The popularity and widespread diffusion of this system are attributable to its relative simplicity and the fact that in contrast to the male-only tradition of Ifa divination, sixteen cowries diviners may be either men or women. For this book, William Bascom collected the entire corpus of divination verse known to a single practitioner.
