These handguns were also available in fancy engraved versions. There are 165 distinct models/versions depicted in this volume including some that are quite rare. This important book embodies the first in-depth study ever undertaken of the enigmatic Fallschirmjagergewehr 42 (FG42) - certainly the most audacious small arm to come out of World War II. The FG42 was a Luftwaffe development. Plans for its introduction as a specialised weapon for Paratroop use were laid in 1942 after Operation Merkur, the 1941 battle for the island of Crete, had initially turned into a debacle or the outgunned German airborne troops who landed there. The elitist nature of the FG42 denied it a normal path of development through Army Ordnance channels and in consequence the FG42 was dogged with by a virtually constant series of modifications throughout its brief span of existence. Far from the two or three basic types of FG42 normally referred to therefore, the series actually consisted of an estimated twenty different variations. Numerous features of the ArmaLite Ar-18 were simply appropriated in the early 1970s for use in the pilot model of the 4.85mm bullpup "Enfield Weapon System" (EWS). In 1985 the still-unperfected 5.56mm SA80weapon system was adopted as the L85A1 Light Support Weapon (LSW), as modifications and trials continued. In 1988 H & K was awarded a controversial 92M British Pound contract to retrofit the SA80 to the A2 version - in Germany. The controversies continue. An excellent and comprehensive study. An in-depth history of the small arms made by the Sterling Company of Dagenham, Essex, Enland, from 1940 until Sterling was purchased by British Aerospace in 1989 and closed. The Lanchester and the Patchett Machine Carbine were both developed at Sterling Engineering Co. Ltd during World War II. With the appearance of the earliest Patchett Prototypes the military began testing them in ever more rigorous trials, wherein the Patchett kept proving its merits. This led to limited UK adoption of the MkII Patchett as the L2A1 in 1953, and the "first Sterling", the MkIII, as the L22 IN 1955. Then came Sterling's "Crown Jewel", the superb Mk4, adopted as the general-issue UK "Gun, Sub-Machine, L2A3" in September, 1955. Manufactured briefly but intensively by ROF Fazakerley (1955-1959) and by Sterling for over 30 years, nearly 400,000 were made. Unlike wraparound bolt designs like the UZI, the Sterling was capable of being truly silenced with standard 9mm ball ammunition (as opposed to being merely "suppressed"). The excellent silenced Sterling-Patchett Mk5, adopted as the UK L34A1 in 1967, is the only Sterling remaining in British Service. At the same time, the sport of one-handed target shooting was very popular. In January, 1932, amidst the darkest days of depression and general economic decline, the Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Companyu introduced their hand-fitted, premium-grade National Match Government Model pistol. These fine arms were eminently suitable for match shooting, but they carried a sticker price of $40 in the days when a brand-new commercial Government Model retailed for about $22. Not surprisingly, the prewar National Match model was originally produced in small numbers, and was in fact only briefly produced. Surprisingly, the prewar National Match .45 Government model may be rarer, in terms of the numbers produced, than the ultra-rare Colt .44 Walker, of which only 1,000 military and 100 civilian examples were ever made. Nevertheless, no finer semi-automatic handgun than the prewar Colt National Match ever left the factory, and anyone who owns one of these American Beauties holds a national treasure in his hand. Both the Book and the Dust Jacket are in Fine condition, showing only the lightest use. An opportunity to own a wonderful copy of a scarce book at a reasonable price.
