B. Woulfe's Company, presenting the famous historical play by Max Goldberg, (John F. Preston.) He refers to Mabelle F. Barlow, Lady Astor and his own play 'Divorce or Dishonour'. As a boy he was greatly impressed by Loraine's performance, and it 'started my interest in Coventry. As President of The Animal Service Association, I am still very attached to white horses. [.] Edith had a tragic finish on Armistice Night, 1918, falling from a London balcony.' Badge: Circular and 2cm in diameter. Printed in brown on cream. BOWMAN'. Bowman also produced a series of fake postage stamps, with him made up to look like the monarch. For more on Bowman see A. W. B. Simpson's 'In the Highest Degree Odious' (1994). Bowman received his 'knighthood' from Count Potocki de Montalk in March 1943, and was deprived of it the following year for alleged lèse majesté and breach of his oath of fealty. As the present letter indicates, this did not prevent him from continuing to use his 'title'.

Addressed to 'Mr. Moon' on verso of second leaf of bifoliate, which has a hole from the breaking of a wafer which still adheres. Reads 'I've taken the liberty of leaving for your inspection a few specimens of my stile of engraving - your brother Mr. Moon in Threadneedle St [Francis Graham Moon, , later Lord Mayor of London?] was so kind as to say he would recommend me to call as you were bringing out several works - I flatter myself so far as to say - my specimens have given such satisfaction - as to furnish me with several subjects for very superior work, - - if you were to favour me with a subject for either of yours - you may depend on my giving both you and the Artist satisfaction - I shall be passing your residence in a day or so and will take the liberty of calling.' Signed 'W. Chevalier'. If, as seems probable, the recipient is the printseller Sir Francis Graham Moon (1796-1871, later Lord Mayor of London), then of the firm of Moon, Boys & Graves of Pall Mall, the letter is a significant one, marking the beginning of an important association between the two.

Fortunately I was able to get a final revise, and I [?] all your valuable suggestions - For 'absurd statements' I give 'unproved statements'[;] for 'untrue' I give 'unfair'; and for 'lamentable rant' I give 'evident rant'. I also give 'brief note' for 'stupid note'. These four corrections will, I think, render the matter quite as effective and not so offensive." He would like a copy of No.2 'as soon as ready', asking if Arkwright had a copy of his "History of Irish Music" [1905]. If not, he'll give him one.
