Reads: 'Dr. Coote presents his Compliments to Mr. Cadell, & offers many Apologies for having solong [sic] kept back, from Inattention and Negligence, the Books which Mr. C. furnished for the Supplement to Mosheim. - January 23, 1814.' From the Cadell and Davies papers, the two books referred to having been published by the firm for Campbell: 'A reply to the strictures of the Edinburgh Review, on the foreign policy of Marquis Wellesley's administration in India' (1807) and 'A letter addressed to a member of the present Parliament on the "Articles of Charge" against Marquis Wellesley' (1808). …

The subject of this letter is Huntingford's 'Pindari Carmina', 'excudit R. Watts sumptibus T. Cadell et W. Davies', published in London in 1814. Watts had been made Printer to the University of Cambridge in 1802, resigning in 1809 because, as Stokes notes in his 'Cambridge Stationers, Printers, Bookbiinders, &c' (1919), 'the Press did not prosper under his rule, although, when he left Cambridge, he did good work as a printer of Oriental volumes'. Between around 1812 and 1815 he was working in Broxbourne. In 1816 he moved to London, where he established the Oriental Type-Foundry, Temple Bar. 2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Huntingford begins by reporting that he 'received the clean sheets' that morning, and by apologising for sending an overweight frank. He continues: 'As this is almost the last time I shall have occasion to write to you, I take the present opportunity to thank you for the ready attention you have paid to my directions in the course of the Work, and to congratulate you on the credit that work will do to the Broxbourne Press, from the beauty of the Types & Paper, and, generally speaking from the great correctness with which it is executed.' In a long postscript he states that he will soon send what 'remains of the Work': 'the Dissertation, the additional Notes from Benedict, & the list of Errata [] The remaining clean sheets can be sent in franks.' The postscript concludes: 'The sooner the Work is done, the better; as I believe the school at Winchester is waiting for it. Although clearly a member of the firm, the identity of the writer is unclear, the descriptions of Cadell & Davies material at the Huntingdon and Yale not yielding any information. See Image.…

Trollope's letter: 3pp., 12mo. 48 lines. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged paper. Addressed, with postmarks, on reverse of second leaf, to 'Messrs. Cadell & Co. | Booksellers | Strand.' Trollope begins by announcing that he has 'a work nearly ready for the Press, wh. may probably be worth your attention [.] It is designed as companion to Mr Horne's work on the Scriptures, of wh. as you are the publishers, you may perhaps have no objection to engage in another, wh. is designed to comprise whatever is not supplied in that work for the use of the Theological Student, so that the two together will contain all that is necessary to be known by a Candidate for Holy Orders.' He proceeds with his description, before stating that it is his 'wish to dispose of the Copy-right, reserving of course a consideration in regard to any future Edition'. A note from the publishers at the foot of the page reads: 'NB: Conferred Septr 20 with Mr T respecting'. Above this, in pencil in another hand: 'Blomfield's [sic] Recensio Synoptica 8V.' Accompanying the letter is the statement of account, 2pp., 12mo. In fair condition, on aged paper with chipping and a few closed tears. The first page is headed 'No. 1500 | Trollope's Analecta Theologica Vol 1.' Dated 28 December 1829, it gives the itemised costs of printing, paper, interest, '11 Copies to Stationers Hall', and advertisements, totalling £468 15s 0d. The second page is headed '1835 Augt. | Volume 2 - No. 1500', with a similar breakdown giving £543 15s 0d. At the foot of both pages are figures for 'C. H. S.' in 'bds [boards]', totalling £712 for volume 1 and £843 15s 0d for volume 2.…

Eliza Urquhart begins her letter: 'Gentlemen, | Mr Urquhart has desired me to acquaint you that he thinks it would be adviseable immediately to see Mr Spotswood [i.e. Spottiswoode, then an employee of the book's printer Andrew Strahan] on the subject of accelerating the printing of his work, as from the present tardiness with which the proofs are sent, he thinks the Season will inevitably be lost'. Her husband has, she continues, 'so often urged this point, when he returns the proofs, that he cannot with any propriety say more on the subject.' Davies 'may probably think it right, to suggest the necessity of greater expedition'. She ends by explaining that 'Mr Urquhart would have written but has noly lately been declared out of danger from a long & desperate fever'. At the head of the letter is a note, presumbaly by Davies, dated 7 May 1803, and reading: '2D will be sent by this day's Post and will be the fifth sheet sent this week. - There are between seven and eight sheets yet to send of which one will be sent every day.'.…

An interesting document, providing an insight into the world of Georgian publishing. Without preamble or salutation, reads: 'This work, in point of style, composition, & sentiment everything, in short, in which the writer's merit is concerned, is much below mediocrity. But whether its subject, & the side it takes in party, might not at the present moment gain it some public favour, is what I cannot answer. The author certainly conceives it to be a happy stroke at the times; & he has done all in his power by a full portion of political bigotry to make it suit its purpose. From the slight examination I have given it, it appears to contain nothing new in a historical view. | J. A.' From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'. …

Adolphus's letter, addressed to 'T. Cadell Esqr.', is 1p, 12mo, and on the recto of the first leaf of a bifolium. A nice artefact of publishing in Georgian London. The reference in the letter to Cadell's 'proposal' concerns his firm's terms for publishing a three-volume continuation of Adolphus's 'History of England from the Accession of George III to the Conclusion of Peace in 1783' (1802). Cadell's memorandum setting out his proposal fills the whole of the reverse of the first leaf, with one line extending to the recto of the second. The reverse of second leaf is laid down on part of leaf from album. In fair condition, on aged paper, with slight staining to second leaf from glue from mount. Folded twice. Adolphus, who from Cadell's memorandum opened negotiations for the work in a letter of 9 May, writes: 'I am sorry we parted so suddenly today. I should like to hear, at least, what you wished to propose. If you please, I will call on you some morning in my way from Westminster; or, if you are passing this way between 4 & 5 oClock, I shall be glad to see you.' Cadell's memorandum fills the whole of the reverse, beginning: 'N B: Called June 10 - and proposed as follows for the Copyright of each Volume.' He gives details of proposed payments for each of the three volumes, amounting to £500, 'to be paid 12 Mos. after publication'. After a reference to 'Copies to be presented to Mr A', Cadell continues: 'Could not ascertain at what time the first Portion (ending with the Peace of Amiens) would be sufficiently prepared for the Printing to begin.' Beneath this Cadell notes that the negotiations were not successful: 'N B: This proposal was not acceded to, and all further conference upon the subject ceased'. Between 1840 and his death in 1845 Adolphus published seven of the eight volumes of a new edition of his history, with the title amended to state that it spanned the period 'from the Accession to the Decease of King George the Third'.…
