Four pages, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on aged paper, with small pinholes to both leaves and slight loss at the head of the second. Substantial first part of long letter, and hence lacking the signature. BBTI has Trelawny [for Trelawney] William Saunders at 6 Charing Cross between 1846 and 1853, and Edward Stanford's entry in the Oxford DNB records that he was an apprentice there, returning as partner in 1852 ('The partnership was dissolved by mutual consent in July 1853.'), and that it was Saunders who proposed Stanford for membership of the Royal Geographical Society. A good association and a scarce example of Saunders' handwriting, which has been verified by comparison with a specimen (which will be included with the item) in the Royal Geographical Society archives. Saunders begins by expressing his 'unfeigned respect' for Mangles' 'firm & unconquerable efforts towards the production of so grand & entire a work as "The Illustrated Geography & Hydrography," of which I have received prospectuses from the Geographic[a]l. Society on Wednesday'. (Mangles published a 'Synopsis' with London publisher John Bumpus in 1848, but there is no record that the work itself was ever published.) Saunders hopes he will not be thought 'presumptuous', or acting 'from interested motives', when he states that he has 'read through all your prospectuses with avidity & am now anxious to learn something more of your fine work, and as there is no publication name mentioned, nor any other person referred to for enquiries, I have taken the liberty of addressing you directly'. He hopes Mangles will admit, on reading the enclosed 'short address', that Saunders is also 'employing the humble capacity in which providence has placed me, to promote the study of Geography'. The prospectus of Saunders' unidentified work 'has only been printed a few days', but he has 'already obtained such support, as encourages me to persevere in the plan I have laid down'. He hopes before long that there will be 'a depot in this great centre of geographic enterprise where the maps of & from all countries y be readily obtained. The pursuit of a science which requires an accumulation of materials for its successful development must be dilatory, while the means of supplying & procuring such material is confined to private societies, or scattered amongst innumerable establishments, each having a conflicting interest.' He praises Mangles' 'unique work', which he will promote, in the hope that 'the addition of my name to the splendid "Physical Atlas" [by Alexander Keith Johnston (1804-1871)] of which i enclose a prospectus, will be esteemed as one mark in my favour.' As he does not want to allow 'feelings of restraint' to curb him in communicating with Mangles on the subject, he is glad his 'person is unknown to me, inasmuch as a previous connection in our respecti positions in society would no doubt have imbued me with an idea of distance, the chains of which would now gall me excessively.' Before the letter breaks off, Saunders discusses Mangles' intention 'to divide the whole globe into sections, just like England is divided in the maps of the Ordnance Survey, with the addition of Hydrographic detail along the shores & at sea, & both variations in scale suited to the peculiar exigencies of this undertaking'. He is not sure from the prospectus whether 'you contemplate this happy continuity & oneness of plan, though I doubt not such is your intention'. The letter ends abruptly at the foot of the fourth page, with the incomplete sentence: 'Is it not possible to describe the Hydrographic portion in continuance of the Geographic, so as to avoid '. Note: None of his letters listed on the NRA, but A2A records correspondence [as "Trelawny", confusingly] at the RGS, and has other material illustrating Saunders' importance in the history of map-making and exploration, contributions ranging from "Saunders' official map of the Australian Gold Country" to the map in "Stray leaves from an Arctic journal, or, Eighteen months in the polar regions : in search of Sir John Franklin's expedition, in the years 1850-51 / by Sherard Osborn". Page, 1780. Thirty-third edition (Verner). Folio (18 ¾" x 12 5/16", 477mm x 312mm). [Full collation available.] With 25 engraved charts, of which 8 are double, 12 folding and 4 integral with the text; and many woodcut charts and coastal profiles integral with the text. Bound in contemporary speckled sheep (re-backed) with a blind roll border. On the spine, five raised bands. Title green to red sheep in the second panel. All edges of the text-block sprinkled brown. Re-backed and re-cornered. A large (9 3/4", 250mm diameter) scorch-ring to the front board with soiling generally. Joints strengthened with Japanese paper, along with some similar repairs to the edges of a handful of leaves. Internally tanned and offset, with a little foxing and soiling. A few splits to the mapsheets, two with repairs. Large filled losses to the first and rear free end-papers. Ink ownership inscription of "John Tremells his Book Dated at Sea 1791/ Jno Tremells Cap.t Caleb Hathaway Master of the Brig Nancy" as well as verse, sums, lists, pen trials etc. to the rear binder's blank and end-papers (see below). Presented with two manuscript fragments (one a receipt from Tremells). Books of coastal charts and profiles had been published by the Dutch since the XVIc. Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer was the pioneer of the genre, such that "Waggoner" became the English term for coastal atlases, an early proprietary eponym. The English, great XVIIc enemies of the Dutch, began to catch up with John Seller's English Pilot series, beginning in 1671. Seller was named in that year hydrographer to Charles II, and began in earnest to chart the coasts of Britain (the first book), the Continent (the second), the Orient (third), America (fourth, first published 1689) and Africa (fifth). Cumming in his British Maps of Colonial America calls it "the first significant collection of charts exclusively of the American coasts to be published in England. . . The English Pilot: The Fourth Book must have been a godsend. . . to the navigator of American waters in that period, it was his Bible. Whatever its shortcomings, there was really no substitute, no real competitor, for over sixty years" (p. 39). Coolie Verner published "A carto-bibliographical study of The English Pilot. The Fourth Book" (1960), in which he traced 37 editions -- modern bibliographers might call some of them issues -- of a shifting and growing work that was published for over a century (the final edition was in 1794). From the 18 charts of the first edition the present work has grown to 25. Bibliographers are keen to assert the rarity of the work, though that is not entirely borne out by the market. That said, of this 1780 edition, there are just 9 examples in institutional collections per OCLC. What distinguishes the present volume is the rich set of annotations by an early owner: John Tremells, an American sailor active in the 1790's and 1800's, who received and doubtless used the volume while at sea. The ownership inscription may indicate that it was given to Tremells by Captain Caleb Hathaway, master of the brig Nancy in 1795. By 1798 Tremells was commanding the schooner Swift as a merchantman in the "Quasi-War" between the U.S. and France, principally over Caribbean maritime rights, which was a turning-point in the buildup of the U.S. Navy. Indeed, it seems that Hathaway -- and perhaps Tremells as well -- was in Philadelphia; several of their circle corresponded with Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. 6 vols, folio, comprising sixteen collections of trios (in total 96 works) and thirteen collections of quartets (78 works), bound in parts; manuscript Index to the Primo parts within a large stippled engraved border signed 'Mango sculp' and with the note at the foot 'These Books made up at William Napiers Music Shop Corner of Lancaster Court, Strand'; a few scattered spots and stains, withal in very good condition, bound in worn but original half calf and marbled boards, red morocco labels to covers, spines very dry, chipped and splitting.An impressive collection of string trios and quartets, including compositions by Giordani, Boccherini, J.C.Bach, Abel, and the virtuoso Maddalena Sirmen, as well as the first publication in England of any work by Haydn (the quartets Op.1 and 2). The volumes were bound and indexed for retail by the Scottish violinist and music publisher William Napier (c.17401812), who in 1772 opened a music shop in London at the 'corner of Lancaster Court, Strand'. To his own editions of 177275 of works by contemporaries active in London like Pierre Vachon (17381803), William Cramer (17461799), Frederic Schumann (fl.176080, best known as a performer on the musical glasses), and Tommaso Giordani (17301806), Napier has added a fine selection of publications published in recent years in London by Peter Welcker and Robert Bremner, including trios by Stefano Galeotti (17231790), Jacob Herschel (17341792, the elder brother of the astronomer and composer William Herschel), Carl Friedrich Abel (17231787), Antonín Kammel (17301784), and Luigi Boccherini (17431805); and quartets by Abel, Kammel, Johann Christian Bach (17351832), and Josef Haydn unauthorized printings of his earliest quartets (as well as two spurious attributions). Bremner's printings of Opp.1 and 2 were preceded only by editions printed in Amsterdam, and were the first works by Haydn to appear in print in the British Isles his reputation grew steadily from that point until his arrival in London in 1791. Also included is the Paris-printed first edition of six quartets by Maddalena Sirmen (née Lombardini, 17451818); unusually for the age she was not from a family of musicians, but studied under Tartini, and was evidently highly esteemed as a violinist. She was 'one of the first women who composed music for string quartet' (her husband's name also appears on the title-page) and 'oversaw the publication of her own works', (E.Wiesbauer, Introduction to Lombardini Sirmen's Six string quartets). She performed in London in 1771 (as a violinist) and 1772 (as a singer), and Napier was to publish a reprint of the current quartets as well as several other works by her.
