action and the external world and surroundings, between fiction and reality. First I want to analyze the relationship between Watson and Holmes as well as the meaning of Watson within the story. In a second step I will try to illuminate correlation among the reader, Dr. Watson and the surroundings.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

It seems that gender equality has presented a challenge for all kinds of organizations ¿ but in not other organization, gender has been as central and (as it seems) as difficult to handle as in the military. The military has always been an organization in which social perceptions and constructions of gender have been prevalent ¿ it is one of the last institutions where the monopole of power has throughout rested with men (Gabbert 2007, 17, Seifert/Eifler 1999, 7). It is an organization where hegemonial masculinity and related concepts such as power, violence and hierarchy have been produced, reproduced and become institutionalized as a dominant structuring feature.[.] Up to now, this seems to have changed: many women in several countries are serving in the military now and are not confined to certain positions anymore; they are allowed to serve at arms and in combat and thus face the same requirements as well as the same career prospects as their male comrades. This change is the result of a long-lasting and difficult process which was brought about by several developments; most of all, it reflects overall cultural and societal changes and pressures. Laws and quotas concerning and securing gender equality have been enacted and instances such as equal opportunity commissioners have been established in the military in several countries. But does this really mean that gender equality in the military is really completely achieved and has become an institution In how far has gender equality been institutionalized These questions lead to the central question of this paper: can the ¿mission¿ of the institutionalization of gender equality in the military be regarded as ¿accomplished¿ [.)For which reasons is gender equality established Which factors influence or impede the process of institutionalization How is it organized, how is it represented, and in how far is it really implemented, internalized and realized And in the end: how is the present state of the institutionalization of gender equality to evaluate I argue that the ¿mission¿ of gender equality in the military only can be seen as ¿accomplished¿ if¿BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 36 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, Harvard University, course: Behavioral and Value Investing, language: English, abstract: 1. INTRODUCTIONOn 24 April 2006, the private equity company Blackstone acquired 4.6% of the shares of publicly listed German telecom incumbent Deutsche Telekom (DT) at a share price of ¿14 for a total of ¿2.7bn. According to Blackstone, DT was undervalued when compared to European peers. This paper has three objectives:1) To apply various established value investing valuation techniques to assess whether DT was indeed undervalued at Blackstone¿s entry.2) To explore which operational and share price performance Blackstone might have anticipated for DT in order to reach a typical private equity IRR of 25% over five years.3) To review subsequent events and DT¿s performance since Blackstone¿s entry and to specify what would need to happen to at least recover Blackstone¿s investment.1.1 Company and shareholder overviewDeutsche Telekom is the German telecom incumbent and was Europe¿s largest telecom operator with sales of ¿59.6bn in 2005. The company generated 57% of its sales in Germany, another 22% in other European countries (mainly the United Kingdom) and the remaining 20% in North America. In terms of business areas, mobile communications accounted for 48% of its revenues, broadband/fixed network made up 36% and business customers 15%.DT¿s largest shareholder was the German government which held 15.2% of DT¿s shares directly and controlled another 17.3% via the German state-owned bank Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW). The remaining 63% were held by a fragmented institutional and private investor base.1.2. Transaction detailsBlackstone bought its stake directly from KfW at a 2.6% premium to DT shares¿ trading price of ¿13.65, implying a total market capitalization of ¿58.8bn and an enterprise value of ¿97.4bn. In the fifth largest private equity investment ever observed in Germany, Blackstone agreed to a lock up period of two years to show its commitment as a longterm investor. In return, it received one seat on DT¿s supervisory board and KfW agreed not to sell any further DT shares within one year. 85% of Blackstone¿s total investment was financed with a margin loan provided by Deutsche Bank.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Various nursery media is used to raise these seedlings. The study was aimed at determining the researchers¿ views and opinions on the nursery practices that the farmers employ. The survey was carried out to establish the productivity and types of media used in the nursery industry within Manicaland, Zimbabwe. In this study, the survey was conducted at provincial level within five (5) selected districts of Manicaland Province. In each district, all the existing nurseries were selected. Data was analyzed using the descriptive analysis. Nursery holders were classified as entrepreneurs, farmers, local government owned and non ¿profit making organizations owned. Farmer nurseries were the largest category comprising of 56.4% of the total sampled population. Most of the seedlings were raised in containers with the exception of vegetable seedlings which were raised in seed beds. Nursery media comprising of top soil and compost proved to be most popular amongst nursery owners. Pine media used proved to be least used due to its low water holding capacity and lack of proper extension training on its use.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,3, Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald, language: English, abstract: In the Middle Ages rhetoric played a much more important role than it does nowadays. Replaced by sciences like aesthetics, psychology or stylistics1 in our time rhetoric was of central interest in scholarly life back then. It was not simply reduced to the science of tropes and figures like it is often done nowadays but there was much more to it in the Middle Ages. Based on the rhetorical tradition of the antiquity rhetoric was the art of speech, which already shows that it was a broad subject. It will therefore be of importance to give a general overview of rhetoric in those days and to look at one author in particular to illustrate how rhetoric was used. One of the most important and best known authors of the Middle Ages is Geoffrey Chaucer. That is why he will be considered as a representative of the rhetoricians of his time in this term paper. The following chapters will deal with rhetoric in the Middle Ages in general and with Chaucer as a rhetorician of that time in particular. This term paper will not only summarise what rhetoric was like in those days but, moreover, it will examine the most important features of Chaucer¿s poetical style. Finally a closer look at The Parliament of Fowls, one of Chaucer¿s minor poems, will make clear how Chaucer used rhetorical devices and other language ornaments to make his works aesthetic and to get his message across. While reading Chaucer it has to be kept in mind that his poems were not published as books to be read but were presented to an audience. That is why it will be of interest to examine the way the oral character is created in Chaucer¿s poems.Rhetorical devices were originally used to make a text or speech aesthetic and persuasive and nowadays they are often used as the starting point for interpretations of a text because it is assumed that there must be a connection between the style and the meaning of a poem. This term paper, however, is not supposed to contribute to the understanding of Chaucer¿s The Parliament of Fowls in the first place or even to provide any interpretations of the poem as a whole but it shall give an insight into Chaucer¿s rhetoric and focus on selected examples of this poem. It deals with Chaucer¿s poetical style and not with the deeper meaning of his poem. Nevertheless some rhetorical features cannot be explained without looking at certain possible interpretations of them.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 32 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: '-', Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg (Anglistik), course: Literary Utopias and Dystopias in Britain , language: English, abstract: 1. IntroductionIn this paper, I am going to explore the concept of evolution in H.G Well¿s 'The Time Machine¿. This enormously successful and influential novel, first published in 1895, has been made into two movies in the twentieth century. The novel is generally credited with the concept of time travel using a vehicle which allows the user to explore the fourth dimension by going forward or backwards in time. On another level it is a critical view of the late nineteenth-century Victorian society, and an early masterpiece of dystopian writing. Historically considered, it is one of the first science fiction writings ever published. Wells himself called his work ¿scientific Romance¿ and the majority of reviewers at the time used the term, too. ¿The Time Machine¿ was later seen by literary historians as having laid the path for modern science fiction writing. Moreover, the novel utters a sharp criticism of the decadence of the bourgeoisie and provides a critical perspective on the growing gap between upper and lower class in Wells¿ own time. The main themes and leitmotifs are very ambiguous. The plot illustrates how a typical utopian paradise turns into a dark dystopian vision of a remote future for mankind. In the first part of my paper, the focus lies on the novel¿s structure as well as on the specific literary devices employed. This includes the narrative frame, interesting aspects of the narration and the protagonist, who is simply, yet amply named ¿The Time Traveller¿ and an overview of the extraordinary structures of time and place.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0 (B), Humboldt-University of Berlin (Anglistics/American Studies), course: The linguistic situation in the USA, language: English, abstract: The belief in sex differences has a long tradition. Researches of social scientists have helped to create and confirm this belief and have helped to develop theories which stress differences rather than similarities. Robin Lakoff was one of the first linguists who proposed that women¿s speech style is a powerless style. She introduced the term ¿women¿s language¿ which implies that women and men speak different languages. Lakoff and others have claimed that differences in male and female language have their source in early childhood socialisation. The assertiveness training movement which emerged in the 1970s was first established to help people who have communication problems and was later designed especially for women to solve their alleged problems of speech style and male-female communication. In the 1980s another approach gained popularity. The origins lie in the work of the linguist John Gumperz. The two-cultures approach maintains that communication between women and men is communication across cultures because the reasons for misunderstanding between them are similar to those of ethnic groups. More recent works of Elizabeth Aries and Mary Crawford challenge these approaches and demonstrate that similarities between men and women are far greater than differences. In this paper I want to discuss several approaches to gender differences and try to answer the questions whether there are differences in male-female communication and what the causes are for these differences.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,0, Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald, language: English, abstract: On the threshold of industrialisation many significant changes took place in England throughout the eighteenth century. Trade and economy grew more and more and consequently trade centres like London became metropolises to which many people moved to from rural areas due to the bigger chance to find a job there. The society in such cities was dominated by men and there was no equality of the sexes as women were considered to be inferior and dependent on men. They had to obey their fathers or husbands, who made all decisions for them and they had no own property as everything they had belonged to their husbands1. But there were women who tried to escape the subordinate role they possessed. Expected to be virtuous housewives, mothers and wives, who obey their husbands unconditionally, some women led totally different lives. Instead of marrying, bringing up children and doing the household they worked to earn their living. But whereas many women chose to work as servants or seamstresses, the business of some other young ladies was of a totally different nature ¿ of a disorderly nature. They earned their money by offering sexual services in exchange for money. In other words they worked as prostitutes. Especially London was a city where this sexual trade was very widespread due to the constantly arriving tradesmen and sailors who were willing to pay women to satisfy their needs. But who were these women of pleasure Why did they work as prostitutes and how did they live To answer these questions it is necessary to look at the lives of these women in detail.Their social backgrounds and their education can be considered as the origin of their later work as harlots. As people cannot only be characterised by what they do themselves but by the opinions of the people around them as well, it is important to consider the reactions of society towards prostitutes. And last but not least the living and working conditions of streetwalkers as well as the risks they had to face in their everyday lives are worth consideration. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 1999 in the subject History Europe - Germany - Postwar Period, Cold War, grade: 1 (A), University of Kassel (FB 8), course: The United States in the 1960s, language: English, abstract: It might perhaps be correct to say that never in history has any historical event assembled such great importance in all of its aspects, and been studied in such depth. I believe that is fully understandable, because never before had humankind been so close to the brink of nuclear holocaust. This short statement by Oleg Troyanovsky reveals that the Cuban missile crisis is indeed one of the most studied subjects in U.S. and Cold War history. Ever since the thirteen days in October 1962 there has been a lively discussion about the origins and the management of the crisis. Despite an enormous range of opinions, and an incredible output of books and articles by participants and scholars of the crisis, most of the approaches were limited to studying the events from an American perspective. However, during the last decade the discussion has continued due to the declassification of secret American documents. In fact it gained new speed after they became available for scholars to review. One issue that has been heavily disputed since 1962 is the reason for the Soviet missile deployment to Cuba. Even after more than 35 years, it is unclear why Nikita Khrushchev ordered nuclear missiles to be sent to Cuba. Even President John F. Kennedy and his advisers in the Executive Committee (ExComm) could not agree on the reason for the missile deployment. The official Soviet explanation states that the missiles were sent to defend Fidel Castro¿s revolution and to deter American aggression in Cuba. However, this theory has been vigorously dismissed as facesaving propaganda for the test-of-will theory which states that the Soviets wanted to probe Americäs resolve in Cold War politics.I will show in this paper that Khruschev did not send the missiles to Cuba because he wanted to directly challenge Kennedy, but rather two reasons were responsible for stationing strategic missiles 90 miles off the U.S. coast. After reconsidering the defense-of-Cuba theme it becomes apparent that the Soviets and the Cubans believed that the deployment of troops and finally nuclear missiles was necessary to save Cuba. This threat perception was not known to the United States. Secondly, American nuclear policy and the Soviet perception of the nuclear situation led to the deployment of Medium Range Ballistic Missiles (MRBMs) and Intermediate Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBMs).Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 36 pp. Englisch.

However, the majority of the new labor force faces especially at the beginning of their residence difficulties with the countries` legal working regulations; neither being aware of the actual working conditions in France nor of their individually granted job rights nor of the particularities of the French working culture. This need shall now be addressed by this study.Within the scope of this study, a best practice manual shall be developed for people planning to take up employment in France in the near future. The focus of the work shall be placed on the one hand on the currently existing employment laws in France (Chapter 1) and on the other hand on the impact the national culture exerts on the general work attitudes of French employees (Chapter 2).Additionally, an empirical analysis of the Anti-Discrimination Act, a currently highly controversial topic in France, will be conducted (Chapter 3). At the end, a set of general guidelines will be provided summing up the major findings of the antecedent chapters (Chapter 4).Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 40 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,7, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (Finanzwissenschaften), course: The reform of federalism, language: English, abstract: The term federalism derives from the Latin word ¿foedus¿ and is rendered in the words ¿alliance¿ and ¿treaty¿ or ¿agreement¿. Federalism describes a national form of organization consisting of at least two members, who are joined together by means of a voluntary agreement or treaty into a unitary state having its own national characteristics,1 but without discarding the distinctive national attributes. Through this coalition the individual / federal states surrender their jurisdiction and individual powers to the unitary state. In return, the federal system makes sure that the unitary state and the individual states control and assist each other mutually when fulfilling their obligations.2 Federalism is especially characterized in that assignments, revenues and expenses are distributed on several national levels.3 Furthermore, federalism must safeguard a certain unit from a (foreign) political, economic, military and socially cultural point of view.4Basically, federalism implements an equilibrium between decentralization and centralization.5 Aided by expenses and the division of assignments, revenues and expenditure, an optimal allocation is put from theory into practice.6 In Germany, the 16 federal states (Länder) make up the federal state, the German Federal Republic. Powers to and responsibility for national assignments in the government and governmental management, legislation and the administration of justice is divided between the federal state and the individual states. The German constitution ensures that in addition to this vertical division between the federal and the individual states¿ authorities, a horizontal division of powers exists between the legislative, executive and judicial branch, thereby forming the basis of a double division of powers.7Current discussions concerning the German federal reform, more precisely defined the so-called ¿Kommission von Bundestag und Bundesrat zurModernisierung der bundesstaatlichen Ordnung¿8 are mainly centred on the reorganization of the assignments of the federal and the individual states. In the course of these discussions special attention is paid to the reorganization within the areas of powers and responsibility of both levels, especially regarding education, representation of EU-countries, a readjustment of the extent of the laws, which the federal state is obliged to approve, and the equalization of tax rates between the federal states.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1.2, Fontys University of Applied Sciences Venlo, language: English, abstract: Globalization presents risk and opportunities today and in the future. Transnational Organizations (TNOs) were the beneficiaries of the globalization; they expanded their activities aboard, created an international mentality and adapted their strategies for substantial growths. Many domestic markets of TNOs are already saturated and through the process of expanding abroad TNOs have been looking for new markets with a high growth potential. Nowadays, China represents a promising target for nearly every TNO. However, many TNOs fail to enter the Chinese market successfully or are not able to capitalize their potential. The purpose of this report is to conclude why China is attractive for TNOs, what the specific risks and challenges are, when operating in the Chinese market and on which aspects a TNO should focus when entering China. In order to answer these questions, the present economic situation, including the influences by the economic crisis, is analysed to demonstrate the relevance of the Chinese market. The current situation of TNOs in China is explored to provide an understanding of the different strategies to cope with the various challenges and risks in China. As a result an outline of the key success factors and most relevant strategic decision will give advice for the implementation of an efficient strategy.Transnational organizations have to target the Chinese market in order to remain competitive in the process of globalization. Poor infrastructures, different cultural behavior, copyright violations, fierce competition or concerns on the legal systems are risks that TNOs have to face in China. Therefore, transnational organizations need to implement efficient strategies in order to exploit their full potential in the Chinese market.Entering the Chinese market can be done by four major entry modes: Exporting, Licensing (Franchising), Joint Ventures or Foreign Direct Investment. It can be concluded that TNOs have to focus on an efficient innovation strategy and incorporate local responsiveness in their culture in order to adapt their company to the market environment of China. One global strategy for all countries, as in the past, is not possible anymore. TNOs have to implement a ¿Think Global ¿ Act Local¿ strategy. The prospects for the Chinese economy are still promising and will continue to offer TNOs enormous competitive advantages.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 36 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, Free University of Berlin, language: English, abstract: Nowadays English has become the most important source of loanwords in Japanese by far. About 95% of all gairaigo loanwords (¿words coming from abroad¿, i.e. words originating from European languages) derived from the English language and it is estimated that about5-10% of the Japanese lexicon are of English origin today (Stanlaw, 2004, p.1 + p.13). The status of the English language is high in Japan. It has become a marker of high education and openness to other (Western) cultures. Nearly every Japanese pupil is taught English for at least six years at school (from seventh to twelfth grade), but there is the possibility for private schools to start teaching eikaiwa (English conversation) from third grade on. English classes are obligatory for university students of all subjects, although it should be mentioned that these classes are usually overcrowded (often more than one hundred students) and that they take place only once a week for 90 minutes. A TOEFL test in 1997/98 among 26 Asian na-tions ranked Japan 25th and last together with North Korea (McKenzie, 2008, p 272). The Japanese government made heavy efforts to improve English teaching within the last decade. It was tried to motivate more Japanese pupils to spend a year abroad, only 1,000 Japanese pupils took chance of this opportunity in 2003, although there would have been provided money for 10,000 exchange students. Besides this, there are now more assistant language teachers - mainly from the inner circle of English speaking countries, but also, to a much smaller extent, from former British colonies - at Japanese schools to improve the eikaiwa lessons. The common eigo (English) lessons are still held by Japanese teachers and are strongly text and Grammar based, usually a translation into Japanese is given.Although the Western world was the model for the Japanese modernisation in the 19th and 20th century and English was without any doubt the means of communication with the West, the vast majority of the Japanese population has never become fluent English speakers.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 32 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 1,7, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Institute for Public Economics), course: Environmental and Resource Economics, language: English, abstract: This paper analyses whether nuclear power is needed in Germany. To reach the aims of the Kyoto Protocol, Germany has to reduce the CO2 emissions. In spite of different results in the presented studies, this paper shows that nuclear power can help in reducing the climate problem in the short run. In addition to reach the aims of the Kyoto Protocol, competitive prices of nuclear power have also to be fulfilled. In the second part of this paper, the costs of nuclear power are discussed. Additionally, external costs and risks of nuclear power are discussed as well. This paper reveals that high uncertainties exist about the risk assessment of nuclear power and the availability of suitable data in this context is limited. Overall, the low CO2 emission of nuclear power and the risk of high external costs result in the finding that nuclear power can be an expensive energy source for solving the global warming problem.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 32 pp. Englisch.

ConclusionThe first chapter examines the intrinsic problem areas of CSR such as the differences between individual and collective responsibility; the fundamental conflict between profit and moral; and the tension between universal ethical norms, national or international legislation and entrepreneurial freedom. In the last two subchapters the challenges and chances of globalization are illustrated. The second chapter focuses on the business perspective on CSR. The aim of this part is to reconcile the conflicts described in the first chapter in ways that can create mutual benefits for both the society and companies. At first, practical problems of planning, implementing and evaluating CSR activities are discussed. Starting from there, a strategic concept of CSR is developed that understands ethical and philanthropic responsibilities as firm and context specific competitive advantages. Management tools are presented that help to localize and address ESG issues with beneficial potential for society and business alike. Concluding, the activities of Nestlé in India illustrate a good practice example for a CSR strategy that aligns social communal engagement and profitability.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 56 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,3, Jacobs University Bremen gGmbH (School of Engineering and Science), course: International Logistics, language: English, abstract: Lufthansa Technik (LHT) is a provider of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services for aircraft. While LHT has traditionally performed the MRO services in-house, the subcontracted operations business is gaining momentum. With about 90,000 outsourced MRO purchase orders (POs) per year, the process becomes increasingly complex. In the past, the company set the objective of achieving an average turnaround time (TAT) of five shop calendar days (SCD) for internal repair operations. One of the main goals of LHT is to achieve an average TAT of fifteen SCD for the subcontracted MRO operations, between the monitoring points ¿Creation PO Requisition¿ (i.e.: TS 29) and ¿Receive Unit Transaction¿ (i.e.: TS 69). The current TAT is significantly higher, with substantial process variability. The repair subcontracting value-chain consists of several processes, which fall under different areas of responsibility. Due to the stochastic nature of the series of processes and becausemany variables influence the overall performance of the system, a simulation study needs to be conducted. The present thesis aims to develop an analytical input model for a simulation study in technical procurement.Practical relevancy of the research problemThe building of the analytical input model and subsequent simulation model is a substantialmilestone towards the process optimization in the subcontracted MRO operations business. The modeling of processes as an M/M/1 queuing system is the first step needed in order toi) Simulate the processes and leverage optimization methods from the field of Production Logistics;ii) Identify whether the application of queuing theory elements for processdescription and analysis within technical procurement would aid in improving the processes.Theoretical relevancy of the research problemThe thesis aims at applying already existing elements from queuing theory and statistics to a relatively new field ¿ technical procurement, as to bring a contribution to the queuing science, an interface between queuing theory and practice.[.]Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 48 pp. Englisch.
