In den WarenkorbOriginal Brown Ribbed Cloth. Zustand: General Cover Wear. No Jacket. First Edition. Rebacked with original spine laid-down. New endpapers. Gilt winner's cup on front cover remains bright. Elaborately-engraved title-page is browned and heavily foxed. Date on spine is "1841", with no date on title-page. We have seen the 1843 edition called the second edition, thus we are calling this a first edition--although we have also seen a copy possibly dated "1840". This copyhas a total of sixty-five illustrations; 36 full-page steel engravings of great racehorses, 10 full-page plates of prominent racing ghentlemen, and 19 textual wood-cuts. Cololated complete. Some plates are foxed at margins, never heavy. Several tissue-guards remain. Covers are worn at edges and faded. BUT it is rare indeed to find this volume in its original binding, most having been rebound. 271pp. + 8 pages of adverts. Wildrake was the pseudonym for George Tattersall (1817-1849) of the famous London racing family. He was a sporting artist and architect. Size: Large Octavo.…

In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Good. An early edition of George Tattersall's highly illustrated work on English race horses, including portraits of the winning horses of recent years at the Derby, Oaks and St Leger races. An early edition, with this work first appearing in 1844. Written by George Tattersall under the pseudonym "Wildrake". Tattersall was an English sporting artist and architect, whose family ran the Tattersall horse market. He published a number of works on English horse racing, in a variety of edition, notably an expanded version of this 'Pictorial Gallery', published in 1850. This particular edition contains a gallery and information surrounding English race horses, with portraits of all the winning horses of the Derby, Oaks and St. Leger stakes from the previous thirteen years. Also including a history of the principal operations of the turf, with sketches of some of its most distinguished members. Very scarce in this early edition. Illustrated with seventy-four engravings, after paintings by Cooper, Herring, Hancock and others, including an extra, illustrated title page. Lacking plate of Miss Letty to page 172. Plates to page 33, 71 and 208 are bound in a different location to that stated on the list of illustrations page.Bound in half morocco with cloth boards. Renewed endpapers and blanks. With a newspaper clipping entitled 'Former Winners of the Derby' from 1780-1871 tipped-in to front blank. Bound in half morocco with cloth boards. Hinges are strained, more so to the rear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with scattered spotting in places, heavier to the plates and to the illustrated title page and frontispiece. Article tipped-in to front blank. Illustrated title page and frontispiece loosening, and may detach with further handling. Good. Various (illustrator). book.…
