Quarto folding type-specimen booklet, 12 pp. A particularly attractive piece of Curwen Press printing and an important primary document for the typographic resources of one of Britain's most influential twentieth-century printing houses. The decorative black and turquoise wrapper incorporates repeated floral and ornamental borders around the central title panel, while the contents demonstrate a wide range of display faces including Fat Face, Fry's Ornamented, Figgins Shaded, Bodoni, Albertus, Maximilian, Orplid, Gill Sans, Perpetua and Times, together with extensive selections of Typefounders and Monotype borders, printer's flowers, swelled rules and vignettes. The final page is explicitly dated "The Curwen Press · 1957." Such specimen books reveal the practical design vocabulary available to Curwen's compositors and designers during the period in which the Press was closely associated with leading British artists and illustrators including Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious, John Piper, Paul and John Nash, Barnett Freedman, Graham Sutherland and Edward Ardizzone. An important and attractive contemporary survey of the Curwen Press's pioneering involvement with artist-drawn lithography between 1920 and 1950, opening with an essay, "Auto-Lithography at Plaistow", which traces Harold Curwen's early collaboration with Claud Lovat Fraser, the revival of direct artist involvement in commercial lithography, and the subsequent flowering of work at Plaistow under Harold Curwen and Oliver Simon. The catalogue lists 29 exhibits by or involving many of the leading figures of twentieth-century British illustration and printmaking, including Barnett Freedman, John Piper, Edward Ardizzone, Claud Lovat Fraser, Edward Wadsworth, Graham Sutherland, Edward Bawden, John Nash, Ben Nicholson, Paul Nash, John Hitchens, Eric Ravilious and John Banting, with work commissioned for London Transport, the Limited Editions Club, Penguin Books, B. I may perhaps remind you that the criteria by which judgment is made are | 1. TYPOGRAPHICAL DESIGN | 2. PAPER | 3. BINDING | 4. GENERAL IMPRESSION | 5. RELATION TO PRICE'. A 'condition of entry' is that 'one copy of any book selected is presented to the Club's file, and another copy lent for exhibition in America'.
