Zustand: Fine. Two 17.5" x 11.5" sheets printed on both sides and folded to form 8 pages of text and display. Laid in are 3 circulars, a Price List, a List of Extracts, and Instructions for Water Seal; 1 Order Sheet; 1 Business Card; 1 printed return envelope; 1 sample of a generic wine label. The sheets were folded again to fit in printed yellow Milan Laboratory mailing envelope. All items fine and unused except for normal fold lines. Yellow mailing envelope torn at open end, slightly soiled with postal stamps, date stamps [1965], etc. Includes photo illustrations of Fruit Crushers, Fruit Presses; drawings and photos of corks, funnels, cork screws, bung starters, etc. Back cover with photo of the book, Winemaking at Home by Homer Hardwick. Cover photo of wine chemists at work in the lab appears to have been taken c. 1945. Perhaps things didn't change much in home wine making from '45 to '65, save the prices.

4to, 1 p. Text clear and complete, in two column, within a double-ruled border. On aged and worn paper. Under the heading: 'Prices per Dozen, free from Charges and Duties in London.' Prices, in shillings, for 52 wines, dated in manuscript to 1870. Under the heading: Red Burgundy Wines; Frozen Wines; Red Bordeaux Wines; White Burgundy Wines; Different White Wines; Old Brandies. The three Cognacs in the last section are dated to 1844, 1858 and 1862. A column of alternative prices for the wines has been deleted, and 'alone grower' corrected to 'sole grower' three times. Duvault-Blochet, one of the great figures in the development of one of the finest vineyards, had only acquired the property in 1869.

3pp. folio. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged and worn wove paper watermarked 'RUSE & TURNERS | 1834', with a few short closed tears to crease lines. The first page is headed 'Porto em 31st. December 1844', and the other two 'Porto the 31st. December 1844'. The account shows substantial sums paid in by various English wine merchants, and a final balance of 428,504 Reis 355 Dinheiro. Begins with 'Profit & Loss Dn. to Sundries' of 3887R 467D. Entries include: Brandy Account; Wines on Consignment; Casks Account; Bills Payable; Warehouse Utensils. Names include: Bell Rannie & Co; Bartlett & Mogg; L. Hart & Son; Hope Gibb & Bruce; Charles Reid & Son; Frederick Hunt & Co; Davis & Stainton; Downs & Rhodes; Sainsbury Brothers & Co; Patrick Black; Dingwall Portal; Thomas Morgan & Co; John Allen; Morgan Saunders & Co; Hope Bruce & Co.; John Ormerod & Son; John Smith; William Watson & Co; Scott & Allen; George Carroio & Co; John Wintle & Son; Martin & Washbourne; George Sanderson; W. & H. 15 pp, narrow folio (14.5 x 38 cm), in the remains of a volume which has been reused and cut up (see below). Although aged and dogeared, the eight pages carrying the accounts are in reasonable condition, with all texts clear and complete, although the last leaf of the eight has the lower third cut away. In remains of original vellum binding, with '17 Maij j683' on front board. The pages are variously paginated in a contemporary hand between 245 and 274. Among the accounts are those of Thomas Stanhope; William Sacheverell; Samuel Chase, churchwarden of Strapton; Alderman Carter; Reginald Cynder; Captain John Every; William Cavendish of Dovebridge; Mr Beaumont of Barrow; churchwardens of Feston; John Harpur; Brooke Boothby; Mr Moseley of Roulston; Samuel Orme, churchwarden of Broadfall; Mr Charles Cogge of Yeildersley; Hill Francis of Derby; Henry Keys; 'ffor ye funerall of Mr James'; John Bainbrigge; 'ffor ye: funerall of Mr Sheppard'; Mr Mellor of Ashborne; 'ffor the funerall of Mr Burton of Weston July 9o: 1710:'; William Gilbert; Robert Bingham; Captain Hopkinson; William Chambers; Simon Dogg. The itemised entries include charges for 'Lisbon', 'Canary', 'wt: wine', 'french wine', 'Vinegar', 'Rhenish', 'Lemons' and 'Galetia wt: wine'. Substantial sums are spent, with a couple of accounts totaling around £40, and one containing about fifty items. A great number of other pages of the volume have been cut out, and the eight surviving leaves of accounts are followed by one complete leaf and three parts of leaves, on which the semi-literate family of John Smith, whose signature is on the back cover, has recorded births and other family events between 1772 and 1821. The first entry reads 'Joseph Smith Build [sic] my House In the Year of our Lord 1772 Paid Mr. Ford For Bricks 16 Thousand At 18 Shillings Per Thousand £8 18s 0d Flour Bricks £1 1s 0d In Total All £40 0s 0d'.
