Les lettres de Courbet à ses amis et à ses marchands, mais aussi à ses adversaires en art et en politique, se révèlent riches en renseignements qui éclairent d'un jour nouveau une production picturale d'une rare complexité. La correspondance de l'artiste documente son uvre de pionnier, qui annonce l'impressionnisme. Ce point de vue permet une analyse inédite de la période de maturité de Courbet qui s'étend des années 1860 où, après avoir été identifié à ses débuts aux grandes uvres de critique sociale, l'artiste aborde la production de scènes de chasse, de paysages, de nus, de portraits et de natures mortes qui exprime un nouveau rapport entre homme, nature et société, jusqu'en 1873, année de l'exil en Suisse, à la Tour-de-Peilz au bord du lac Léman, où naît un uvre tardif encore trop mal connu.
