Lettered canvas-backed paper-covered boards featuring a wood engraving by Gill. With a title page wood cut ('Dumb Driven Cattle', reproduced on the upper board) and a further ten wood cut illustrations and devices. Tips of corners rubbed, boards lightly chafed, and the backstrip lightly tanned. Very good. 1,500 copies were printed. Evan Gill 259.

1st Edition, proof copy [without price on front cover] but without the limitation page unsigned. Cloth backed boards a little worn,snag to spine. An early collaboration between Pepler and Gill as seen as a precursor to the S. Dominic's Press at Ditchling.

Quarter grey cloth, with black spine titling (occasionally it is black cloth and unlettered), red paper-covered boards repeating the title-page. Half-title very lightly yellowed. A fine copy. First edition. Although printed at the Westminster Press, this book is always associated with the Saint Dominic's Press as being the first joint production of Gill and Pepler. A prospectus describes it as 'a sociological satire containing an account of a cinema entertainment in Satan's Circuit and an appreciation of No.27, an English working man'. (Gill 259).

Copy no.71 of 200 numbered "proof" copies, signed by Eric Gill and Douglas Pepler. 12mo., original quarter smooth canvas with red paper covered pictorial boards, with Dumb Driven Cattle by Gill on the upper cover, a little rubbing and fading to the boards and mild spotting to endpapers, otherwise a good and bright copy. Seen as the precursor to the S. Dominic's Press with its early Gill engraving and close collaboration between Gill and Pepler. At the time this book was published, Pepler worked for the London County Council and was the organiser of the first school meals service in London. The Devil's Devices, a sociological satire, reflect his social concerns at the time and reflects on wealth and capitalism with some very interesting use of page design and printing. Printed at the Westminster Press, 441a Harrow Road, just down from our current shop.

Inscribed by Gill on the front free endpaper "Eric Gill for H. Davis, 22.3.28". A very good copy in original grey canvas spine, lettered in black, with red paper covered boards with black lettering and illustration to the front board. Some loss to the paper on the boards, affecting 7 letters of the address at the bottom. Spine with just a little darkening. Overall a very good copy. Uncommon inscribed by Gill. --Evan Gill. Bibliography of Eric Gill. No. 259. Inscribed by Illustrator(s).

No. 38 of a limited edition of only 200 'proof' copies, signed by Douglas Pepler and Eric Gill. Spine a little rubbed and toned, slight fading. One or two leaves roughly opened, light toning to limitation leaf and light spotting to end-papers. Signed by Author and Artist.

Not counted by Taylor & Sewell as a Saint Dominic's Press production, though frequently associated with that Press. 1500 copies were printed in total. Pepler has actually numbered this copy twice, having thought that his first attempt looked a bit like '64'. He has added his initials to the correction. (Gill 259). Signed by Author(s).

Seen as the precursor to the S. Dominic's Press with its early Gill engraving and close collaboration between Gill and Pepler. This copy is inscribed by Pepler for R.N. Green Armytage, a friend of the Guild members at Ditchling: "We gave up this game as too proud. Douglas Pepler". Pepler has also written a personal note to Green Armytage which is tipped in, dated from Ditchling, 26. VI. 19 and with the Guild mark in ink. He writes about The Game magazine and some beautiful verses received from Fr John which just missed going into the first edition of The Game. Also tipped in is a page monogrammed and dated 1955 by an owner of the book Stanley Scott who explains that The Game in the letter is the magazine produced at St Dominic's Press and 'the game' in the inscription is that of signing copies of the book. Reissue, inscribed by the author; 8vo; 12 woodcuts, 11 by Eric Gill, some full-page, scattered light foxing, slight toning to leaves; publisher's red cloth, black lettering to spine, spine faded, corners slightly rubbed, light toning to endpapers, otherwise a very good copy. Inscribed by the author after half-title, 'M.D.S. [?] H.D.C.P. auct / post hoc Whitsuntide 1944'. The Devil's Devices was the second book to feature Eric Gill's illustrations. Gill 259.

[ONE OF 1,500 COPIES], 11 wood-engravings by Eric Gill, pp. viii, 128, crown 8vo, original quarter beige canvas, backstrip lettered in black, printed scarlet boards, the upper board repeating title-page engraving (the price 2/6d. beneath), corners slightly knocked, faint spotting to edges and endpapers, attractive bookplate to front pastedown, very good. Illustrated with twelve woodcut illustrations and devices, eleven of which are by Eric Gill. 8vo., in a variatn binding of grey wrappers printed in red (usually the book is bound in red boards printed in black) with an engraving by Gill, fore and lower edges uncut, a little mild rubbing to upper board but otherwise very good and bright. Hammersmith, The Hampshire House Workshops. This was the first book published by Pepler, although not printed by him, (the first book with the S. Dominic's Press imprint was published in 1916) and remains one of the best. Ownership inscription in pencil of Jean Preston.
