Les lettres de Courbet à ses amis et à ses marchands, mais aussi à ses adversaires en art et en politique, se révèlent riches en renseignements qui éclairent d'un jour nouveau une production picturale d'une rare complexité. La correspondance de l'artiste documente son uvre de pionnier, qui annonce l'impressionnisme.
