Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The main theme of the volume is the exploration and identification of the fundamental principles involved in constructing and understanding the microstructures found within etymological references. The authors offer an in-depth examination of designing etymological dictionaries, focusing on the principles behind constructing their microstructures. It begins by exploring the evolution of lexicographic sources and their role in societal knowledge organization. The work then delves into the methodology of building dictionary entries, discussing the integration of traditional and cognitivesynergetic principles to better capture the linguistic nuances of words. Through comprehensive analysis and detailed examples, this volume provides a profound understanding of how etymological information is systematically organized and presented.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The study, based on the principles of genre analysis, speech act theory applied to legal discourse and thick description of legal texts, was carried out on a corpus of ninety EU regulations on subjects (e.g. customs union, competition rules) that fall under the exclusive competence of the European Union according to the principle of conferral. The findings shed light on a new approach to hybridity in EU secondary legislation. EU regulations, which are hybrid legal texts, are inevitably influenced by the legal framework from which they originate and by the political and historical reasons that led the founding fathers of the former European Community to address the problem of the so-called 'democratic deficit' also from a textual point of view, and not only by means of economic and political strategies. The textual peculiarity of EU regulation is particularly significant when combined with the contractual nature of EU law. Thus, the results of this study support the hypothesis according to which EU regulations are an instrument created to regulate social behaviour and to address the phenomenon of the 'democratic deficit' from a textual perspective.; Dissertationsschrift.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Adel den Hartog shows how complex the food choices of humans have been for millenia. Those who wonder why we eat what we eat, will find out practicalities, such as availability of products, transportation and costs, but also physiological, cultural, geological, and psychological factors matter. Den Hartog points out the importance of access to food for individuals and groups, and the influence of their socio-economical position. Can someone be convinced to eat something that they perceive as inedible This book gives many examples of our limited flexibility, whether caused by an intolerance for genetical reasons, or because we simply did not know the food and want to keep it that way. Food habits are slow to respond to interventions, but these days, a meatless meal is no longer a sign of poverty. The book will attract the culturally interested reader. It can be used as a handbook for those who want to understand the background of our eating habits. The knowledge in this book can be used for a large range of interventions when it comes to food and life style.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The meaning of being Muslim has undergone enormous changes in the aftermath of the bombings in New York in 2001. The initial reaction of Western media outlets was to portray Muslims as a global threat. In social, cultural and political contexts, Muslims were thought to be unable to fit into Western societies. For example, in a major survey, over half of Australians preferred that their relatives not marry into a Muslim family. This book examines the attitudes, perceptions and knowledge of young Muslim and Western students towards one another in German, Australian and New Zealand educational institutions. It also addresses the views, pressures, unconscious biases, presumptions and expectations, social, cultural and religious influences that drive the relationship between the two communities.

The book's twenty interviews are organized into five parts: Values and Goals, Development, Media, Student Life and Institutions, and Putting Learning into Practice--Engineering Education. While our team of interviewees consists largely of HGSE professors and administrators, it also includes world-renowned professors and deans from other Harvard schools, as well as an outstanding representative of global engineering education transformation. Each chapter consists of an interviewee profile, editors' note, the interview dialogue itself, references, and notes, so that our dear readers can experience the impact of the interviewees' ideas and reliably trace their sources. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - All creative work operates under constraints. Yet, despite an overall increase in attention over the past decade, the matter of constraints has received much less attention than has creativity, in general. This book represents an effort by the editors to integrate diverse perspectives on constraints in creativity from 22 researchers, who aim to define constraints, uncover their structure, delineate the conditions under which they facilitate or inhibit creativity, and outline how an understanding of the role of constraints in creative thinking can inform our understanding of the nature of creativity itself. Constraints in Creativity provides educators, managers, creativity researchers, and anyone looking to improve their own creative skills with theoretical and practical insights into the role of constraints in the creative process. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Fredrika Bremer (1801-1865) reached out to the world beyond her native Sweden. Her promotion of women's emancipation was celebrated and pursued by Sophie Adlersparre (1823-1895), Rosalie Olivecrona (1823-1898), and Alma Åkermark (1853-1933). From dreams to projects involving collaboration with Britain, France, and Germany, in translation, literature, and periodical editing, this book unearths exciting transnational connections that contributed to the awakening of the Nordic feminist movement. Shedding light on the circulation of liberal ideas, Marxist theory, and the Nordic debate, the three chapters of the book focus on cultural variation, constructive conflicts, mutual (mis)understandings, and class issues.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A 17th-century French haberdasher invented the Black Mass. An 18th-century English Cabinet Minister administered the Eucharist to a baboon. High-ranking Catholic authorities in the 19th century believed that Satan appeared in Masonic lodges in the shape of a crocodile and played the piano there. A well-known scientist from the 20th century established a cult of the Antichrist and exploded in a laboratory experiment. Three Italian girls in 2000 sacrificed a nun to the Devil. A Black Metal band honored Satan in Krakow, Poland, in 2004 by exhibiting on stage 120 decapitated sheep heads. Some of these stories, as absurd as they might sound, were real. Others, which might appear to be equally well reported, are false. But even false stories have generated real societal reactions. For the first time, Massimo Introvigne proposes a general social history of Satanism and anti-Satanism, from the French Court of Louis XIV to the Satanic scares of the late 20th century, satanic themes in Black Metal music, the Church of Satan, and beyond.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This book emerges at a time when critical race studies, postcolonial thought, and decolonial theory are under enormous pressure as part of a global conservative backlash. However, this is also an exciting moment, where new horizons of knowledge appear and new epistemic practices (e.g. symmetry, collaboration, undisciplining) gain traction. Through our critical engagements with structural, relational, and personal aspects of knowing and unknowing we work towards a greater multiplicity of knowledges and practices. Calling into question the asymmetrical global economy of knowledge and its uneven division of intellectual labour, our interdisciplinary volume explores what a decolonial horizon could entail for African Studies at the crossroads. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Why Sesostris Why does the classical antiquity tell stories about this Egyptian hero king of the second millennium BC On which basis The contributions of this conference volume try to systematically answer the question how these narratives come into being and grow. It is not a single historical king Sesostris. Rather the literary tradition of two millennia augments the story with the later Sheshonq kings, makes Sesostris the international hero of demotic narratives and finally leads to the Greek Sesonchosis Romance which itself is widely received. All this takes place in an international cultural context. All dies geschieht in einem internationalen kulturellen Rahmen.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Re-envisioning Theodore is the first comprehensive study of Theodore of Mopsuestia's biblical interpretation in his Catechetical Homilies. It challenges the common yet reductionist view of Theodore's exegetical approach as 'historical,' offering a balanced portrayal of this exegete. Theodore is not a slave of his interpretative methodology, and he may omit the exposition of the historical setting of the Bible and introduce elements not present in the biblical narrative.Re-envisioning Theodore also reveals Theodore's previously little known exegetical ties with Pro-Nicenes and, through them, with Origen. For the first time, this book shows that his exegesis incorporates Greco-Syrian liturgical imagery.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Racial passing has fascinated thousands of American readers since the end of the nineteenth century. However, the phenomenon of Jews passing as gentiles has been all but overlooked. This book examines forgotten novels depicting Jewish Americans masquerading as gentiles. Exploring two 'waves' of publications of this subgenre--in the 1940s-1950s and 1990s-2000s--this book raises questions about the perceptions of Jewish difference during these periods.Looking at issues such as Whiteness, Americanness, gender, and race, it traces the changes in the representation of Jewish identity during the second half of the twentieth century and the beginning of the new millennium. Ohad Reznick's Imagined Non-Jews is an important intervention in the scholarship on the literature of passing. This book also makes a significant contribution to Jewish American literary studies through thoughtful close readings of texts from the 1940s and 1950s, many of them little-known today, as well as multi-ethnic American fiction from the turn-of-the-21st-century, all of them featuring characters who conceal their Jewishness in order to pass for gentile. --Lori Harrison-Kahan, Boston College, author of The White Negress: Literature, Minstrelsy, and the Black-Jewish Imaginary.
