A rare Ge'ez manuscript on vellum, comprising both the Life of St Za-Mika'el Aragawi and the Vision of Abba Barok. - Composed in the 16th century, the Life of St Aragawi de…tails the works of the most famous of the Nine Saints who were instrumental in the development and consolidation of Christianity in Ethiopia during the 6th century. Following this, the Vision of Abba Barok describes the three visionary dreams of the monk Barok, in which God ordered the monk, living in chastity (and perhaps castrated), to return to his normal life to marry and have children, which was duly undertaken. One similar manuscript copy of the Life of St Aragawi can be found at the University of Toronto's Gunda Gunde, also dated to the 18th century (cf. Toronto GG-020). While saints' lives and miracle tales are popular subjects for Ge'ez manuscripts, neither of these two stories are commonly found. - Dampstain to final 10 ff. of manuscript, with some resulting damage to vellum; the usual toning and rippling to vellum. - 1) With the ownership mark of Gabra Sellasé. 2) Sam Fogg 2157.

Opening with a prayer to the Virgin Mary, this manuscript of Psalms is written in Ge'ez, the liturgical language of the Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox Churches which has its roots in ancient Christian tradition in North Africa. After the prayer for the Virgin, the manuscript continues with the text of the Christian psalms in Ge'ez, and remains in verse throughout. - The Ge'ez manuscript tradition is one of the oldest in the Christian world. With Christianity introduced to the region in the 4th century, the earliest attested Ge'ez Gospels are dated (with some debate) to the 6th century; it is in Ge'ez that the tradition of writing Christian holy books by hand has persisted the furthest into the modern age, long after it had been abandoned by most of the Christian world. - Leaves somewhat toned, light soiling, a few later marginal notes; in good condition. With six later full-page miniatures. Full red-brown leather, elaborately ruled in blind, with central patterned cross at the center. A monumental, uncommonly substantial Ge'ez ma…nuscript of the Miracles of Mary. This pulpit-sized work comprises no fewer than 188 miracle stories, a number reached by less than one percent of extant Tä'ammerä Maryam manuscripts (we gratefully acknowledge the help of Professor Wendy Belcher of Princeton University in cataloguing this item). Still in an early or even original binding, it features six finely painted full-page illustrations in the Second Gondarene style of the mid-18th century, though in fact they form a more recent 20th century addition. These miniatures were apparently commissioned by a wealthy husband and wife who are seen in the first painting, both prostrated below an image of the Holy Trinity flanked by the symbols of the Evangelists. The manuscript itself records the names of two devout sponsors: a woman named Walatta Takla Haymanot and a man, likely her husband, named Gabrar Kidane Mariam. - The "Miracles of Mary" is a deeply important and particularly revered text in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church; it became part of the ancient Ge'ez manuscript tradition in the 14th century, when the collection of Marian miracle stories was translated into Ge'ez, the liturgical language of Ethiopia and Eritrea. A similar copy to this one is held by the British Royal Collection Trust. - The six illustrations are quite skillfully executed, bright and vivid, showing familiar scenes: the Archangel Michael stands triumphant over a cowering Satan, Saint George slays the dragon. The final three show the Madonna and Child, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection, in which Jesus holds a staff with the colours of the Ethiopian flag, while at his feet are Adam and Eve, and the sleeping Roman soldiers guarding his tomb; as usual, he is only shown in profile. - The sponsors are placed visually at the head of the manuscript, but a third figure also has an association with this text, which mentions the name Abune Gabre Medhin. 'Abune' is the honorific term translated as 'Church Father' or 'Patriarch', and could refer to a previous owner or the scribe who produced this large and beautiful work. - Some soiling, especially to the first section of the text; a few later marginal notes, and natural faults in the vellum, some carefully stitched by a contemporary hand.
