In den Warenkorb12mo bifolium. Ellenborough's letter (15 lines of text) occupies the first leaf; with the pencil draft of Gough's reply (also 15 lines), with additions and deletions, on the recto of the second leaf. Very good, with traces of grey paper mount adhering in a thin strip to the reverse of the second leaf. Ellenborough will 'afford' Nichols 'every facility for the making of tracings from the Tiles at Southam'. If Nichols will let him know when he is coming he will 'make it a point to be here'. Suggests that Nichols might come 'after Church, about 2 o'clock, on Sunday next'. In reply Nichols says he will do himself 'the honour of calling at the hour you name'. Asks Ellenborough to 'give directions to drain & dry' the tiles, as they 'have probably become very wet during the last two days', and makes another request relating to them.

In den Warenkorb1p., 4to. In good condition, on aged paper, with thin trace of glue from mount on blank reverse, and minor chipping beneath flourish of Griffiths's signature. Addressing his letter to 'Dear Sir!', Griffiths suggests that if his correspondent is 'in want of any assistance' in carrying on his 'very extensive literary concerns, the Bearer can be well recommended. - He has had a liberal education, possesses a good taste, & may be useful to you in revising, correcting, translating, &c. &c.' The 'young Gentleman' to whom Griffiths refers is, he states, 'Grandson to the Celebrated Dr. Doddridge', and he and the recipient of the letter may be 'useful to each other', if the latter has 'occasion for such an Assistant'. Doddridge's grandson would appear to be John Doddridge Humphreys (b.1760) of Tewkesbury, whose son of the same name edited Doddridge's works. Docketed in a contemporary hand at the head of the page 'Griffiths R'. The engraving of 'Ralph Griffiths, LLD' by '[William] Ridley sc' (taken from the European Magazine, 1803) is 9.5 x 13 cm, laid down on a paper mount. It is in fair condition, on lightly aged paper. The Griffiths papers are in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.

Autograph note signed, 2pp., 8vo, trimmed without loss of text, to T.C. Croker, folklorist and antiquary, at the Admiralty, 15 April (no year). He has received "the Vols of Hogarth" safely, and asks to borrow "the Volume of W. Jesse's, published about a year ago" [possibly "Notes on Russia, Circassia and Crimea, 1839-40 - London Catalogue] which Croker had reviewed for the "Gentleman's Magazine".

In den Warenkorb2pp., 12mo. Bifolium on grey paper. Aged and worn. Addressed on reverse of second leaf by Black, with his initials, to 'J B Nichols, esq | 25 Park Street.' An interesting glimpse of the editorial workings of the Gentleman's Magazine and Georgian periodical publication in general. Black complains that he has been 'waiting some days for the concluding sheet (as I suppose) of that part of which contains the Ferrar, - the end of the quarto MS. copy'. He asks Nichols to 'send it quickly, because I wish to ascertain how the end of the work may be best made up, not being satisfied with Sir Richard's papers which you kindly put into my hands. I wish to send them to him with my remarks, and a proof of the last sheet of my papers when it is ready'. In a postscript he asks for 'A proof of my Grimaldi paper'.

In den Warenkorb3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He begins: 'You would see that we found room for an extract from the Camden Society report in last week's Chronicle'. He asks Nichol to 'find space for the enclosed letter in the Gentleman's Magazine'. He is 'acquainted with the pedigree in question', but does not think that 'Sir Bernard Burke's statements are in all cases to bee relied upon'. The letter continues: 'I do not know whether you are in Mr Potter's secrets. His first volume, so long looked for, seems no nearer publication now than it was when first announced.' Thompson has 'received applications to undertake the republication' of Nichols's 'grandfather's work' [John Nichols (1745-1826)], but has 'several times declined to do so'. He concludes: 'It would be well if Mr Potter brought out a volume or part, if he wishes to retain the good wishes of his subscribers'.

In den Warenkorb12mo, 3 pp. Very good. Nichols regrets not seeing the recipient 'again before I left the Institution on Tuesday, to thank you for your kind attention' [Upcott was sub-librarian at the London Institution]. He is sending him a proof (presumably of an article in the Gentleman's Magazine), 'that you may see what I have said about your Album, and also what about modern collectors, and make any emendation you think fit in either place'. Discussion of 'the earliest Album in the Museum', about the date of which the recipient has been misled by a misprint. 'Your oldest I supposed to be the large quarto one, with the date 1591 on the binding: but I find Mr Smith [John Thomas Smith (1766-1833), Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum] made this memorandum | 1565 to 1590 | William | John Pfeiffer. | Have you then an older one?' If not suggests that the album 'might be new bound in 1591'. Two-line note on third page asking for the proof to be returned 'soon by 2dy. post.'.

In good condition, on aged paper. The rear of the envelope carries a good impression of a red wax seal, and the letter begins: 'My dear Sir, I had written this letter having obtained my object through my friend the York Herald and I still send it on account of the Seal which was the counter seal of Richd Neville Earl of Warwick killed at the battle of Barnet'. Invites him to 'form the trio' if his 'old friend Mr John Gough Nichols' has 'before the summer is gone [.] a day with me at Cobham.' States that he 'obtained the Warwick Seal while rummaging among the archives at St Marys Hall Coventry'.

On aged paper, with remains of grey paper mount adhering to the reverse, and short closed tears to top and bottom right-hand corners, the latter through the signature. Nichols writes that he 'forgot the Principal Thing' he meant to say on putting 'the hasty Letter [.] in Mr Parcel', which is to thank him 'for the Offer of Mr Carte's Letters'. He will 'certainly make an opportunity of introducing from them any Extracts' that his recipient will 'point out', or, if he will lend him the volume, it will be 'carefully returned'. The number of pages the extracts may take up, 'more or less, is of no Consquence'. He ends by asking him to 'Pardon this Postscript to my former Letter'.

He has written 'Hugh Henry', 'which must be reversed to Henry Hugh'. He proceeds to give a transcription of how 'the paragraph will run': 'The Baronetcy devolves on his eldest Half-Brother Henry Hugh Hoare Esqr. the head of the eminent banking house in Fleet St. and the whole of the landed as well as personal property is strictly entailed on the Mae Descendants of the Family'. The text featured as a correction in the 'Minor Correspondence' section of the Gentleman's Magazine, October 1838.

Nichols' hand. Wakeling, perhaps a funeral director as well as an upholsterer (although Wakelings appear in the British Book Trades Index) , formally informs Nichols that "a funeral Carriage will be provided for his conveyance". The notes in Nichols' hand (verso or address side of note just described) contain a discussion of Jacob Bryant's "A Vindication of the Apamean Medal and of the inscription . . ." (1775), perhaps preparatory to an article. Image on request.

In den WarenkorbLetter: 2pp., 4to. 28 lines of text. List: 1p., on a 12mo strip. Both letter and list in very good condition, neatly placed in windowpane mounts on the two leaves of a bifolium. Salt is 'just finishing the List of Manuscript Erdeswick's' and will bring it to Nichols when he returns to London. He wonders whether Nichols has 'nearly come to the end of the Book in your reprint? I do not think you will make your first sheet answer satisfactorily - without printing the whole or part of it over again - but of course you will be the best judge of that'. He makes a couple of comments on it, before stating that he is enclosing 'a List of 12 of John Buckler's engravings which I am in want of to complete a Set of his works, which he has very liberally supplied me with. [.] The usual Printshops have been ransacked without success.' He asks if Nichols has any 'contained in the within List that you could spare - I have been told you bought a Volume of Buckler's works some time since'. He ends by wishing Nichols's son 'late' congratulations on his marriage. The enclosure lists the twelve engravings according to county.
