We have seen the 1843 edition called the second edition, thus we are calling this a first edition--although we have also seen a copy possibly dated "1840". This copyhas a total of sixty-five illustrations; 36 full-page steel engravings of great racehorses, 10 full-page plates of prominent racing ghentlemen, and 19 textual wood-cuts. Cololated complete. Some plates are foxed at margins, never heavy. Several tissue-guards remain. Covers are worn at edges and faded. BUT it is rare indeed to find this volume in its original binding, most having been rebound. 271pp. + 8 pages of adverts. Wildrake was the pseudonym for George Tattersall (1817-1849) of the famous London racing family. He was a sporting artist and architect. Size: Large Octavo.

Robert Smith Surtees was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer best known for his contributions to the first English sporting periodical to devote itself to every type of sport, 'The Sporting Magazine'. Surtees launched his own sporting magazine entitled the 'New Sporting Magazine' in 1831, contributing the comic papers which appeared as 'Jorrocks' Jaunts and Jollities' in 1838. Jorrocks, the eponymous, vulgar and artful sporting cockney grocer was a great success with the public and is often considered as one of the great comic characters of English Literature, Surtees produced several works in the same vein as his 'Jorrocks novels', including this text, 'Hillingdon Hall'. This work is a fine example of Victorian upper-class humour. Collated, complete with twelve coloured plates by Wildrake, Heath and Jellicoe. In cloth binding with gilt detailing. An early edition, with this work first appearing in 1844. Written by George Tattersall under the pseudonym "Wildrake". Tattersall was an English sporting artist and architect, whose family ran the Tattersall horse market. He published a number of works on English horse racing, in a variety of edition, notably an expanded version of this 'Pictorial Gallery', published in 1850. This particular edition contains a gallery and information surrounding English race horses, with portraits of all the winning horses of the Derby, Oaks and St. Leger stakes from the previous thirteen years. Also including a history of the principal operations of the turf, with sketches of some of its most distinguished members. Very scarce in this early edition. Illustrated with seventy-four engravings, after paintings by Cooper, Herring, Hancock and others, including an extra, illustrated title page. Lacking plate of Miss Letty to page 172. He was known for his sporting illustrations (though this book includes illustrations by multiple artists, in addition to Tattersall's scenes) and as a sporting architect.
