In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Rev. ed 186 pages : illustrations ; 22 cm OCLC 964661 dark red cloth ; no dustjacket ; names on front endpaper ; Nature, man and human history are reflected on in the verse of English and American poets and such prose works as the Gettysburg Address and the Declaration of Independence ; Roy Jay Cook was born on 18 July 1873, in Minneapolis. 101 Famous Poems is a long-running anthology compiled by Roy Jay Cook, first published in 1916 and continuously in print since that time. The collection brings together 101 well-known poems drawn primarily from British and American poets, presenting a wide range of classic English-language verse that reflects popular tastes of the early twentieth century. Many editions also feature a prose supplement that includes significant historical and inspirational documents, such as Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, the Declaration of Independence, the Ten Commandments, and Patrick Henry's "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" speech. The anthology encompasses works by poets including William Shakespeare, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edgar Allan Poe, Alfred Tennyson, Rudyard Kipling, Robert Frost, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, and others, with selections covering themes of inspiration, patriotism, romance, history, and reflection.Frequently indexed by title, author, and first line, the book has served as an accessible entry point to poetry for generations of readers, often appearing as a family keepsake, school text, or introduction to classic verse. Its enduring appeal lies in its presentation of familiar, memorable poems that have inspired and comforted readers across more than a century. Later editions were published under Cook's own imprint, R.J. Cook, also based in Chicago. In the 1910s and 1920s, recitation culture held significant influence in education and home settings, with memorization and oral delivery of poems serving as standard practices for building character, elocution skills, and appreciation of literary heritage. In the 1910s and 1920s, recitation culture held significant influence in education and home settings, with memorization and oral delivery of poems serving as standard practices for building character, elocution skills, and appreciation of literary heritage. Roy Jay Cook designed the collection with accessibility in mind, offering it at a low price to place classic poems within reach of every child and household across diverse economic backgrounds. This commercial approach aligned with contemporary efforts to democratize literature, ensuring poetry reached beyond elite circles into ordinary homes and classrooms where it could fulfill educational and uplifting roles.McGraw-Hill Companies, which later acquired Contemporary Books' interests, continued publication with a trade paperback reprint in 1994. After being institutionalized for insanity, Cowper found refuge in a fervent evangelical Christianity. His religious sentiment and association with John Newton (who wrote the hymn "Amazing Grace") led to much of the poetry for which he is best remembered, and to the series of Olney Hymns. His poem "Light Shining out of Darkness" (1773) gave English the phrase: "God moves in a mysterious way/ His wonders to perform." He also wrote a number of anti-slavery poems, and his friendship with Newton, who was an avid anti-slavery campaigner. ; In 1823, Cowper's correspondence was published posthumously from the original letters in the possession of his kinsman John Johnson. ; William Cowper translated Homer's two epic poems: "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey".His translations of these ancient Greek classics are considered significant contributions to English literature. --Wikipedia ; FINE. Bidloo had already published his Anatomia Humani Corporis in Amsterdam in 1685; the illustrations were based on drawings by Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711). Sales, however, were apparently quite slow, and much to Bidloo's displeasure, Cowper (1666-1709) acquired 300 complete sets of the plates from the publisher. He published these, along with a new text, under a new title and under his own name. His own contribution to the pictorial program consisted only of nine additional plates on myology, which he had drawn by Henry Cook (1642-1700) and engraved by Michiel van der Gucht (1660-1725)..References: Choulant 95 - Wellcome II, 401 - cf.
