Beautiful (and rather spicy) illustrations, fantastic binding.

Blue on silver decorated endpapers, front pastedown has central Ex Libris panel, facing endpaper has central blank panel for owner's sig. (not present), rear endpapers have 'Canticum Canticorum' in the corresponding panels, blank fly, leaf with publisher's small brown logo central recto, blank verso, half title 'Le Cantique de Salomon' in central disc with bird-decorated border (brown)+repeat with 'Canticum Canticorum' in disc+dedication from Zeev Raban to 'Dr.le Prof.Boris Schatz' with French decorated brown t.p. on verso. facing tipped in elaborate coloured 'illuminated' Hebrew t.p. (see image) with tissue guard, this format of French brown-printed text in an elaborate border (of which there are two formats depending on text size)+tissue guard+tipped in Hebrew text illuminated by Zeev Raban continues for next 25 openings (unpaginated), the brown pub.logo is also present towards bottom of tissue guards (these all present, none loose, but a couple have crease marks)+blank p.with colophon on verso. This would be internally fine but for browning to edges throughout (presumably common to all copies), otherwise clean & unmarked; the covers are clean and bright, bottom outer corners slightly bumped, trivial rub bottom spine and a trivial small dent towards top back joint, the cloth is also a little rippled towards the bottom of back joint, clearly a binding fault, each cover has a gilt dotted border, front has sizeable circular gilt & silver 'Canticum Canticorum' in bird-decorated border (as half-title) towards top, gilt-panelled spine, back has a small gilt and black design of woman stroking two small deer. Despite the faults this remains in my judgment a VG copy, being clean and unmarked with all the plates and tissue guards present in excellent condition. Other versions of this were also published (as publisher's name suggests) but unclear whether they all have this parallel text format and this appears to be only French one. Raban is identified with the Bezalal school of decorative arts and worked in many different media. . Very scarce. Note: quoted shipping rates are calculated for 500-700 gram net weight, cost will be modified up or down as appropriate outside this range.

In the usual Hebrew format, this book reads right-to-left instead of left-to-right. According to this orientation, front fixed endpaper has a small red sticker from an art gallery in the upper right corner. No other stickers or marks throughout the book. Pages are heavy and thick. Each verso page is beautifully illustrated with a full-color, tipped-in plate, depicting the verses inscribed below it. Text is in Hebrew, with illuminated English on facing page. A truly beautiful book, from carefully, ornately designed boards to rich colored plates.

Decorative endpapers. Illustrated Haggadah in the style of the Israeli Bezalel school, which was popular in the early 20th century. Hebrew text and English translation. Includes 4 tipped in color illustrations of Jerusalem, Rachel's Tomb, the Tower of David and the Wailing Wall. There are also numerous b/w charcoal illustrations including magnificent sequences depicting the Ten Plagues and the "Had Gadya" poem. Text in Hebrew and English. Head and tail of spine rubbed.
