Emma Willard collaborated with Woodbridge on this method and text. The method: "It is by comparing facts of the same kind, by arranging them in classes and reducing them to general principles, that so much simplicity and beauty have been given to modern works of science." - Preface to the Third Edition. Extensively illustrated with wood engravings, including an elephant chasing a hunter, who has climbed up a palm tree, which the elephant is trying to pull out of the ground. Woodbridge includes some feisty observations, such as, "There are probably 100,000 Indians in the United States, and 300,000 in their territories.
