The popularity and widespread diffusion of this system are attributable to its relative simplicity and the fact that in contrast to the male-only tradition of Ifa divination, sixteen cowries diviners may be either men or women. For this book, William Bascom collected the entire corpus of divination verse known to a single practitioner. Fay: "Their chief concern has been for an accurate portrayal in English of all the beauty of the original texts. They have been equally fulsome in their praise of my presentation in general, but at times have entertained differences of opinion as to the use of certain words and expressions.
