In den WarenkorbZustand: Very good+. Bill Levy, Germaine Greer, Jim Haynes and Heathcote Williams, SUCK: The First European Sexpaper no.s 1-8, Joy, London, 1969-1974. This is a complete set of Suck, which ran for a total of eight issues. Condition: All issues folded, some wear to spine on first 3 issues and some chipping to edges of issue 1. Neat ownership signature at top of issue 4, alongside staples with some minor bleed. Issues 1-3 very good. Issues 4 onwards very good +.In 1969, Bill Levy (then chief editor of IT in London), Jim Haynes (founder of the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh and the Arts Lab in London), Heathcote Williams (playwright), Germaine Greer (feminist writer) together with Willem de Ridder (who ran the Fluxus bookshop in Amsterdam) and Susan Janssen (filmmaker) decided to make a new revolutionary sex publication. From 1969 to 1974, the editorial group moved between the US and Europe, living together for short, intense periods. Germaine Greer has spoken of Suck as an antidote to the exploitative pornography of magazines like Screw and Hustler.Suck is among the most important underground newspapers of the late 1960s and early 1970s, as an intersection between the sexual revolution and hippie subculture. Devoted to liberated eroticism, radical feminism, alternative visual culture and literary ambition, it has been celebrated in recent years by personalities such as Chris Kraus. Suck features comic and graphic art and photography, with many issues including centrefold posters. Topics addressed by Suck range from those considered tame by today's standards to those still considered taboo. The first issue of Suck caused a sensation, especially in England where Special Branch police closed down the PO Box address and raided the Arts Lab on Drury Lane. The Suck team rescued approximately 9,000 copies from the Dutch printer (Augustin & Schoonman in Zwanenburg) just before Scotland Yard arrived. While Scotland Yard were distracted by tea and cake at Willem de Ridder's studio, Bill Levy arranged for 1,000 copies to be smuggled to London. A further 1,000 or so copies were confiscated at the Danish-German border the following month, when de Ridder and Levy drove back from the first Copenhagen Sex Fair, most of which were later collected in Germany by the distributor Bill Daley.
