Pickersgill (1782-1875) and Uwins (1782-1857) were both English artists who exhibited at the Royal Academy. Very good, on a piece of grey paper roughly two inches by four. From a collection of Autograph Signatures cut from petitions to the Artists' General Benevolent Fund. Blank reverse.

Dimensions of paper roughly one centimetre by six wide. Close-cropped but clear and entire. On aged paper with traces of glue from previous mount on reverse.

Irish-born author (1800-81; nee Fielding), wife of Samuel Carter Hall. On slip of paper roughly 14 centimeters by 2 centimeters. In good condition, although paper discoloured and with traces of glue from previous mounting on reverse. Apparently the foot of a page of printed accounts, with 'Brewster & West, Printers, Hand Court, Dowgate.' in bottom left-hand corner. 'To be returned to Mrs. S C Hall on or before the 1st. of June' written over the printed part, but the signature 'Anna Maria Hall' written across clear paper. Image on application.

Behnes (died 1864) was a sculptor, and Robins (1778-1847) a flamboyant auctioneer. Very good, on piece of paper roughly two inches by three and a half. From a collection of Autograph Signatures cut from petitions to the Artists' General Benevolent Fund. Blank reverse.

On irregular piece of paper roughly 4.5 x 4.5 cm. Good, on lightly discoloured paper. With part of signature '[S]mith' below. Docketed on reverse 'Sir Wm. Trumbull Statesman Wm 3d'.

Dimensions of paper roughly 4 x 6.5 cm. Good, although with slight wear at left and small part of loop at beginning of signature crossing over a printed vertical line. Docketed in pencil 'Lord Treasurer'.

A piece of laid paper, roughly 8 x 20 cm, cut from a document by an autograph collector. Yorke's signature, large (4.5 x 7 cm) and bold, is in the bottom right-hand corner. The surviving text is in a secretary's hand, and reads: ' of Our Reign. | By His Majesty's Command. | C Yorke | Our Trusty and Wellbeloved William Gordon Esqr General in Our Army & Col of Our 71st (Highland) Regiment of Foot or to the Officer appointed by him to raise Men for Our said Regiment'. According to Yorke's entry in the Oxford DNB, 'In May 1854 he succeeded Colonel Airey as military secretary at headquarters in England, and consequently did not serve in the Crimea. As military secretary he was responsible for much of the paperwork at military headquarters in London.'.

On a piece of paper roughly 4 x 7 cm. Very good, on slightly discoloured paper. Reads ' 34 years of His Maies | [signed] Arlington'. The second of the two versions of Arlington's signature reproduced by Rawlins ('Five Hundred Years of British Autographs', p.63, no.8). Arlington was the first 'A' in the CABAL ministry, the name made up of the initials of the five privy councillors who conducted Charles II's government after the fall of Clarendon in 1667: Clifford, Arlington, Buckingham, Ashley and Lauderdale.

Maternal grandfather of Queen Mary (1774-1850). In very good condition. Paper dimensions approximately 1 1/2 inches by 4 inches. Reads 'Adolphus Frederick. | Lt: Genl: & Col. in Chief.' Image on application.

Uncle (1773-1843) of Queen Victoria, notable book collector. Paper dimensions approximately 1 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches. In good condition. Florid signature 'Augustus Frederick' above printed word '(Rank)' beside 'Lieutt. Coll. Com.' in manuscript, which in turn is above printed word '(Corps)' beside 'Loyal North Britons' in manuscript. A good firm signature, appended to a document in another hand, simply reading: 'Admit the Bearer to the House of Commons'. The illegible address and date are in the same hand. In fair condition, lightly aged, with traces of mount on blank reverse.

On 6 x 9.5 cm piece of paper. In good condition, laid down on slightly-larger piece of paper (part of leaf from an album). Grant's distinctive forward-sloping signature at centre. At top of paper: ' Reign, Annoque Domini 1868.' Beneath the signature, in a contemporary hand: '"Sir John Peter Grant" Lieut-Governor of Central Provinces of India during Mutiny. [sic] Governor-General of Jamaica born 1807'.

This British clergyman served as Bishop of Norwich (1837-49). ADS, 1p, irregular 4" X 2 3/4" tipped to larger heavy album leaf, n.p., n.y. [between 1837 and 1849]. Very good. Front portion (only) of an envelope, addressed in an unknown hand to C.K. Murray, 5 Whitehall Place, London and boldly signed by Stanley in brown ink at lower left as "E. Norwich." Attractive.

Dimensions of paper roughly five inches by three-quarters of an inch. Signed 'John Pratt' between writing in a seventeenth-century chancery hand. Docketed with biographical details in a minute nineteenth-century hand, and enclosed in a piece of paper with further biographical details in another nineteenth-century hand.

On one side of 8 x 18.5 cm piece of paper, torn from the end of a letter. In fair condition, aged and worn, with traces of brown paper from mount adhering to the blank reverse. The item would appear to be entirely in the hand of the Earl, but the matter is not quite certain, and it may be in a secretarial hand, with only Cork's signature in autograph. It reads: '[.] | Sir | Your Royal Highness's | very obedient | and very humble Servant | Cork | Col | [Som.?] Reg.] Addressed to 'His R. H. | The Duke of York | &c &c &c'. Annotated, in two separate contemporary hands: 'Novr. 1795' and 'Nov. 1795.'.

On one side of 8 x 19 cm piece of paper, torn from the end of a document. In fair condition, lightly aged, with strip of paper from mount adhering to the reverse. Two folds. The signature 'Cavan' is between two horizontal lines. The rest of the document would appear to be in a secretarial hand, but the matter is not quite certain. It reads: '[.] | I have the Honor | to be | Sir | Your Royal Highness's | Most Obedt. Faithful | & Much Obliged | Humble Servt. | Cavan'. It is dated 'Cowes. | March 1st 1804' and addressed to 'His Royal Highness | The Duke of York'. Annotated n a contemporary hand at foot: 'General The Earl of Cavan'.

On a piece of paper roughly 8.5 x 19 cm. Heavily aged, creased and with wear to extremities. Signatures clear and entire. Some loss to bottom left-hand corner. Printed text (involving a transfer) with manuscript insertions. Two red wafers. Signed 'A Whitehall | Admiralty | Paymaster R.N.'; 'E. M. Zustand: Very good. Very good. - Octavus Roy Cohen's autograph penned in full on 1-3/8 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide slip of paper clipped from what appears to be a contract with a signature line on the recto and text printed on the verso. Very good. The early 20th century American author Octavus Roy Cohen (1891-1959) wrote dialect comedy stories about African-Americans. His stories became popular after being published in the Saturday Evening Post. Several were adapted into short films by Al Christie. His stereotype portrayals were unflattering to African-Americans and drew criticism from W.E.B. Du Bois who referred to them as "the monstrosities he has created".

See his entry in the Oxford DNB, in which 'deep professional commitment and mental toughness' are said to be qualities whose possession he demonstrated 'heroically'. Beatty's aggressive tactics at the Battle of Jutland are often contrasted with Jellicoe's more cautious approach. After the explosion of the Indefatigable and the Queen Mary, with the loss of 1283 officers and men, he came out with the celebrated understatement, 'There seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today'. The present item is in good condition, lightly aged, and laid down on a leaf removed from an autograph album. It is a 9.5 x 5 cm piece of paper, cut from the base of a form, with Beatty signing in red on the top line, and the following two lines written out by him in blue: 'David Beatty / Rear-Admiral / 21 June 1913.' Printed in small type at the foot: '[2726] 20002/P501 100 9/12va G & S 2032'. See image.

[3 pp.]. Bifolium. 7.5 x 9.5 inches. On June 18, 1864, Grant ordered Brevet Major General Rufus Ingalls, his Chief Quarter-master General of the Army of the Potomac, to prepare a massive supply depot at City Point, Virginia, just 20 miles from Richmond, capable of supporting the the hundreds of thousands of men and animals for the siege of Petersburg, and the fall of Richmond. Less than a month later, a special committee of three was tasked with determining the adequacy of boats between Washington D.C. and City Point, and submitted this report to Colonel Theodore B. Gates pursuant to Special Orders No. 31, ". dated 16th July 1864.inspection of the Steamers "Charlotte Vandebilt", "John Brooks", "Highland Light", and "Keyport", constituting the Mail Line, between Washington and City Point." To comply with the order, the appointed board took small test trips on each boat, assessing the accommodations, meals, and furnishings of each vessel. The detailed report concludes that ". none of the Boats now on the Line are fit for that service," too small, and concerning meals "the Board is of the opinion that they are wretched in quality and insufficient in quantity and by no means worth the price demanded for them." Dated July 22, 1864 and signed by the three boards members: Major E. R. Bowers, R. Loughran, and Darcy A. Patterson. and addressed to Col. Theodore B. Gates (1824-1911), 80th New York Infantry, who has also signed on the last page. In addition to the docketing on the verso of blank leaf which includes further notes on the transmission of the report on July 23rd and 24th, there is a final long note on July 25th signed by Brig. General Rufus Ingalls which names other boats that are suitable for such service. A rare document on what would become one of the busiest ports in the world during the Civil War. Reference: 1. 20 x 33 cm. 4 pp. Some small marginal tears, creased. Very good. An anonymous hand-written translation into English of Faraday's obituary from "Revere des Deux Mondes" about Michael Faraday (1791-1867), as written by R. Radau (who wrote several pieces on Faraday). Faraday died on August 25, 1867 and thus this is from a later date.

On 22 x 14 cm piece of laid paper, cut from the foot of a document. In fair condition, lightly aged and creased, with tiny closed tear to one edge. Folded three times. At head, in the kings hand: '[.] terrattelse lander. Stockholms Slott den 6 Maj 1847. / Oscar'. Directly beneath the firm, clear signature, is the embossed circular seal, under paper, 6 cm in diameter, with motto 'OSCAR SVER NOR GOTH OCH W KONUNG / RATT OCH SANNING'.

On one side of an 8 x 10 cm piece of paper. Aged and worn, with light offsetting from another document. The two signatures (both 'A. E. Cockburn') are at the right hand corners. The verdict and sentence ('Guilty | 6 Mo. Imprisonment') are written between two lines centred at the left-hand margin. The purport of the document is unclear: it may be that the judge was required to record the verdict and sentence in this way for the clerk of the court.

Known as the "Father of the House of Representatives" for his lengthy (13 terms) service, this Pennsylvania representative served from 1887 to 1913. Partly-printed ADS, 1p, 3½" X 8½", n.p. [Washington, DC], n.d. [1895 September 25 inkstamped]. Near fine. Partly-printed Bureau of Pensions form for Congressional use. Dalzell pens in Loveina M. Kunkle of Pittsburgh as the claimant for soldier Jacob L. Kunkle of Company "I," 11th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, and requests to be advised on "present status claim," signing boldly. A private named Jacob L. Kunkle (1843-63) is known to have enrolled at Kittanning, Pennsylvania in 1862 and died of "Congestion of the Brain" in Virginia in 1862; Loveina was obviously next of kin, though her relationship is unclear, and presumably petitioned her congressman to find out if she could receive any pension because of this relationship. It's not believed Jacob Kunkle was married, so perhaps she was a sister.

This English cleric served as Bishop of Bristol (1803-07) before becoming the noted Bishop of Exeter (1807-20). ADS, 1p, irregular 5½" X 2¼" tipped to larger heavy album leaf, n.p. [Torquay postal cancellation], n.y. [1811 April 30 postal cancellation]. Very good. Front portion (only) of a pale blue envelope, addressed in Pelham's hand to C.K. Murray Esq. at 5 Whitehall Place in London and signed by him at lower left with his title. Attractive.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Original autograph document signed and sealed by Haci Hidayet Agazâde Mustafa who was 'ayân' and one of 'eshraf' (descendant from a local rooted and powerful family) in 'Emirler' Karyesi (Gaziantep - Aintab). (18 x11 cm). In Ottoman script. 1 p. Includes seven lines. Sent to Hacizâde Raif Efendi. Text: "Rif'atlu Kilisli Hacizâde Raif Efendi Hazretlerine, Rif'atu efendim Emirler Karyesi (?) azâ olmak üzere muhtarimiz Mustafa Bey'e yüz gurus virüb leffen gönderilen ilmühaber mûcibince azâ idüb isbu ilmühaberi ahz ediniz. Fî 13 Mayis sene [1]306 [1890].". It says that a bribery will be given to the local manager and that document will be destroyed. Signed by Author(s).

Dodington (1691-1762); Oxenden (1694-1775) and Yonge (1693-1755) were Whig politicians and allies of Sir Robert Walpole. The fragment of a document would appear to relate to their positions as Commissioners of the Treasury. Dimensions 3 1/2 inches by 4 inches. Somewhat discoloured with age, but in good condition and with good clear signatures: 'Geo: Dodington | Geo Oxenden | Wia: Yonge'. The printed fragment to the left of the signatures reads: 'ceipt of His | said [in manuscript] 34. as by a | e same Day | Interest for | te of Four | num, at the | onths, from | alley, until | Principal. | th [in manuscript] his - or | ce, shall be'.
