paperback. Zustand: Sehr gut. Auflage: 2001 Corr. 2nd Printing ed. 800 Seiten Very good, clean copy. - Yoruba texts and English translations of a divination system that originated in Nigeria and is widely practiced today by male and female diviners in the diaspora. A landmark edition. A form of divination which has flourished for generations among the Yoruba of Nigeria, "sixteen cowries" is practiced today in many parts of the New World. The popularity and widespread diffusion of this system are attributable to its relative simplicity and the fact that in contrast to the male-only tradition of Ifa divination, sixteen cowries diviners may be either men or women. For this book, William Bascom collected the entire corpus of divination verse known to a single practitioner. The text is presented here in both English and transliterated Yoruba, accompanied by Bascom's commentary on the verses and Yoruba belief. - - WILLIAM BASCOM (1912-1981) was Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Robert L. Lowie Museum of Anthropology at the University of California at Berkeley. His works include Ifa Divination: Communication between Gods and Men in West Africa and African Folktales in the New World - ISBN 9780253208477 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 1102.…

LCCN 17000067 OCLC 2581322 LC PS3523.A613 P8 ; green and beige cloth, untrimmed ; no dustjacket ; SIGNED presentation by the author to Bascom Nolley Timmons (1890-1990), a native of Amarillo, Texas who was a writer for the Washington Post in 1916, and later an American newspaperman based in Washington, D.C., in a career that spanned close to six decades. He was an advisor to U.S. Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had been competing opposite party candidates for Vice President of the United States in 1920. Timmons died at his home in Washington, D.C., of pneumonia at the age of ninety-seven. ; On mentors Dr. William J. Battle and Dr. Edwin W. Fay: "Their chief concern has been for an accurate portrayal in English of all the beauty of the original texts. They have been equally fulsome in their praise of my presentation in general, but at times have entertained differences of opinion as to the use of certain words and expressions. For instance, in the installment which depicts "The Slowness of the Fleet," you will note that Ajax opens the canto with the idiom "Gee whiz!" One of the learned doctors insisted at this point that the more accurate translation was "Golly!" Furthermore, it must be conceded there was merit in his contention and, likely, I should have employed the term but for the fact that it did not fit in metrically with the versification of that chapter.the manuscript as first prepared by me included this passage: "The scion of Thetis inspected his face, Inscribing his name in a suitable place, Dr. Fay was eager for a freer translation and, yielding to his judgment, I have made these lines to appear in the final version thus: The brave son of Thetis examined his frame, And then took his picture and, also, his name, And gave him some dope and a bill for the same." ; A humorous re-interpretation of the Iliad ; Contents: Introductory Apology -- One Paris Caught by Three of a Kind -- The Opening of the Sack -- The Slowness of the Fleet -- The Ills of Tlium -- A New Departure -- The Shore Lines -- A Discord in Asia Minor -- A Combative Turn -- A Return Engagement -- Discarding a Queen : The Call of the Chief Operator -- A Kingdom for a Horse -- Fritz Garland Lanham ; slight water damage at top of spine affects a few spots on back pages ; else G.
