The First UK printing of this illustrated edition published by the Golden Cockerel Press in 1958. Number '4' of only 75 copies specially bound in crimson morocco with gilt decorations by Mansell, and issued with an extra suite of the seven plates together with two more not printed in the book. Designed, produced and published by Christopher Sandford. Presswork of the type and collotypes on Millbourn pure-rag paper are by The Chiswick Press. The total edition limitation was only 200 copies. The BOOK is In Very Good++or better condition with a very slight small darkened area below the spine lettering which extends a little to the front spine area (see image). Gilt decorations to covers remain bright and intact. Just a hint of rubbing to the lower spine tip. Internally, some offsetting to the end-papers from the morocco in-turns. Very light toning to the text-block. Very light spotting in just a couple of places. The 9 plates are housed in the original publisher's folder which is housed with the book in the publisher's matching cloth slipcase. The latter has some mild age related markings and some rubbing to the corners. The plates are complete. Two plates have one very small area of light foxing to the outer edge only (see images) This illustrated edition was not re-issued until 1965 by USA publisher A.S. Barnes, where it appeared with a coloured DJ. Very scarce due to its small limitation. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
