Those sanctions mostly originate from external factors that pose threats to international, regional or domestic security. Violations of international law or aggressive foreign policy behavior also represent causes to enforce sanctions as a form of protest. Economic sanctions, thus, either target a national economy as a whole and/or certain individuals, enterprises and/or institutions in order to weaken economic or political positions. Establishing trade embargos, cutting financial aid or seizing foreign assets are named as examples. This approach is often used as a non-violent means in modern foreign policy. The EU as a political union established norms to meet common foreign policy decisions in which economic sanctions are regularly enforced. Being ranked as the second most free country in Latin America, Chile has proven to have successfully reconsolidated democratic tradition after a nearly 20-year dictatorial regime under General Augusto Pinochet between 1973 and 1990. In view of recent political events in the country, it results of vital importance to go back to the late 1980s. In this vein, the 1988 presidential plebiscite does not only represent a pivotal event for the 20th century but stands for a turning point in Chilean modern history, since it put an end to 17 years of dictatorial rule and set a breakthrough democracy. It is worth highlighting that despite such development, the transition to democracy did not occur without difficulties. Legacies dating back from Pinochet¿s era indeed continue to shape political debate until the present day. The struggle of South Sudan for self-determination has a history longer than any other struggle in Africa. The struggle has roots in Sudan's pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial political events. Despite these roots, South Sudan sought secession due to fear of Northern domination and internal colonisation in post-independence Sudan and exclusion of Southerners from crucial constitutional discussions on Sudan's future based on the argument that the southerners did not have organised political parties. In seeking peace, South Sudan voted in the 2011 referendum to support internal self-determination by seceding from Sudan. Internal self-determination makes peacebuilding initiatives legitimate and sustainable. However, South Sudan experienced incidences of conflict after seceding from the North. Most of his poems were published posthumously. In the first part of the term paper, some characteristics of English poetry from the Great War will be identified. At that time, the so-called Georgian movement was distinguished. Consequently, in the second part the main aspects of this movement will be clarified, and it will be shown how Owen was influenced by the Georgians. In the third part, some details about Wilfred Owen and his short but excellent poetic career will be given. Poems of Wilfred Owen will be analysed regarding how he conveys the harsh reality of war in his poems, and his attitude towards war. Owen was one of the persons who were diagnosed with the so called ¿shell shock¿. Therefore, his mental illness and being part of the war had a significant impact on his poems. Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967), another well-known English war poet, had a huge influence on the writings of Owen, too. They met at hospital to recover from shell shock.
