This English cleric served as Bishop of Bristol (1803-07) before becoming the noted Bishop of Exeter (1807-20). ADS, 1p, irregular 5½" X 2¼" tipped to larger heavy album leaf, n.p. [Torquay postal cancellation], n.y. [1811 April 30 postal cancellation]. Very good. Front portion (only) of a pale blue envelope, addressed in Pelham's hand to C.K. Condition issues include: 11/15 - a name (McClaren) written lightly several times with different spellings on the front cover, cartoons cut out at the bottom of pages 97/98 (affects Gold Bond ad on page 97 & cartoon on 98) and 113/114 (cartoon on 113 & the text of George Session Perry story Reception at Puno on 114) ); 12/6 - both covers are loose, there is a light crease down the center of pages 99 - 116, a couple of small holes in the upper right edge at the top of pages 117/118 (no text affected), a light diagonal crease running toward the spine on pages 124 - 132, and edge wear to the back covver with chips at the top (2" x 1") and bottom (1.5" x .5") at the spine & the lower left corner (3" x 2.5"); and 12/27 - a 2" closed tear to the fore edge of the front cover. The fiction by Wodehouse, & Gardner are not affected by the cutouts in the11/15 issue. A flawed but acceptable set with a serial installments and short stories by prominent and collectible authors, and articles & ads reflecting the time immediately prior to the US' entrance into WW II. Complete in five volumes. Uniformly bound in the publisher's original cloth. Each work is illustrated with a frontispice. Volume I is then followed by seven plates; Volume II contains three further plates; Volume III contains five further plates; and Volumes IV and V contain four additional plates each. Collated, complete. An extensive twentieth-century edition of The Newgate Calendar. Originally appearing as a monthly bulletin of executions by the Keeper of London's Newgate Prison, the title was appropriated by a number of publishers in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, who released numerous macabre chapbooks on notorious criminals of the time. Edited by J. L. Rayner and G. T. Crook, the present work compiles writings from a range of sources, including the notable, previously compiled collection of Andrew Knapp and William Baldwin. Uniformly bound in the publisher's original cloth. Previous ownership signature to the front free endpaper of Volume I, dated 1927. Externally, generally smart with moderate bumping and rubbing, resulting in notable chips to the spine tail of Volume I and spine head of Volume IV. Further, more minimal, shelf wear and a few small tears to the spine heads and tails of the remaining volumes, and cracking towards the top half of the front joint of Volume V, the board remaining firmly bound. Light marking to a few of the boards. Internally, generally firmly bound, the hinges a little weaker in places and especially to the front hinge of Volume V.
