Bligh and the faithful members of the crew were set adrift in a lifeboat, in which they managed to sail over 1,200 leagues to safety. The following year he was placed in command of a fleet to return to the South Seas in pursuit of them. …

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. THE LAIRD U. PARK, JR. COPY. London: George Nicol, 1792. First edition. Folio (11 3/4"x 9 3/8", 298mm x 240mm). With 8 engraved plates: portrait of William Bligh to the frontispiece, and 7 engraved plates of plans and charts (5 folding). Bound in modern quarter black calf over marbled paper boards. Vice-Admiral William Bligh (1754-1817) was an officer of the Royal Navy and a colonial administrator. The mutiny on the HMS Bounty occured in 1789 under his command. The mutineers, led by Master's Mate Fletcher Christian, set him and 18 loyal men adrift in an open launch in uncharted waters. Astoundingly, they all managed to reach Timor alive, after a journey of 3,618 nautical miles. "One of the most remarkable incidents in the whole of maritime history." (Hill) This is Bligh's official account of the mutiny, based on his journals. His original mission had been to collect bread-fruit trees from Tahiti and take them to the West Indies. They were intended to feed a growing slave population. Born in Philadelphia, LAIRD U. PARK, JR. (1922-2001) graduated from Princeton with a degree in engineering in 1947, after serving in WWII. He began his career in pharmacology and went on to manufacture laboratory equipment with Troemer, Inc. Purchased from his sale (the "Americana Library of Laird U. Quarto, with frontispiece portrait, an engraving of the breadfruit, and six plans and charts; handsome modern binding of polished calf, spine ornately gilt in compartments between raised bands, double labels. First edition of one of the most famous of all voyage books: the official narrative of Bligh's voyage in the Bounty and the mutiny. At the time of publication Bligh was on his second breadfruit voyage, and the work was edited by James Burney, with the assistance of Sir Joseph Banks, both of whom had, like Bligh himself, sailed with Cook. This is the full account of the voyage, and contains a slightly altered version of Bligh's account of the mutiny, which had been separately published two years earlier. The mutiny and its ramifications would haunt Bligh always, although his reputation was redeemed by the epic open-boat journey across 4000 miles of the Pacific, and later by the part he played in the battle of Copenhagen alongside Nelson. His inglorious career as governor of New South Wales would later ruin his reputation again. The Bounty voyage was commissioned by the Admiralty, on the instructions of George III, to collect breadfruit plants ("the Merchants and Planters interested in His Majesty's West India Possessions have represented that the Introduction of the Bread Fruit Trees into the Islands in those Seas to constitute an Article of Food would be a very essential Benefit to the Inhabitants ."). The mutiny of 28 April 1789 resulted in Bligh and 18 others being cast adrift in an open-boat - certainly the most infamous mutiny in maritime history. His achievement in charting large sections of the Australian coast under conditions of terrible hardship partly completed the work of Cook himself on the Australian east coast. Bligh was justifiably proud of his achievements in mapping and charting during his travails, and each of the printed charts features his name prominently: the sketch of Matavai Bay in Tahiti even features his signature in facsimile. . The frontispiece portrait slightly stained, and the oval detail offset onto the title-page as seems to be always the case; otherwise very good.…

First Edition. First edition. Quarto (11 1/4 x 9 inches; 286 x 230 mm.). [10], 264 pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Captain Bligh by J. Condé after J. Russell and seven engraved plates and charts (five of which are folding). Plate entitled "NE Coast of New Holland" trimmed close at lower edge affecting bottom edge of chart. Plate entitled "Sections of the Bread-fruit" trimmed close at bottom edge, affecting the caption. Original half tan calf over contemporary marbled boards. Calf is tooled in gilt and blind. Spine stamped in gilt and blind, and lettered in gilt. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Boards and edges a bit rubbed. Some minor cracking to tops and bottom of spine at the joints. Pages 13 with a small piece missing from upper outer corner, and page 15 with a small piece missing to upper margin, neither tear affecting text. Some minor foxing to pages 93-104. Some occasional offsetting from plates. Title-page with offsetting from frontis. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown. Overall a very clean crisp copy. In a blue cloth clamshell. "An extremely important book. This is the first edition of the official account of the Bounty expedition. It includes a somewhat revised version of the text of Bligh's narrative. The account was based upon Bligh's journal but was written, edited, and seen through the press by James Burney, under the supervision of Sir Joseph Banks, during Bligh's absence from London while on his second breadfruit voyage. One bit of irony is that Bligh returned to Tahiti again to get more breadfruit, and, after delivering them to the West Indies, it was discovered that the natives did not care for the taste, much preferring their own bananas" (Hill). "At the time I published the Narrative of the Mutiny on Board the Bounty, it was my intention that the preceding part of the Voyage should be contained in a separate account. This method I have since been induced to alter. The reason of the Narrative appearing first, was for the purpose of communicating early information concerning an event which had attracted the public notice: and being drawn up in a hasty manner, it required many corrections. Some circumstances likewise were omitted; and the notation of time used in the Narrative, being according to sea reckoning, in which the days begin and end at noon, must have produced a degree of obscurity and confusion to readers accustomed only to the civil mode. And this would have increased, as the remainder of the voyage, on account of the numerous shore occurrences at Otaheite and elsewhere, could not, with clearness and propriety, have been related in any other than the usual manner of reckoning. Besides remedying these inconveniencies, I have thought a fuller account of our passage from Timor to Europe, than that contained in the Narrative, would not be unacceptable. These reasons, with the manifest convenience of comprising the whole Voyage in one continued narrative, in preference to letting it appear in disjointed accounts, will, it is hoped, be allowed a sufficient excuse for having varied from the original intention. Nevertheless, for the accommodation of the purchasers of the Narrative already published, those who desire it, will be supplied with the other parts of the Voyage separate; i.e. the part previous to the Mutiny, and the additional account after leaving Timor." (From the Advertisement). Ferguson, Australia, 125. Hill I, p. 27. Sabin 5910. Wantrup 62a. HBS 68604. $12,500.…

A voyage to the South sea, undertaken by command of His Majesty, for the purpose of conveying the bread-fruit tree to the West Indies, in His Majesty s ship the Bounty, commanded by Lieutenant William Bligh. Including an account of the mutiny on board the said ship, and the subsequent voyage of part of the crew, in the ship s boat, from Tofoa, one of the Friendly islands, to Timor, a Dutch settlement in the East Indies. London, George Nicol, 1792. FIRST EDITION. Large 4o. pp. 264. (1), [i], a4 (1) b4c1 (1) c3d-o4 (1) p-x4y2 (1) y2z42a1 (1) 2a32b-2e42f2 (1) 2f22g42h3 (1) 2h12i-2l4. Engraved portrait frontispiece, one plate and 6 engraved maps and charts (5 folding). T-p s upper corner torn apart and repaired with new paper. E1 repaired and reinforced to margin on verso; T2 with extensive repaired tear to upper margin towards centre, no text loss. In contemporary mottled calf, rebacked, title to gilt spine in six compartments with anchor emblem, corners and a few abrasions repaired. A complete, good copy in a fine binding. First edition of this work detailing one of the most remarkable incidents in the whole of British maritime history. Following a request by West Indian merchants to George III, Sir Joseph Banks recommended that the Admiralty fit out the Bounty for a voyage to collect bread-fruit trees from Tahiti for shipment to the West Indies. Banks also recommended Lieutenant Bligh as commander of the voyage on which Fletcher Christian sailed as the Master s Mate. Reaching Cape Horn in 1787 and encountering fierce head winds, Bligh retreated across the South Atlantic to round the Cape of Good Hope and sail south to Australia and New Zealand to Tahiti. This is the first official account of the voyage and mutiny, edited from Bligh s journals by James Burney under the supervision of Sir Joseph Banks while Bligh was on his second bread-fruit voyage. The year of publication also marked the court-martial proceedings against fourteen returned mutineers, three of whom were hanged. Ferguson 125; Hill 135; Kroepelien 93; NMM 1:624; Sabin 5910. …

First Edition. First Edition. Folding engraved frontispiece plan of the Bounty's twenty-three-foot launch and three engraved charts (two folding) after William Harrison, engraved by J. Walker. iv,88pp. Uncut. 1 vols. 4to. First edition of Bligh's account of the famous mutiny and the incredible voyage which followed. Although the mutiny is now the best known incident, the most remarkable part of the narrative is undoubtedly Bligh's account of the voyage in the Bounty's launch. His achievement of safely navigating an open vessel packed with nineteen men a distance of four thousand miles without serious mishap is almost without parallel in the history of ocean travel. He not only piloted the boat to safety, but "In the course of this hazardous journey Bligh took the opportunity to chart and name parts of the unknown north-east coast of New Holland as he passed along it" (Wantrup, p.128). The resulting chart of the "NE Coast of New Holland" was first published in the present work. Ferguson 71; Hill 132; Kroepelien 87; Wantrup 61; Sabin 5908a Publisher's blue-paper covered boards, sympathetically rebacked. Endpapers renewed, extraneous creases to the folding plate. 8vo (200 x 125 mm). (12), 376 pp. With frontispiece portrait and an engraved plate of the bread fruit. Contemporary tree calf (rebacked, preserving the original title label). - With Bligh's autograph: a fine example cut from a letter and mounted at an early date on a preliminary blank above a manuscript summary of the voyage. First Irish edition of the first complete account of "one of the most heroic sea voyages ever made" (Hill). - The breadfruit, a species of flowering mulberry tree native to Southeast Asia and most of the Pacific Islands, had first been brought back to Europe from Tahiti by Sir Joseph Banks in 1770. It was at the instigation of Banks, who had recognised the breadfruit's enormous potential as a staple food product, and in particular as an economical means of feeding slaves, that Bligh's ill-fated 1787 expedition to Tahiti in the Bounty was mounted. Bligh's brief was to collect as many samples of breadfruit as possible with the intention of propagating them in the Caribbean. - At the end of April 1789, shortly after the Bounty's departure from Tahiti, 24 of the ship's crew mutinied. The mutineers were led by Fletcher Christian, the master's mate. Bligh and 18 loyal men were cast adrift in the ship's launch. Over the course of the next 45 days Bligh succeeded in navigating westward across 4,000 miles of ocean in the tiny boat, by way of the northern coast of Australia and the Torres Strait, eventually reaching the island of Timor at the eastern end of the Indonesian archipelago. "In the course of this hazardous journey Bligh took the opportunity to chart and name parts of the unknown north-east coast of New Holland as he passed along it" (Wantrup). On his return to England, Bligh was acquitted at a court-martial and promoted to Commander. He was to lead a second expedition to the Pacific in 1791-93 which succeeded in transporting breadfruit from Tahiti to the Caribbean. - Scattered foxing, last leaf with a Japanese tissue repair (no loss). - Front pastedown has contemporary armorial bookplate of Irish MP Owen Wynne and his signature to title-page. - Ferguson 127.…

First edition of Bligh's personal account of "one of the most remarkable incidents in the whole of maritime history", published two years before his full official version of the voyage and the mutiny in an effort to influence opinion in his favour, absolving him "from any blame that might be levelled against him because of the incident" (Hill). The story of Fletcher Christian's mutinous commandeering of the Bounty, and the setting adrift of Bligh and his 18 loyal crewmen on a 23-foot launch is a tale known to all, but "what is not so well known is that in the course of this hazardous journey Bligh took the opportunity to chart and name parts of the unknown north-east coast of New Holland as he passed along it - an extraordinary feat of seamanship" (Wantrup). Despite the film-fuelled condescension of posterity, it should be remembered that Bligh's skill as a navigator, perhaps second only to Cook of his time, and his courage as a seaman, ensured his continued employment by the Admiralty, led to his election to the Royal Society, and to his appointment as governor of New South Wales. Ferguson, 71; Hill, 132; Kroepelien, 87; O'Reilly-Reitman, 543; Parks 7; Sabin, 5908a; Wantrup, 61. Quarto (288 x 231 mm). With the folding engraved plan "A Copy of the Draught from which the Bounty's Launch was built" by Mackenzie, and 3 engraved charts by J. Walker after W. Harrison, two of them folding. Recent lightly sprinkled half calf, old boards, to style, red morocco label, single gilt rules enclosing the bands and to the spine and corner edges. The folding plates are somewhat creased from old misfolds, and have some minor splitting and chipping, the "Draught" with a small scraped puncture, some off-setting from the plates as usual, light browning and some marginal finger-soiling, some later red-pencilled marginal relating to the distance from Tofoa to Timor, overall a very good copy.…

First edition of Bligh's account of "one of the most remarkable incidents in the whole of maritime history", published two years before his full official narrative in an effort to influence opinion in his favour, absolving him "from any blame that might be levelled against him" (Hill). After Fletcher Christian's mutiny, Bligh and his 18 loyal crewman sailed over 3,500 miles from Tahiti to Tofoa in a 23-foot launch. "What is not so well known is that in the course of this hazardous journey Bligh took the opportunity to chart and name parts of the unknown north-east coast of New Holland as he passed along it - an extraordinary feat of seamanship" (Wantrup). Despite the film-fuelled condescension of posterity, Bligh's skill as a navigator, perhaps second only to Cook of his time, and his courage as a seaman, ensured his continued employment by the Admiralty, led to his election to the Royal Society and his appointment as governor of New South Wales. Leaf C1 (pp. 9-10) is a cancel as usual, altering the phrasing of a sentence on the fourth and fifth line on page nine (from "that I should one day be able to recount to my King and country my misfortune" to "that I should one day be able to account to my King and country for the misfortune"). Although the change is slight, "the precise expression was something that concerned Bligh. he recognised that the first version was subjective and personal, the second objective and impersonal" (ibid.). Provenance: "Ths. Denman", with his signature on the title page and extensive notes on the Bounty crew list (pages 6-7). This is probably Thomas Denman (1733-1815), uncle of Thomas Denman Ledward, acting surgeon on the Bounty. Denman entered the medical service of the Royal Navy as a surgeon's mate, in service until 1763. He established a reputation as one of the leading man-midwives in the mid-1780s, becoming best known for advocating the induction of women in premature labour with contracted pelves. Denman notes which crew members were tried by court-martial in Portsmouth in 1792, how many were acquitted or condemned, and the two recommended by the Court at His Majesty's mercy (Heywood and Martin). Notably, five men are noted as "D.D." meaning "Discharged Dead", a technical term used in the Royal Navy. A later hand has annotated the name of Thomas Denman Ledward in pencil, adding the name "Denman" and "nephew of Thomas Denman M.D. Died on the return journey". Ferguson 71; Hill 132; Kroepelien, 87; Parks Collection 7; Sabin 5908a; Wantrup 61. Harrison; apt newspaper clippings and ephemera loosely inserted. iv, 88. Contemporary black half calf, rebacked to style using black roan, flat spine lettered in gilt, light yellowish pink boards, edges sprinkled red. Corners and board edges worn, leather with minor abrasions and neatly recoloured in places, boards scuffed with stripping in places, small mark to fore-edge, inner hinges starting but firm, title a little soiled, scattered foxing, plates offset and a touch creased (" A Copy" with a few short tears along platemark). First edition of Bligh's full account of his voyage leading to the famous mutiny - "an extremely important book" (Hill). In mid-1787, Bligh received the command of the Bounty, then being fitted to transport breadfruit and other plants from the South Seas to the West Indies. On 28 April 1789, when off the island of Tonga, Fletcher Christian led part of the crew in mutiny. The rebels set Bligh and 18 men adrift in the ship's 23 foot long launch, with little food and only minimal navigational tools. Incredibly Bligh managed to reach Kupang in Timor two months later with the loss of only one man, after a harrowing 3,500 mile voyage. Embarrassingly, Bligh found himself having to defend his own conduct. He had already published a shorter Narrative of the Mutiny in 1790. The advertisement to this work explains that "the reason of the Narrative appearing first, was for the purpose of communicating early information concerning an event which attracted the public notice: and being drawn up in a hasty manner, it required many corrections". This is the first appearance of Bligh's account of the entire expedition; the "extended and revised text makes this the fundamental published account of the Bounty saga" (Parks Collection). However, publication did not achieve his aim of rehabilitating his reputation, which was later further damaged by another mutiny and other serious insubordinations. Provenance: Thomas Best (1753-1815) of Park House, Boxley, Kent, with his signature in ink on the front board, initials pin pricked on rear board, and woodcut armorial bookplate on the front pastedown. The Best family fortune stemmed from a thriving brewing business. Founded in the 17th century, the company expanded during the 18th century, especially under the leadership of James Best, the father of Thomas. Additionally, with an inscription on the front pastedown: "this is Mr T. Best prize of the Bersted Book Club, 1792" and the unusual and elaborately printed bookplate of the Bersted Book Society on the verso of the front free endpaper. The bookplate shows the names of the members in a neat circular design. ESTC T52638; Ferguson 125; Hill 135; Howgego I B107; NMM, Voyages & Travel, 624; Parks Collection 12; Sabin 5910; Spence 104. First edition of Bligh's firsthand account of "one of the most remarkable incidents in the whole of maritime history [which ultimately absolved him] from any blame that might be levelled against him because of the incident" (Hill). Quarto, original boards, lacking the spine, engraved folding plan "A copy of the draft from which the Bounty's launch was built", three engraved folding charts ÂJ. Walker after W. Harrison. In good condition. Scarce in the original boards. The HMS Bounty was acquired by the Royal Navy in 1787 to transport breadfruit plants from Tahiti (then rendered "Otaheite"), a Polynesian island in the south Pacific, to the British colonies in the West Indies. Command of the expedition was given to Lieutenant William Bligh, whose experiences included Captain James Cook's third and final voyage (1776â"80) in which he had served as sailing master, or chief navigator, on HMS Resolution. HMS Bounty left Spithead on 23 December 1787 with Bligh as captain, accompanied by a 44-man crew, two botanists, David Nelson and William Brown, and a diarist, James Morrison. Bligh reached Tahiti on 26 October 1788; after more than five months, the Bounty sailed for the West Indies laden with "more than 1,000 young breadfruit plants". On 28 April, after a few weeks at sea, Fletcher Christian, the master's mate, led sections of the crew in a mutiny and commandeered the Bounty, setting Bligh and 18 loyal crewmen adrift in a 23-foot long launch. Despite being given little in terms of navigational tools, Bligh reached Coupang modern day Kupang, Timor, then a Dutch East India settlement on 14 June 1789, after a 3,500 mile long voyage. During this "hazardous journey Bligh took the opportunity to chart and name parts of the unknown north-east coast of New Holland as he passed along it an extraordinary feat of seamanship" (Wantrup, Australian Rare Books 1788-1900). By the time of his return to England in August 1793, following his successful conveyance of breadfruit to the West Indies aboard Providence, professional and public opinion had turned against him. The present first edition of Bligh's account appeared two years prior to the full official version which pardoned him of any misconduct in the incident.…

Excessively rare. One of a handful of known copies of a special advance issue of Bligh's narrative of his voyage in the Bounty. This issue contains the original 1790 printing of the Mutiny bound after a special advance printing of Bligh's account of the remainder of the voyage. In this version the text goes to page 153, with page 154 left blank, resuming on page 246 with page 245 blank save for a contemporary manuscript note in ink: 'reader, the substance of the history between pages 153 and 246 will be found after page 264 in the Narrative of the Mutiny, at the end of this volume.' Presumably the original intention was that the mutiny account was to have been bound to fill the gap between pages 154 and 246. We can only trace the F.G. Coles copy, sold at auction in 1965. There are also copies in the National Library of Australia and the Mitchell Library at the State Library of New South Wales. In 1787 Lieutenant Bligh took command of HMS Bounty, hoping to win a premium offered by the Royal Society for anyone who could obtain breadfruit trees, seen as a cheap, high-energy food source which could be given to British slaves. Having obtained the trees in Tahiti, Bligh set course for the Caribbean, where experiments were to take place to see if they would prove a successful food crop for slaves. However the ship never reached its destination because of a mutiny mounted by Bligh's protà gà Fletcher Christian on 28 April 1789, during which he and eighteen loyal crewmen were forced into a tiny launch. Despite a brief landing in Tofua, where one crewman was killed by hostile natives, the rest of the crew survived the seemingly impossible 3,618 nautical miles voyage to Timor, the nearest European settlement, after a 47-day voyage. They visited several more islands before being transported back to Britain, during which time Bligh sketched maps of the various coasts. First editions. 4to (29.2 x 23 cms), x, 1-153, [ii], 246-264; iv, 88pp., engraved portrait of Bligh and 7 engraved charts, plates and plans (of which one folding and 4 double-page); folding plan frontispiece, 3 charts (2 folding). Together bound in contemporary sprinkled calf, neatly rebacked. Ferguson 126; Wantrup 62b.…
