Zustand: Good. - Octavo, three quarter tan calf & marbled boards with gilt-lettered leather labels between raised bands & decorations in gilt on the spines. The top edges are gilt & the endpapers are marbled. The bindings are lightly rubbed with some darkening to the leather at the extremities. Some kind of veneer has been applied to the spines & there are pieces out of the leather & out of the labels, affecting the titling. The front cover of Vol. 1 is detached. xxxviii & 434 pages; [iv] & 398 pages; xii & 399 pages; viii & 469 pages; with a 16-page publisher's catalog in each volume. Illustrated with 45 engraved plates, including a portrait frontispiece in each volume & a folding genealogical table. There is an owner's bookplate displaying a coat of arms on each front pastedown with a later owner's ink address stamp & printed address label on the preliminary blanks of each volume. The front edges of a few pages in Vol. 2 are darkened. Good. A title in Bohn's Historical Library.

Later printing of the second edition, originally published in 1819. Published from the original manuscripts in one volume. The memoirs of John Evelyn, an English writer, landowner, gardener, courtier and minor government official, who is now best known as a diarist. He was a founding Fellow of the Royal Society. Comprising his diaries from the year 1641 to 1706, along with a selection of his familiar letters, this work provides commentary on the execution of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell's rise and eventual death, the last Great Plague of London, and the Great Fire of London in 1666. Edited by William Bray, an English antiquary, best known as co-author of a county history of Surrey. Bound in half straight grained morocco with marbled boards. Externally, sound with rubbing to the extremities resulting in minor loss. The odd small mark to the boards with light fading to the spine. Front hinge just starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd small spot. Light spotting to the first and last few pages. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Good. book.

Hinges firm, marbled closed page edges and end papers. A heraldic book plate inside the front of each volume, also a very small ink contemporaneous inscription to the free end paper of each. Pages smooth, clean, no spotting or foxing, an extremely well preserved set. May incur additional postage charges overseas.

The boards are shelf rubbed and edge worn, but remain strong and sturdy. Internally, there is tanning and foxing throughout, but there are no other markings or inscriptions, and the pages are neat, legible and complete with all plates as called for.
