Some kind of veneer has been applied to the spines & there are pieces out of the leather & out of the labels, affecting the titling. The front cover of Vol. 1 is detached. xxxviii & 434 pages; [iv] & 398 pages; xii & 399 pages; viii & 469 pages; with a 16-page publisher's catalog in each volume. Illustrated with 45 engraved plates, including a portrait frontispiece in each volume & a folding genealogical table. The memoirs of John Evelyn, an English writer, landowner, gardener, courtier and minor government official, who is now best known as a diarist. He was a founding Fellow of the Royal Society. Comprising his diaries from the year 1641 to 1706, along with a selection of his familiar letters, this work provides commentary on the execution of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell's rise and eventual death, the last Great Plague of London, and the Great Fire of London in 1666. Edited by William Bray, an English antiquary, best known as co-author of a county history of Surrey. Bound in half straight grained morocco with marbled boards. Externally, sound with rubbing to the extremities resulting in minor loss. The odd small mark to the boards with light fading to the spine. Front hinge just starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd small spot. Light spotting to the first and last few pages. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Good. book.
