In den WarenkorbFolio (264 x 280 mm). 155 ff. Manuscript on vellum, in numbered gatherings of various sizes with frequent single folios stitched into gatherings. 2 columns, 16 and 15 lines respectively, written in black ink in two different hands in elegant gwelh script, with rubrics; original pricking and ruling visible throughout. With 92 pai…ntings, of which 82 full-page. Bound between wooden boards fully covered, including spine, in incised brown morocco. Stored within a handsome black hald-morocco clamshell case with gilt title to spine and upper cover. An especially fine Second Gondarine manuscript of two major Ethiopian hagiographical texts, preserved with an exceptional cycle of ninety-two paintings and distinguished by provenance from the library of Emperor Tewodros II. This copy matters not only for the scale of its illumination, but also for the unusually close documentation of its later history, publication, and disappearance from view. - The codex brings together the Life of Mäba'a S'eyon and the Acts of Gäbrä Krestos, the latter being the Ethiopian version of the life of St. Alexis. Copied in two hands but conceived as a single campaign of production, it preserves a coherent decorative programme throughout, with all paintings executed in the same accomplished Late or Second Gondarine style. - Mäba'a S'eyon, active in the reign of Zär'a Ya'eqob, was remembered as the institutor of the Feast of the Crucifixion and as an evangeliser of the Gafat. The companion text on Gäbrä Krestos localises the saint's career in Constantinople and Armenia, giving the Ethiopian redaction a markedly distinct shape within the wider eastern and western Alexis traditions. - The manuscript's paintings, framed within broad coloured borders and often composed as multi-scene narratives without internal division, form a monumental visual cycle of the lives and miracles of both saints. Executed in the palette and figural idiom associated with the patronage of Empress Mentewwab and Iyasu II, they place the codex squarely within the high culture of eighteenth-century Gondarene book production. - Internal evidence preserves traces of changing ownership in the erased and rewritten invocations, where the name 'Täklä Haymanot' was inserted over an earlier reading, while at fol. 87r the original name 'Agnat'eyos' survives together with the name of the scribe, Mekha Giyorgis. The manuscript was later in the library of Tewodros II, was taken after the Battle of Magdala in 1868, and entered the celebrated collection of Lady Meux, for whom E. A. Wallis Budge published the text in 1898 with an English translation and colour plates. - Long considered lost by scholarship, the codex represents a defining survival of Ethiopian manuscript painting and hagiography, uniting imperial, scholarly, and collecting histories in a single object. - In excellent condition, with no sign of significant damage. Minor traces of use and age only; original pricking and ruling visible throughout. - 1) Original owner named in erased invocations, with the name of his wife erased and left blank. - 2) Täklä Haymanot, whose name was later inserted in invocations for blessing over the earlier erasures. - 3) Library of Emperor Tewodros II (reigned 1855-68), presumably removed from a church in Gondar for his planned church in Magdala. - 4) A British officer, after the Battle of Magdala in 1868. - 5) Lady Meux, Theobald Park, purchased from Quaritch in 1897. - 6) Manly Palmer Hall (1901-90), purchased for the library of the Philosophical Research Society, Los Angeles (dispersed ca. 1996). - 7) Sam Fogg Rare Books, Catalogue 18: Manuscripts of the Christian East (London, 1996), no. 65, with cover illustration. - 8) European private collection. - E. In den Warenkorb12mo (73 x 92 mm). 159 ff. Ge'ez manuscript on vellum. With 5 full-page miniatures, decorations to text opposite. Bound between the original dark wooden boards. Stored in a custom protective folding case. A rare medieval prayerbook from fifteenth-century Ethiopia, still with its original boards. Part of a small group of manuscri…pts produced around this time, whose most famous examples are in the British Library and the Berlin Staatsbibliothek, it is intended for private devotion and protection. The fine miniatures, depicting Ethiopian saints, place the grandeur of one of the world's most venerable Christian traditions on a personal scale. - The volume begins with a magical prayer against the Evil Eye: "You, O eye, come forth by the black and the red of Joseph as he came forth from evil!" The subsequent material are prayers to the Blessed Virgin, keyed to events in her life, and interspersed with the portraits of Ethiopian saints, including Abba Kiros, Yeshaq, and S'éwa Läs'edq. There are two further magical charms, against serpents and for healing. - The small, portable size reinforces the characteristic of this volume as a personal item, concentrating the majesty and protection of divine power in the hands of the devotee. With prayers attuned to the dangers and challenges of life, it offers a focus of help and consolation, while the portraits of holy men place centuries of Ethiopian Christian tradition behind the volume. - The Ethiopian Orthodox Church is one of the oldest Christian denominations in the world, dating back to the Christianisation of the Kingdom of Aksum in 330 CE. Its venerable history has given it a unique tradition of theology, saints and worship, as well as an incredibly rich vein of devotional art. - From the beginnings of the era of colonialism, doctrinal differences between Ethiopian Orthodoxy and western Christianity played a role in the conflicts with the European imperial powers, with the Portuguese in the sixteenth century being the first to try and fail to bring the ancient African kingdom under their dominion. - Extremely rare: Ethiopian manuscripts of this age, particularly ones this fine, appear very seldomly on the private market, while similar examples are among the treasures of the British Library and the Berlin Staatsbibliothek. - A jewel, placing the protection and beauty of centuries of tradition in the palm of the hand. - Boards somewhat worn with minor worm damage. Edges browned, leaves warped at rear. Soiling to margins, some marginal notations faded but main text overall clean and clear. - 1) Original owner's name erased from the invocations for blessing throughout. - 2) Purchased before 1974 in Addis Ababa. - 3) Sam Fogg, London, MS 6745. - 4) European private collection. - Cf. British Library, Or 13156; Berlin, Staatsbibliothek, Or Oct 59. Sam Fogg, Ethiopian Art, 12th-18th Century (2009), no. 29.

In den Warenkorb8vo (100 x 165 mm). 92 ff. Ge'ez manuscript on vellum. Black script with important names, phrases, and titles picked out in red; some punctuation picked out in red. With a few section titles decorated with red and black designs, including two illustrated with small figures. Contemporary full leather over wood boards, stamped in…blind. Opening with a prayer to the Virgin Mary, this manuscript of Psalms is written in Ge'ez, the liturgical language of the Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox Churches which has its roots in ancient Christian tradition in North Africa. After the prayer for the Virgin, the manuscript continues with the text of the Christian psalms in Ge'ez, and remains in verse throughout. - The Ge'ez manuscript tradition is one of the oldest in the Christian world. With Christianity introduced to the region in the 4th century, the earliest attested Ge'ez Gospels are dated (with some debate) to the 6th century; it is in Ge'ez that the tradition of writing Christian holy books by hand has persisted the furthest into the modern age, long after it had been abandoned by most of the Christian world. - Leaves somewhat toned, light soiling, a few later marginal notes; in good condition. Two portions of the text at the very beginning and very end of this manuscript have been gently scrubbed away by an early owner; possibly these sections referred to the original owner and sponsor of the manuscript.

In den Warenkorb2 hand scrolls. 390 x 45 mm, 680 x 45 mm (two sections of vellum sewn together neatly with vellum thread). Ge'ez manuscripts on vellum. Black script with section titles in red. With abstract designs in red and black, an illustration of the cross, and an illustration of a staring figure. Together with tin scroll tube, decorated i…n geometric patterns, roughly 60 x 30 mm. Ge'ez healing scrolls of a kind often commissioned for both Christian and Muslim women, traditionally written using a combination of words (often invocations of saints) and images, both abstract and of figures, especially figures with staring eyes. In 19th and 20th century examples these scrolls often begin with a prayer for St Susenyos, who offers protection against the malevolent Werzeleya, quote extracts from the Gospels, and may even invoke the aid of Alexander the Great. - Medical scrolls are an ancient tradition in the Horn of Africa and especially associated with Amhara and Tigray communities in Ethiopia, where (along with neighbouring Eritrea) Ge'ez has been a liturgical language among Orthodox Christians for millennia. Though, as this implies, Ge'ez healing scrolls were a Christian practice, Ge'ez healing scrolls have been recorded for the use of Muslim women as well: rather than remaining a staunchly Christian-only practice, they were incorporated by whole communities in which these scrolls long had a role in protecting the welfare of individuals and households. - An entire house could be protected by one very long scroll, but shorter scrolls like these would be used by an individual seeking a cure from an ailment, and carried with the patient. As the recipients were often women, it is not uncommon to find scrolls dedicated to curing illnesses of pregnancy or menstrual cramps, but others may be less specific, and comprise a series of prayers and liturgical texts for the health of the soul. - On one of our two scrolls, the scribe has left a blank space in the midst of the opening lines which introduce each new section or prayer, perhaps leaving room for a practitioner to write in a preferred invocation, name of the recipient, or other custom details. - A few small stains, well-preserved.
