Title page vignette, head-piece and decorated initial letter by Edward Bawden, coloured in green and pink. With 31 sheets of pattern papers printed at The Curwen Press, 10 of which are produced from wood engravings. Each sheet is folded twice and uncut to the folded edge, as issued. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with bumping to the spine tips and corners and rubbing to the black printed design at the edges. The contents, with a little offsetting to the endpapers and the occasional finger mark to the margins of the introduction, are otherwise fine, bright and fresh throughout. Issued in an edition of 145 copies for sale in the UK, from which this example is numbered 49. There was also an edition of 75 copies issued by Random House for sale in America. With numerous color and black-and-white illustrations, tip-ins, and specimens, some fold-out. Printer and typographer Bernard Newdigate (1869-1944) positively gushes over the first volume in his "Book Production Notes" for The London Mercury: "The first number of The Fleuron is a brilliant piece of book-production. The book itself is a sumptuous production of the Curwen Press and shows, both in its general appearance and in nearly every detail, the care and skill and good taste which have conspired to the splendid achievement" (quoted by Ruari McLean in "The Most Underrated of Typographers," Matrix 6, pp. 172-3). "The Fleuron was an occasional journal of the arts of the book, in hardback form; it was a sumptuous publication which included the writings of many contemporary scholars as well as original work by artists, and specially composed type specimens of many types as they appeared. It had sprung from conversations between [Stanley] Morison and Oliver Simon, designer at the Curwen Press" (Sebastian Carter, in "Stanley Morison and Jan van Krimpen," Matrix 8, p. 117). Volume 5 with the booklabel of Charles Antin, proprietor of the Serendipity Press, on rear pastedown; prior owner signature on vol. 6 pastedown. Contents generally very good to near fine. Most condition issues are with the covers: some wear to head and/or foot of spine of all volumes except vol. 3 (most heavily in vol. 5); vols. 1 and 5 rear hinge has short or partial split; vol. 2 has horizontal inch-length heavy crease along top of both boards and one-inch split at the hinge; light cover edge wear to vols. 1, 2 and 4; some light soiling to covers, except vol. 5, which is heavily soiled; spines to vols. 2 and 4 a bit faded. Pastedowns and first and last few leaves foxed. Dustjackets show some chipping; vol. 1 spine jacket panel partially repaired.…

FIRST EDITION, 99/120 COPIES, Calendar section at front with border and decorations printed in yellow, a couple of illustrations from books reviewed in section at rear, pp. 85, [15, ads], crown 8vo, original quarter brown buckram with off-white boards, attractive border and decorations to upper board with a small amount of colour-printing, backstrip lettered in gilt, slightly toned at board-edges wirth a couple of faint marks to the blank lower board, edge untrimmed, free endpapers very faintly toned, faint trace of label removal to front pastedown, very good. An attractively designed annual, this copy notable for Herbert Read's savaging of Lawrence's 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom' and the hype surrounding it: as a piece of book-design he finds it perverse, 'a monstrous exhibition of all that a book should not be', and the record of a mind 'obscured by divided aims' and too full of 'doubts and dissemblings' to qualify as an 'epic hero', being 'an Oxford graduate with a civilian and supercilious lack of the sense of discipline' required - only representative insofar as he is 'a lame duck in an age of lame ducks'. The crux of the matter is perhaps in Read's insistence that 'the Palestine Campaign was merely the romantic fringe of the war', and that in 'France and Belgium men of infinitely finer quality [.] were enduring day after day [.] the dull and dispiriting agony of trench warfare' - out of which 'horror' he allows, 'no one will be fool enough [.] to make an epic story'. The issue is otherwise interesting for the presence of contemporary reviews of such works as John Nash's 'Poisonous Plants' and the Golden Cockerel Press edition of 'Troilus and Criseyde' with Gill's illustrations.…
