Hardcover. Zustand: Poor. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair dj. Later Printing. [heavily worn book with numerous flaws, cracked hinges, most of rear endpaper torn away, tear in final text page (no loss of actual text), etc. (there is a nice vintage bookseller's label from Newbegins, San Francisco, on the rear pastedown, though); the jacket's a bit of a mess also, with numerous tears, creases, internal and external tape-repairs, staining, etc.]. Novelization of the popular courtroom melodrama about a showgirl who's accused of murdering her millionaire lover, and whose defense attorney is her brother. The play had a 437-performance run on Broadway during the 1927/28 season and was then adapted by M-G-M for its second all-talkie production, released in 1929. A much-abused copy, for sure, although the jacket might pass muster after encasement in mylar (which we will do before sending it out) and transfer to a better copy of the book.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine Minus. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo., 335pp. Sharp Stated First Edition, preceding the Heinemann British edition and the much more frequently seen Grosset & Dunlap reprint. Bound in green cloth with titles in black on front board and spine. Square, tight and clean internally. Foxing to top and fore-edges. A touch of bumping to spine ends abut quite mild. A few small abrasions on the front end-paper where it looks like erasures were done too heavily. Very attractive unclipped dust-jacket, ($2.00), has some pin-prick wear-through holes along the front flap but completely and firmly attached. Light rubbing to folds and hinges. Light soiling in spots. Buts still fresh and bright with no creases or chipping and looks lot better than the flaws would make it sound. A very pretty collectable copy of the author's first mystery and a quite uncommon title. (Hubin p.432).

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [a good solid copy, slight wear to extremities, large and attractive custom bookplate (Alex and Lois Webster) on front pastedown]. Mystery novel, of sorts, centered around New York's nightlife; one critic at the time noted that "although there is a murder in it, [it] rather is a story of too much luxury and a taut marriage than a 'who done it' book." Another contemporary review summarized the plot: "Martha and Tack Thayer, around whom the story develops, are supposed to be a fairly typical young New York couple with expensive tastes and a strong attraction for night life. Martha becomes infatuated with an attractive gigolo and Tack becomes a victim of blackmail. There is much of recent New York murders to be seen in some of the developments of the story. It is claimed to be an accurate account, though unflattering picture of a section of New York life, but in any case it bears the stamp of reality and that in itself is a worth-while accomplishment." The author, a one-time city editor of the New York Tribune, had scored a success with his previous book, a novelization of the hit play "The Trial of Mary Dugan," but unfortunately was only able to produce a handful of additional novels before his untimately death in 1933, at the age of 47.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First edition. A small stain at the bottom of the front board, else near fine in a nice, very good dustwrapper with small chips on the front panel. A novelization of a wildly successful Broadway comedy that made George Kelly the most talked-of playwright on Broadway (a few decades later his niece, Grace Kelly, would reign first in Hollywood and then in Monaco). It was the basis for three films: a 1926 Malcolm St. Clair version featuring Louise Brooks and Ford Sterling; a 1934 Charles Resiner version re-scripted by Herman J. Mankiewicz and featuring Spencer Tracy; and finally a 1946 Harry Beaumont version with Red Skelton and Marilyn Maxwell. Scarce in jacket.
